Chapter 480: Encountering a Shakedown Scam

The Sugar Orange Donation Campaign was quite a spectacle organized by Xinxu Town.

They picked a huge quantity of sugar oranges that very day, filling five trucks and clearing out almost all the sugar oranges grown by Su He and her family.

A small patch was left untouched, as the cadres said it should be reserved for the Fu family to eat themselves.

The Xinxu Town mayor called Fu Tinghua at his workplace, and Fu Tinghua answered the call.

The mayor expressed his hope that Fu Tinghua and his wife could attend the donation event scheduled for the next day in Xinxu Town.

"Reporters are going? Your new town mayor is pretty sharp, isn’t he?" Su He said with a smile.

"Yes, indeed. He’s sharp and savvy. He probably won’t stay in Xinxu Town for long," Fu Tinghua agreed with Su He’s assessment.

"Alright, I’ll drive there myself tomorrow morning," Su He replied happily.

Just then, Aunt Lan happened to walk into the common area and overheard their conversation. She quickly chimed in, "Let me go with you."

Su He and Fu Tinghua exchanged a glance before Su He tried to talk her out of it by saying, "Mom, the car ride is quite long."

"It’s fine. I—I just don’t feel comfortable with you going alone," Aunt Lan said somewhat awkwardly.

She always worried about Su He driving such a long distance by herself, concerned for her safety.

"Alright then, you can come with me," Su He replied with a smile.

"Okay, great!" Thrilled that her daughter-in-law agreed, Aunt Lan beamed.

She was gradually becoming part of the family and always looking for ways to contribute.

Life here was truly much happier than it had been in the Gu household.

At the very least, here she felt free.

"Mom, are you going back to the village again tomorrow?"

As Su He was getting her things together, Niu Niu sat on the bed watching her and couldn’t help but ask.

"Yes, but this time Mom is going on business, not to visit Grandpa and Grandma for fun," Su He explained to her daughter with a smile.

"Mom, can’t I go with you?" Niu Niu was reluctant to let Su He go. It seemed she had never been apart from her mother for more than a day.

"Mom will leave tomorrow morning and be back in the afternoon," Su He said, moved by how clingy she was. She walked over and ruffled Niu Niu’s hair.

"Okay, then be careful driving, Mom."

"Alright, sweetie."

After Su He got her things together, she went downstairs to take a shower.

She had to turn in early tonight because she wouldn’t be able to sleep in tomorrow.

Su Shiming and Wen Qing were still awake, as the couple was worried about Su He driving back to Xinxu Town alone.

"Su He, how about I go with you tomorrow?" Su Shiming asked.

Hearing this, Su He felt both amused and exasperated, not understanding why everyone in the family was so worried about her going back to the village alone.

"Oh, sweetie, just let your dad go with you. Mom’s worried too," Wen Qing chimed in quickly.

"That’s right. Mom’ll be home, so no need to worry about Zai Zai and Niu Niu. And with Yan Ju at the shop, you don’t have to worry about it either," Su Shiming added.

"Alright, Dad, you can come with me then."

After saying this, Su He headed to shower and turned in early that night.

The next day, on the way to Xinxu Town, Su He was driving in the driver’s seat, with Aunt Lan in the passenger seat and Su Shiming sitting in the back.

He had the back seat all to himself and could even stretch out and nap for a while.

But it was too cold, so he couldn’t really fall asleep.

Halfway through the journey, near a place called Dongpo Village, someone suddenly dashed onto the road. Su He had to slam on the brakes.

"Fucking bitch, get out of the car, get out!" The men outside, seeing that the driver was a woman—and a beautiful one at that—immediately leered, filled with lustful thoughts.

"The woman inside is so pretty."

"Yeah, the one driving is gorgeous, the other one's kinda old but still not bad."

The men spoke very quietly, and from Aunt Lan's perspective, she only saw three men chattering without hearing what they were saying.
