The next day, Ms. Zhou showed up at Su He’s place bright and early.
It was clear she hadn’t slept well at all—you couldn’t miss those dark circles under her eyes.
The moment she saw Su He, her face brightened instantly.
Before Ms. Zhou got a word out, Su He shared the good news with her.
“They said yes—meeting this Saturday. I don’t know if Zhou Liqun is free,” Su He said with a smile.
They actually agreed? Ms. Zhou was grinning from ear to ear.
“Yes, yes, of course he’s free! He’d better be!”
Ms. Zhou barely exchanged a few more words with Su He before leaving.
She had to deliver this good news to her youngest son right away—no time to waste on something this big.
Watching Ms. Zhou rush in and out so quickly, Su He couldn’t help but chuckle.
Moms really go all out for their kids’ futures.
She thought to herself that if Zai Zai and Niu Niu didn’t want to get married in the future, fine by her—no nagging from her.
For now, she’d just work hard, rake in as much cash as possible, and stash it away for the kids.
Even if they chose not to marry or have kids, she’d make sure they’d live comfortably.
After lunch, Su He left Zai Zai, Niu Niu, and Ji Liangchuan to play at home while she went to the shop to take over for Su Shiming so he could come back for a meal and a nap.
If the kids were itching to go out, they could just ask her mother, Wen Qing, to take them.
Not long after switching shifts with Su Shiming, someone unexpected walked in.
“Sister Su.” Xia Miao beamed at Su He from the counter, greeting her.
At this hour, most working people were on their lunch break, so the shop was pretty dead.
“Xia Miao, you—” Su He glanced behind Xia Miao and asked, “Did you come alone?”
“Yeah.” Her smile faltered as she nodded, then she added, “Sister Su, can I talk to you?”
“Of course. I’m not busy right now.” Su He stepped out from behind the counter and sat with Xia Miao on the chairs by the entrance.
“What would you like to drink? I’ll get it for you,” Su He asked casually.
“Just a bottle of water is fine. I have money.” Xia Miao reached into her bag to pull out some cash.
“Hey, since when are we so formal?” Su He quickly stopped her.
“Alright, I’ll take you up on it. Next time, I’ll treat you to that new restaurant on Zhongshan Street,” Xia Miao laughed and pulled her hand back, saying to Su He.
“Deal! You’re on!” Su He agreed.
Xia Miao lowered her head. The last time they met, she had been such a bright, cheerful girl—now, she looked like she was carrying the world on her shoulders.
“What’s going on?” Su He asked.
Xia Miao raised her head, mustered her courage, and said, "Su-jie, can you teach me how to go after a guy? I—I really like Xia Chengan."
Hearing her words, Su He was so shocked that her jaw dropped.
She’d assumed Xia Miao had come to talk about how she couldn’t forget Xia Chengan or how she should stop liking him.
But she never thought Xia Miao would have the guts to directly ask her to teach her how to chase a guy.
Su He looked at Xia Miao with a frown, then said, "If he really doesn’t like you back, is it worth it for you to put yourself out there? I’m afraid you’ll get hurt."
Although Dr. Fu had mentioned that Xia Chengan probably had feelings for Xia Miao too, Su He wasn’t buying it.
In Su He’s eyes, Xia Chengan’s looking out for Xia Miao seemed more like that of an older brother toward a younger sister, not a man toward a woman.
She didn’t want Xia Miao to get hurt, nor did she want to see her run herself ragged chasing after Xia Chengan.
"I’m not afraid of getting hurt, really, Su-jie. In this crush, getting hurt is the least of my worries."
"You don’t get what Xia Chengan means to me."
"My father and Uncle Xia—Xia Chengan’s dad—were close war buddies."
"After my father sacrificed himself, Uncle Xia brought me into the Xia household."
"Afraid that I’d be ostracized by the Xia relatives, Uncle Xia even changed my surname and told everyone I was his kid. Aunt Xia, heartbroken that I’d lost my parents so young and had no family, doted on me like crazy."
"Over time, I carved out a place for myself in the Xia family."
"But you can’t even imagine the life I lived right after my parents died."
"My grandparents were gone too, and my maternal grandparents couldn’t take care of me, so I was sent to live with my uncle in the countryside."
"But the only reason my uncle and aunt took me in was to make me work for them—no eats unless I worked my fingers to the bone."
"So during that time, I went hungry every day. The pigs lived better than I did."
"Later, Uncle Xia found me and brought me to the Xia family, saving me from that hell."
"And the first person I met when I arrived at the Xia home was Xia Chengan."
"He was so kind, like a beam of light shining into my world."
"Because he had my back, I was able to integrate into the Xia family and become the cheerful, lively person I am today."
"Honestly, the person I am now is because of him."
"At heart, I’m still that insecure, timid little girl."
After finishing this long speech, Xia Miao seemed drained, her face turning pale.
Su He truly hadn’t expected that this bubbly girl she’d first met had such a past.
In her current state, Xia Miao was deeply dependent on Xia Chengan.
In other words, Xia Miao saw Xia Chengan as her salvation.
What if, in the end, they didn’t end up together—
"Su-jie, I—I’m really not afraid of getting hurt, truly. I just want to try. If he still doesn’t see me that way, at least I won’t have regrets." Xia Miao’s smile was faint and bleak.
"Why—why do you say that about yourself? To be honest, you're really beautiful. From the moment I first saw you, I couldn’t take my eyes off you." Su He wanted to boost Xia Miao's confidence—she was clearly so lovely and wonderful.
"But I'm not good enough for Xia Chengan. If it weren't for Uncle Xia bringing me to the Xia family, I don’t even know which backwater village I’d have been married off to by now." As she said this, a bitter smile tugged at Xia Miao's lips.
She wasn’t wrong. Her uncle and aunt would’ve absolutely sold her off to some lonely bachelor.
When Xia Miao’s father came to take her away, her uncle and aunt even extorted money from him—utterly shameless.
Later, when the couple ran out of money, they even came to the Xia family to make trouble.
But Xia Chengan had them roughed up—just to defend her.
So how could she not like Xia Chengan? This man was just that incredible.
