Chapter 140 The Sensible Fu Family
by 范氏女子Chapter 140: The Sensible Fu Family
When Fu Tinghua and Su He arrived at the Fu family home, they quickly noticed that the atmosphere was far from pleasant.
"Tinghua, Su He, you're here? Come on, sit down and eat first. We can talk while we eat," Fu Dajun greeted them, waving them over.
Su He glanced at the other Fu family members and said, "I’ll take Zai Zai and Niu Niu to sit at another table."
The children usually sat together, but Su He was worried that the two kids might feel shy about serving themselves at the main table.
"Su He, you stay seated. I'll take care of the kids. You’re our family’s big help today," Wu Yanhua stepped in.
"Mom, I can help my sister eat," Zai Zai suddenly said, looking at Su He.
"Wow, look at Zai Zai—so thoughtful!" Wu Yanhua immediately praised him with a smile.
Despite their young age, Su He and her youngest son had truly raised such good kids.
"All right then, you two go sit at the next table," Su He told the children before sitting down beside Fu Tinghua.
"Let's eat first," Fu Dajun said, telling everyone to dig in.
Oddly enough, chicken was a rare treat on the Fu family dinner table tonight.
Fu Yanju stayed quiet the whole time, her eyes clearly red and swollen from recent crying.
"Tinghua, Su He, eat more," Wu Yanhua said, putting some meat into each of their bowls.
Truthfully, one chicken wasn’t enough for so many people, especially since the children’s table also got a plate.
But in those days, getting chicken for dinner was already a rarity.
When everyone was done eating, Fu Dajun broke the silence.
"Yanju must get a divorce.
Afterward, she’ll come back to us.
Tinghua and his family have already moved out. What about the rest of you? Any objections?
If you do, speak now.
We may soon have to deal with Chen Zhijie and that no-good Chen family. I don't want any fighting among ourselves later on."
There was no denying that the Fu brothers had always been united largely because of Fu Dajun’s leadership.
To deal with outside threats, internal harmony must come first—and this was absolutely true.
Su He glanced at the other sisters-in-law and saw uneasy looks on their faces.
It wasn’t surprising. In those times, divorced women were extremely rare.
Once Fu Yanju returned, the Fu family would surely face gossip.
"Dad, I can find some empty land and build a simple house. Just give me a plot so my daughter and I won’t starve," Fu Yanju quickly offered, fearing her sisters-in-law might object.
"Don’t be silly! You’re my own sister. Coming home is only natural. Stay without worry—your brothers will handle everything," Fu Guoqing suddenly declared, making the women quickly hide their reactions.
At that moment, Fu Tinghua suddenly took Su He's hand.
"It’s okay, don’t worry," he whispered softly into her ear.
"If you’re bullied, you *have to* fight back. There’s no reason to take it lying down just because you’re afraid of gossip. Xiaohua, Fangfang."
Fu Dajun suddenly addressed Zhang Xiaohua and He Fangfang.
"Huh?"
"Ah? Dad?"
Both jumped at being singled out.
They hadn’t opposed their father-in-law’s decision, but they still felt that if a woman got divorced, her life would be over. What man would ever want a divorced woman?
Their earlier weird looks were clearly driven by this concern.
Let’s face it—women at the time still had very old-fashioned thinking, especially in rural areas. Most still saw their husbands as the center of their world.
Otherwise, Fu Yanju wouldn’t have been beaten half to death without thinking about leaving. It was only when her life was truly in danger that she had no choice but to leave.
"You two both have daughters. If Da Ya or Ya Ya ran into a situation like this in the future, I hope you’d stand up and demand what’s right for your own girls."
Fu Dajun’s words hit home for the three women present.
Right—what if it were their own daughters?
Just thinking about it made their chests tighten.
It’s easy to brush things off until they happen to *you*.
"I have no objections," Zhang Xiaohua quickly said.
"Me neither," He Fangfang was quick to add, not wanting to be left out.
"Well, I don’t object either," Chen Sufen chimed in. Though she didn’t have a daughter yet, who knew whether she might still have childbearing years ahead? She was young enough to have more children.
"Good. I hope we can all stick together this time," Fu Dajun said, then turned to Fu Tinghua.
"Tinghua, you told us not to pick a fight with the Chen family, and we’ll listen to you.
You’ve always been the smartest and most successful in this family.
This time, with your sister’s situation, I hope you can make them pay." Fu Dajun let out a heavy sigh.
"Don’t worry, Dad," Fu Tinghua replied solemnly, still holding Su He’s hand as he looked his father in the eye.
Only then did Fu Dajun feel reassured.
His youngest son never made a move he wasn’t sure about—he always did what he said he’d do.
After discussing some other family matters, Fu Tinghua headed home with Su He and the kids.
Fu Dajun looked at the two of them holding hands, with two adorable kids trailing behind. The sight of their happy family of four finally eased his furrowed brow.
This was easily the happiest thing happening in their household right now.
His youngest son and daughter-in-law had finally started getting along a little.
"Hey, do you think we should try to help Ting Hua rebuild their house? Their current place is still a mud-brick house."
Wu Yanhua, standing beside her husband, couldn't resist asking.
"Absolutely we'll rebuild it. Haven't you been keeping the money Ting Hua gave us? Once they move to the city, we'll build them a proper brick house."
Seeing that her husband already had plans, Wu Yanhua arched her eyebrows, surprised.
When it came to doting on their youngest son, Fu Dajun still took the prize as most devoted father.
Back then, he had gone around begging and borrowing just to send their youngest son to school in the city.
But now, the family had finally pulled through.
Their youngest son had really made something of himself.
"Yanju said Ting Hua was seriously impressive—he even managed to get her and Su He out of the interrogation room at the town police station," Wu Yanhua couldn't help bragging to her husband.
But Fu Dajun's face clouded over. "Don't bring up such sensitive topics again. With the current crackdown, and the villagers having such big mouths, what if rumors spread and affect Ting Hua's job?"
Scolded by her husband, Wu Yanhua got a little scared.
Though Fu Dajun usually listened to her, once he put on his serious face, it was quite intimidating.
"Okay, okay, I get it! I was just talking to family—it's not like I'd go around telling others.
Do I seem like that kind of person? Besides, I wouldn't go blabbing about our Yanju and Su He being detained in an interrogation room."
