Chapter 258: Made Me Afraid of Marriage
by 范氏女子Chapter 258: Marriage Jitters
"Wow, Su He is amazing. Having someone so capable in our family is a real blessing.
From now on, I’ll listen to everything Su He says.
If I ever dare to act up like last time, just yell at me directly," Zhang Xiaohua couldn’t help but say.
"Why would I scold you? Just remember one thing—whoever puts money in your pocket, you listen to them.
When it comes to business, none of us can compare to Su He, so we should just do what she says.
Whatever she tells us to do, we’ll do it. And from now on, don’t chat behind their backs with the other two sisters-in-law, understand?"
"Oh, I know, I know. What would I even gossip about with them?"
After returning to their rooms, the other two sisters-in-law were also really emotional.
Especially Chen Sufen, who felt the most embarrassed among them.
After all, she always had an angle, constantly thinking about how to benefit her own small family and never let herself get shortchanged.
Who would’ve thought that after meeting someone like Su He, she’d feel her face burn with shame?
Nickel-and-diming everything really isn’t good.
As soon as she returned to her room, Chen Sufen was warned again by her husband, Fu Derong.
"Listen, if you want to keep doing business with Su He in the future, drop the shady tricks. Otherwise, we’re out to avoid you embarrassing yourself in front of Su He."
Normally, Chen Sufen would’ve jumped down Fu Derong’s throat right away.
Given her sharp tongue, she would’ve definitely retorted.
But today, she was surprisingly meek: "Got it. From now on, I’ll listen to Su He and to Mom and Dad. Whatever they arrange, I’ll follow."
The most excited person tonight was undoubtedly Fu Yanju.
She never expected Su He would even give her a cut.
After everyone had gone back to their rooms to rest, Wu Yanhua also went to her daughter’s room—the one Fu Tinghua used to live in—to have a chat with Fu Yanju.
"Has it been great living in the city this whole time?" Wu Yanhua asked Fu Yanju.
"It’s been great, Mom. Su He and Ting Hua have both looked out for me and Wan Er," Fu Yanju quickly replied.
"What about Wan Er? Is she happy?" Wu Yanhua turned to Wan Er with a smile and asked.
"Grandma, I’m very happy staying in the city with Uncle and Auntie."
Chen Waner clearly looked much healthier now.
She used to be thin and sallow, but she’d gained a little weight, and her skin had improved. The kid looked healthier and brighter now.
"Good. Then you stay in the city and put in the work with Su He, understand?"
As she spoke, Wu Yanhua slipped her another two hundred bucks into Fu Yanju’s hand.
"Mom, what’s this for?" Fu Yanju quickly pushed it back.
"Here, take it. Your dad and I always meant for you to have this," Wu Yanhua insisted, stuffing the money directly into Fu Yanju's hand.
Fu Yanju clenched the money tightly, her eyes reddening again.
"Oh, stop crying—what’s there to cry about?" Wu Yanhua scolded, both exasperated and amused.
"Mom, I’ve failed you both. Even though my child is already so big, I’m still making you and Dad worry about me," Fu Yanju sobbed as she spoke.
"Nonsense! We *want* to worry about you! As long as you and Wan Er are doing well, that’s all that matters."
At this point, Wu Yanhua suddenly changed the subject and added, "Yan Ju, listen to me. If the right person comes along, you should give it a thought. What do you think?"
Wu Yanhua was deeply afraid that her daughter might refuse to remarry because of her previous marriage.
But these days, how’s a woman supposed to raise a daughter all on her own?
And with Fu Yanju still having so many years ahead of her, Wu Yanhua didn’t want her daughter to spend the rest of her life alone.
"Not now, Mom. I don’t want to think about this now," Fu Yanju replied, clearly resistant to the topic.
In fact, a few village matchmakers had already dropped hints, wanting to introduce second marriages to Fu Yanju, but Wu Yanhua had said she’d wait until her daughter returned.
Now, seeing her daughter balk, she figured she’d let it go for now and sound out Su He later.
After all, Fu Yanju spent more time in the city now, so Su He might know something?
"Then I’ll head back. You and Wan Er rest well tonight. Tomorrow, don’t go to the fields with your dad and the others. Go help Su He out—see what she could use a hand with. Tomorrow is Zai Zai and Niu Niu’s birthday, and the way she spoils those two, she’s bound to be swamped."
Fu Yanju agreed to all of Wu Yanhua’s instructions one by one.
As long as she didn’t have to go on blind dates or get married, she was fine.
She’d caught the hint right away in Wu Yanhua’s words earlier.
She’d rather raise her daughter alone than settle for just anyone.
Meanwhile, Su He and Fu Tinghua, each with a kid in tow, made their way toward the village outskirts.
"Well? How’d it go?" Fu Tinghua suddenly asked out of the blue.
"How was what?" Su He asked, amused.
Did Dr. Fu expect her to read his mind? What kind of question was that?
"Three thousand yuan, gone just like that. I figured you’d be clutching your pearls over it," Fu Tinghua teased.
"You really underestimate me. Do I *seem* like the type to sweat over pocket change?"
Sure, three thousand yuan wasn’t chump change back then, but teamwork pays off.
She’d be rolling in it soon enough.
"That’s good. You got enough to re-up?" Fu Tinghua asked again.
He didn’t know Su He sourced most of her stock from her space.
So he’d always fretted she might not even have the cash to restock.
Little did he know, Su He still had fifteen grand stashed away.
This is all the money earned from the shop’s sales and durian profits.
"We’ve got enough money, so don’t worry."
Fu Tinghua stayed at the shop to help every day after work and helped tally up the books after closing.
Although he knew the daily revenue of the supermarket, he wasn’t involved in tracking expenses, so he had no idea how much Su He had actually earned.
Not that he planned to ask.
"By the way, did you talk to your friend about the truck?"
They’d just discussed buying the truck themselves, without the Fu family’s financial help, which reminded Su He to ask.
"I did, but he refused to take any more money. He even threatened to cut me off completely if I brought it up again," Fu Tinghua said, exasperated.
