Chapter 136 Going Home
by 范氏女子Chapter 136 Homecoming
A doctor? Some no-name doctor could be friends with someone of that stature? Who you trying to kid?
"Tell the truth!" Director Ma roared at Chen Zhijie.
"I-I'm telling the truth! My wife's younger brother is just a doctor. He works at the city's People's Hospital, and I heard he even got deployed with the military. How did he come back?" Chen Zhijie muttered.
So he's a military doctor? Then it’s normal for him to know some high-ranking officials.
Heh, that settled his nerves—nothing dangerous here.
But just to be safe, Director Ma wasn’t planning to let any of them go.
"You lot, cool your heels in holding for a few days. You'll get out... eventually."
With that, he turned to leave.
That's it?... Just like that?
Chen Zhijie was gobsmacked.
"D-Director Ma, when's that bitch who hit us coming to apologize?"
He and his brothers were still practically drooling over Su He’s pretty face.
"Apologize? Keep dreaming! She acted in self-defense—walked clean, already home free. As for you, sit tight right there!"
Director Ma ignored them after that, walking straight out of the interrogation room. Without a word, the junior officer beside him shut the door behind them.
Left behind were a stunned Chen Zhijie and the rest of the Chen brothers.
"Zhijie, what the hell's happening?"
"You promised us nothing would happen! What's this now?"
"Damn it, my old lady's gonna have a coronary if she finds out I’m locked up."
"My mom will skin me alive if she hears about this!"
"Zhijie, do something! You’ve got connections, right? We can’t go to detention!"
"Yeah, once this goes on your record, you're done!"
The other Chens were sick with regret, especially the two who hadn’t even lifted a finger.
Honestly, they’d done nothing, yet they were dragged into this mess—no getting out of this.
"Will you shut the hell up! What the hell can I do when I’m locked up too?" Chen Zhijie snapped back.
"That’s not what you said before. You were talking big then."
"Exactly! What happened? You gonna throw us under the bus?"
"We’re only in this because of you. Why don't you man up and take the fall?"
Though they were cousins—some even brothers—their loyalty vanished quicker than you can blink.
Packed like sardines in that tiny interrogation room, they started tearing into each other like cornered rats.
On Su He's side, as soon as she stepped out of the police station, she saw Zai Zai, Niu Niu, Ms. Zhou, and Ji Liangchuan waiting for her at the entrance.
"Mama! Mama!" The two children cried out and ran toward her the moment they saw her.
Su He quickly crouched down and pulled them into her arms, comforting them, "Mama’s okay, no more tears, alright?"
Seeing Su He finally emerge, Ms. Zhou finally let out a relieved sigh.
After a quick look at Fu Tinghua and the others standing beside Su He, she stepped forward to say goodbye.
After what happened, Su He’s family clearly had things to talk about.
Earlier, when she went back to the stall, she had already learned the details from the neighboring vendors.
"Su He, you okay?" Ms. Zhou approached to express her concern.
"I’m fine, thank you for looking after the kids," Su He said gratefully.
"Oh, don’t mention it. Liangchuan and I’ll get going now and not disturb you.
If you need anything at all, just come find me at my place—don’t hesitate."
Su He was genuinely moved. Zhou Liqun had backed her up, even with the director breathing down his neck.
"Alright, I’ll stop by soon to thank you properly."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Ms. Zhou left with Ji Liangchuan.
"Let’s get going," Fu Tinghua said.
He ushered Su He and the others into a small car.
He, Su He, Fu Yanju, and the two children rode in one vehicle, while his two friends took another.
As soon as they got in the car, Su He reminded him, "Ting Hua, can you take me to the market? My cart is still there. And Aunt Niu—I don’t know if she’s waiting for me."
"Yeah, she’s probably there. She was the one who ran home to get help, and I happened to meet her on the way—that’s how I got there in time."
The whole ride, Fu Yanju didn’t say a word. Su He guessed her being there kept Fu Yanju from speaking up.
When the car stopped near the market and Su He prepared to get out, the kids refused to stay put.
"Listen! Stay here with Auntie and wait for Mommy! We’ll just grab our things and come right back."
Su He sighed, a little exasperated. Perhaps because of the earlier scare, the kids were extra clingy at the moment.
After some coaxing, they gave in.
As Su He was about to leave, Fu Tinghua also moved to follow.
She tugged him aside and said, "It’s not heavy—I’ll manage. Just take Fourth Sister and the kids home first. I’ll just wheel the cart back at my own pace."
Fu Tinghua frowned at the suggestion. He wasn’t about to let her go alone.
Noticing his handsome face crease into a frown, Su He stood on her toes and softly brushed away his frown.
"Alright, go ahead, okay?
Your sister's not doing well right now, so let's cut her some slack.
I'm not upset at all, really.
Once we get back, let her talk things through with Mom and Dad."
Fu Tinghua, however, felt that the current Su He was too good—
so good that he couldn't stand being apart from her.
Seriously, he didn't want to be away from her for even a moment.
Why was she so sensible? It seemed like in everything she did, she always thought of everyone else first, yet never considered herself.
"You acted a bit impulsively this time. Luckily I got there in time—if they'd laid hands on you..." Fu Tinghua said worriedly.
"Those scumbags—they needed a good beating. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have felt right."
Yet Su He, in a rare display of childishness, looked uncharacteristically indignant.
Seeing her still able to tease him like this, Fu Tinghua’s long-held gloom finally began to lift.
"Okay, I’ll use the payphone first, then head straight home with them. You—take care, come back quickly, alright?"
They had just reunited, and already he had to leave her again.
She always seemed so busy, Fu Tinghua couldn’t help but think.
"I know, really," Su He replied, half-laughing, half-exasperated.
Once they'd settled things, Su He went to convince the two children to go home with their father first. After some coaxing, they agreed.
Only after watching the car disappear from sight did Su He finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Arriving at her stall, she saw Auntie Niu packing up.
"Auntie Niu!" Su He called out excitedly.
"Ah, Miss Su, you're back! Is everything okay now?" Auntie Niu was clearly delighted.
"Everything's fine now—I just came to get my things."
"Your stuff's all here. I've got it ready for you. Come on, let's go."
The two pushed the cart together as they headed toward Shangyao Village.
