Chapter 67: Clingy

Su He glanced at the sun, which was climbing toward its zenith, and said, "Alright, I’ll go back to cook. Come to my place for lunch today."
"No, no, I’ll head back and help Mom cook instead," Chen Sufen quickly replied.
They’d suggested Su He go home to spare her the trouble—how could they then impose on her? Su He’s sisters-in-law squirmed at the thought.
"No big deal. Come over—I’m a quick cook," Su He answered with a smile.
Another glance at the midday sun, and she added, "I’ll go tell Mom first. It’s settled then."
Without waiting for their response, she started walking down the hill.
Her sisters-in-law’s shouts faded behind her—she wasn’t turning back.
At the bottom of the hill, Su He headed straight for the Fu family home.
With the sun beating down, Wu Yanhua had forbidden the children from running around, so they were all playing near the house.
Zai Zai and Niu Niu lit up the second they saw Su He and immediately dashed toward her.
"Mama! Mama!"
The two children shouted excitedly. Even though Su He had only been gone for a few hours, they missed her terribly.
Now that they knew how much she doted on them, they had grown even clingier.
At 'Mama!' from Zai Zai and Niu Niu, Zhuang Zhuang and the others also rushed toward Su He, yelling, "Aunt Su! Aunt Su!"
Su He: *[speechless]*
What’d they feed these kids while I was gone? How had she suddenly become so popular among the Fu family children?
Wu Yanhua scowled at the sight.
Little traitors—where’s *my* fanfare?
"Okay, okay!" Su He quickly responded to the children’s calls.
"Up, Mama!" Niu Niu begged, arms outstretched.
Su He picked her up, only for Zai Zai to stare at her with a conflicted expression.
Su He sighed and hoisted him up too.
Zhuang Zhuang brought up the rear, whining, "Auntie, I want a hug too!"
Su He: *[speechless]*
Where’s her third arm when she needed it?
At that moment, Wu Yanhua snagged Zhuang Zhuang’s ear and snapped, "Your aunt’s arms are full, you dumpling! Stop causing trouble!"
"Ow! Granny!" Zhuang Zhuang howled.
Su He bit back a laugh.
Once the little ones were grounded, she picked up Zhuang Zhuang, who was still being scolded by Wu Yanhua, and teased, "Whoa, Zhuang Zhuang’s built like a brick!"
Zhuang Zhuang didn't look overweight, but Su He could feel his weight was as much as Zai Zai and Niu Niu put together.
“Aunt, why hasn’t my mom come back yet?” Zhuang Zhuang suddenly asked.
So he was missing his mother. Su He smiled and replied, “Your mom and the others still have things to do. We’ll have lunch at my place today.”
The kids all whooped with excitement at the idea of eating at Su He’s house.
Wu Yanhua overheard Su He’s words and confirmed, “Going to your place?”
“Yes, let’s have lunch at my place today. I came down early to prepare the meal.”
Without another word, Wu Yanhua went into the kitchen, grabbed rice, sweet potatoes, and other fixings for lunch, then said to Su He, “Let’s go.”
Seeing her bring so much just for lunch at her place, Su He quickly stopped her. “Mom, there’s no need. I have everything at my place.”
“Don’t be silly. There are so many of us in this family, and we eat a lot. Don’t worry about it—I’ve already brought it.”
Seeing Wu Yanhua frown, clearly not in the best mood, Su He didn’t argue further.
Her mother-in-law was so thoughtful and unwilling to take advantage—what a wonderful trait.
Su He and Wu Yanhua herded the excited bunch toward Su He’s house. Villagers returning home to cook dinner couldn’t help admiring the family’s harmonious atmosphere.
Once they arrived at Su He’s place, though Su He insisted she could handle the cooking alone, Wu Yanhua jumped right in and started helping.
Looking at how Su He had transformed this once-run-down place into a clean and tidy space, Wu Yanhua was thoroughly impressed.
Su He really kept a good home.
With that thought, Wu Yanhua turned her gaze to Su He’s busy form.
Lately, Su He had slimmed down noticeably, and her appearance had changed dramatically.
Now that her fine features had emerged, she had become quite pretty.
Her fair skin looked almost glowing, as if it could be pinched to draw water.
Back when Su He was heavier, living in this remote part of the village hadn’t been an issue—nobody would've given her a second look.
But now that she was getting prettier every day, Wu Yanhua couldn’t help but feel a little worried.
“Su He, why don’t you and the kids move in with us?” Wu Yanhua suddenly suggested.
Su He was taken aback. She had no idea why her mother-in-law would suddenly want her to move in.
That wasn’t happening—she was used to her independence. Living with a big family? No way.
“We're doing just fine here, Mom. Why move?” Su He replied with a smile.
“This place is too far out. What if someone tries to steal from you in the middle of the night?”
Wu Yanhua frowned, her expression full of concern.
“Mom, what's gotten into you? With what I can do, who would dare break in?”
Remembering Su He’s combat prowess—equal to several men—Wu Yanhua shut right up.
Right. She had forgotten—Su He knew martial arts.
So they let the matter drop.
Seeing this, Su He couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
Truth be told, she had already obtained self-defense tools like stun guns and pepper spray from her storage.
Their place was pretty far from the village and close to the mountains, so Su He was also worried about snakes or insects crawling into the house. At least she knew how to handle them.
The two women got busy in the kitchen while the kids played outside Su He's house.
"Niu Niu, what do you think Auntie will make for us later?" Ya Ya whispered to Niu Niu, sharing girl talk.
"I don't know," Niu Niu shook her head, she said.
"Niu Niu, which boy do you think is the best-looking?" Ya Ya asked again.
"Handsome? Ji Liangchuan is the cutest!" Niu Niu immediately lit up, her eyes sparkling as if she had been asked about her favorite topic.
"Is he from our village? I don’t remember hearing that name," Ya Ya said, puzzled, unable to recall such a person.
"No, he’s from town."
"Oh, from town. I’ve only been to town a few times, but it was really fun when I went," Ya Ya said nostalgically.
"Yeah, town is really lively, and Mom can make money there."
