Chapter 436: Dr. Fu, Can I Talk to You?
by 范氏女子Chapter 436 Dr. Fu, Can We Talk?
"Wait—her ex-husband, her ex-husband. Please send someone to find Wen Yuru's ex-husband, Liu Jianjun. Yes, him. Have him brought here. I need to check."
Su He didn’t dare to speak with certainty, only asking the police to bring the man in so she could confirm.
She'd wracked her brain before but couldn’t recall this person. Then it suddenly hit her—
Su He had a gut feeling: it was him.
But he had no grudge against her. Why would he break into her home in the middle of the night?
Could he still be holding a grudge over Wen Yuru divorcing him back then?
Captain Liu signaled to the officers outside, and someone immediately went to carry out the task.
Soon, more and more people were called into the station, brought one by one into the conference room for Su He to identify.
Su He patiently looked at each one, never calling for the process to stop.
Though she already had a strong suspicion, she feared wrongly accusing an innocent person, so she kept checking them one by one.
"Captain Liu, Liu Jianjun's missing. We checked his place, but no one was there," reported the officers who had gone to search for him as soon as they discovered the situation.
Frowning, Captain Liu checked the resident records for Liu Jianjun.
"He has a mother. She wasn’t home either?" Captain Liu asked with a frown.
"No, no one was home," the officer replied.
"What about the earlier canvassing records? Where are they? Or who was in charge of Liu Jianjun’s neighborhood back then? Get him in here."
"I think it was Xiao Bai. I’ll call him."
Not wanting to bother Su He in the conference room, Fu Tinghua followed Captain Liu to the lobby sofa, waiting with him.
So he had naturally witnessed everything that had just happened.
Soon, Xiao Bai arrived.
"Captain Liu, you wanted me?" Xiao Bai hurried over, still catching his breath.
"You handled the investigation in the outskirts district, right?" Captain Liu asked.
"Yes, I did."
"Remember a Liu Jianjun?" Captain Liu pressed.
"Of course, I actually know the guy," Xiao Bai replied with an honest smile.
"You know him? What’s his deal lately?" Captain Liu instinctively questioned.
"His mother is sick, been bedridden recently. When I went for the investigation last time, she was still lying in bed."
"Lying in bed—did you verify it? Did you speak to her?" Captain Liu pressed further.
Xiao Bai scratched his head awkwardly. "No, I didn’t check. He said his mother wasn’t doing well and it wasn’t convenient to go in. I just vaguely saw someone lying on the bed—didn't get close enough to check. Besides, I’ve never met his mother before. Even if I had gone in, it wouldn't have meant anything."
Captain Liu was nearly driven mad by Xiao Bai’s dumbass thinking. Through clenched teeth, he snapped, "How would it not help? How? You don't even know if the person lying there was real, a mannequin, or someone kidnapped? God, you’ll be the death of me!"
"Ah? It shouldn't be a dummy..." Xiao Bai muttered sheepishly.
He knew it—he shouldn’t have assigned someone too honest to handle the door-to-door checks, especially someone who knew Liu Jianjun.
"By the way, how do you know Liu Jianjun?" Captain Liu asked again.
"He—he used to be in the military, quite famous in the army too. His combat skills were among the best. And thanks to his father-in-law’s connections, he had a lot of influence there. I don’t know what’s happened to him recently—he’s just been staying at home, doesn't even report for duty anymore. It’s a bit strange," Xiao Bai muttered.
"You knew it was strange—and you didn’t pay extra attention to him?" Captain Liu’s words came out through clenched teeth.
"Why should I pay attention to him? He’s a soldier—no way he'd be a suspect," Xiao Bai said reflexively.
Captain Liu: "......"
He turned to Xiao Chen beside him and said, "I’m going to make a call."
Naturally, he was going to check in with command. The mayor and the police chief had already gone back to their offices—they couldn’t camp out here all day dealing with this.
Before long, Captain Liu returned and ordered all his subordinates to put out an APB on Liu Jianjun.
As soon as the order was issued, everyone in the police station mobilized.
At that moment, Mu Beicheng, who had been summoned, arrived.
He looked far more subdued than before, not a trace left of his old swagger.
To get divorced, he had walked away with just the shirt on his back—decades of hard work all gone to waste. You couldn't tell if it was noble or just dumb.
"Mu Beicheng?" Captain Liu stepped forward as soon as he saw him.
"Yes, I’m Mu Beicheng," Mu Beicheng nodded.
"Good, come with me."
Now that Liu Jianjun had shot to the top of the suspect list, Captain Liu’s suspicion of Mu Beicheng had dialed back a notch, but he still had doubts.
Mu Beicheng spotted Fu Tinghua lounging on the sofa, watching him, and gave him a nod.
Fu Tinghua didn’t respond, just watched as Mu Beicheng walked past him.
"Miss Su, Mu Beicheng is here," Captain Liu called out the moment he stepped in the meeting room.
Su He looked up, her eyes meeting Mu Beicheng’s.
"Miss Su, you wanted to see me? And at the police station?" Mu Beicheng asked, puzzled.
Su He searched his eyes, then was doubly sure that it hadn’t been him last night. She shook her head at Captain Liu.
"It’s not him. I’m sure," Su He said firmly.
Mu Beicheng had no idea what game they were playing, but reading the room, he remained silent.
"Alright, understood. Mr. Mu, appreciate you coming in to cooperate with our investigation. There’s nothing else for now—you're free to go."
Captain Liu took Su He at her word. If she was certain it wasn’t him, then he had no choice but to cut him loose.
Besides, without sufficient evidence, they couldn’t just go around locking people up willy-nilly.
Mu Beicheng gave them both a nod and made his exit.
As he passed by Fu Tinghua, Mu Beicheng's footsteps paused involuntarily.
"Dr. Fu, can I talk to you?" Mu Beicheng asked with a smile.
Fu Tinghua glanced up at him, as if remembering something, then stood up as well.
The two walked outside the police station and stopped at a quiet spot. Mu Beicheng asked, "Dr. Fu, you're from the same village as Liu Yi, right?"
"Yes," Fu Tinghua replied indifferently.
"Hah, he always said he envied a man from his village who was about the same age—said the guy had a successful career, a happy family—living the life he always wanted."
At this point, Mu Beicheng couldn't help but pull out a cigarette and lit it.
Seeing this, Fu Tinghua frowned and stepped back.
"Dr. Fu doesn't smoke? My apologies, I didn't know." Mu Beicheng immediately stubbed out the cigarette.
