Chapter 437: I Think—He Probably Didn’t Come to Kill Me

"Whenever I feel agitated, I can’t help but smoke. Sorry about that," Mu Beicheng said with genuine regret.
"You’ve hurt a lot of people," Fu Tinghua suddenly remarked.
Mu Beicheng stiffened at his words, then gave a bitter smile. "Yes, I’ve hurt a lot of people."
"His suicide note didn’t mention you once," Fu Tinghua said, looking up at Mu Beicheng with open scorn.
"Rightfully so. Someone like me—who am I to deserve it?"
"And Yunyang’s sister—she was the last person you should have hurt. Before you cheated, you should have considered your wife. Then things wouldn’t have led to someone’s death." Fu Tinghua seemed to have run out of patience. After saying this, he walked away.
Watching his retreating figure, Mu Beicheng seemed to age a decade in an instant.
Wen City—it wasn’t his place anymore.
Captain Liu entered the meeting room and said to Su He, "Liu Jianjun has fled."
"What?" Su He nearly dropped her pen.
"Liu Jianjun’s door was locked from the inside, but there was no one home. Officers canvassed the neighbors, who said Liu Jianjun would often come out to chat with them, but his mother hadn’t been seen in a long time. Liu Jianjun told them it was because his wife divorced him, and his mother was so devastated she fell ill, and wouldn't see anyone. I suspect..."
Captain Liu paused, leaving the rest unsaid.
"One of the pregnant women who died—was she Liu Jianjun’s mother?" Su He blurted out.
"Yes. His house was empty. If his mother was truly bedridden, how could she not be home? We also scoured local hospitals—just got word that none admitted a patient matching Liu Jianjun’s mother. Officers are still checking farther hospitals, but no word yet."
Captain Liu didn’t know why, but he found himself going over the case with Su He.
"Captain Liu, please send more officers to my home to protect my family. I’m afraid Liu Jianjun’s primary target will be me." The more Su He thought about it, the more panicked she became.
"Relax. We’ve got extra cops posted around your house. If anyone tries to break in, we’ll arrest them immediately," Captain Liu assured her.
Su He felt that trusting others wasn’t enough—she had to protect them herself, especially when it came to her two young children. They absolutely could not be harmed!
"Captain Liu, we’re done here for today. Can my husband and I go home now?" Su He asked again.
"Miss Su, I think you’re safer here at the station. I just looked into it—Liu Jianjun’s rank in the military was mid-level, but not nothing. Right now, we don’t know if he’s armed."
At his words, Su He’s pulse raced—she had to get home.
"Captain Liu, I need to go home," Su He insisted.
"Alright. But watch your back," Captain Liu relented, though he didn’t insist she stay.
In truth, Su He not being at the station worked to their advantage.
What better way to smoke out a killer than with the very bait they were desperate to catch?
It was cold-blooded, but Captain Liu couldn’t deny that Su He was essentially walking bait right now—which was why he still wanted to persuade her to stay.
Su He stood up, her lips twisted into a grim smile. "Besides, the case needs progress. If I don’t show myself, and Liu Jianjun doesn’t either, who’s to say who he’ll go after next?"
Hearing this, Captain Liu’s eyes widened.
So, Miss Su herself knows she's a moving target?
"From everyone in Wencheng, I sincerely thank you, Miss Su," Captain Liu said with genuine gratitude.
Su He paused in her steps but didn't respond before walking away.
She was never the type to put others first—it was just that, in this situation, she and her family were in the most danger.
For the sake of her family, she couldn't afford to sit back and do nothing.
Seeing Su He come out, Fu Tinghua also stood up.
The two shared a look, immediately knowing each other's thoughts.
"Let's go home," Su He said, extending her hand toward Fu Tinghua.
"Let's go," Fu Tinghua took her hand firmly and led her out of the police station.
Captain Liu stepped out and instructed a few officers, "Send people to follow and protect them. Nothing can happen to them!"
With Fu Tinghua by her side, if anything went wrong, Wencheng might very well be labeled one of the most dangerous cities to live in the country.
No safety means no point staying.
Once Su He and Fu Tinghua were in the car, Fu Tinghua glanced at her and couldn't help asking, "You alright?"
Su He shook her head and said, "I never expected that person to be someone I know—and him, of all people. The first time I saw Liu Jianjun, he was in military uniform, and I thought he must be a very stand-up guy. The next two times, he came to plead with Yu Ru to forgive him. But why would he target me? I don’t think—he wasn’t there to kill me."
Su He had a gut feeling that even if she hadn't woken up that night, Liu Jianjun wouldn’t have killed her.
He hadn’t even found her room—just the children’s. Maybe he wanted to use the kids against her?
"One of the deceased women is most likely his mother," Fu Tinghua suddenly said.
Su He found it hard to believe, she thought. "Could anyone really be that cruel to their own mother?"
Fu Tinghua nodded, then shook his head.
"Some people, when driven over the edge, might truly snap completely. By tomorrow, we should know the identities of the two victims," Fu Tinghua said with certainty.
"I hope so. Right now, I’m just afraid his real targets aren't me, but Zai Zai and Niu Niu."
Su He thought her two kids shouldn’t come to harm this young.
But now she also felt her arrival had already changed how things were supposed to go, so anything could change.
She couldn’t let her guard down—her children couldn’t be harmed.
Seeing her tension, Fu Tinghua reached over and held her hand. "Don’t worry. I’ve taken time off to stay home with you all."
"Okay," Su He agreed immediately.
With Fu Tinghua around, she felt safer.
His strong presence was so comforting.
Having him by her side helped her relax a little.
