Chapter 488 Some Things Are Deep-Rooted for the Older Generation

"It's been a long time since we last came here," Wen Qing mused aloud.
She and Su Shiming had only been to Shangyao village once before, and that was during Fu Tinghua and Su He's wedding reception.
But the memories from that time weren't as pleasant as they are now.
"Yes, you should come more often. It's so nice for the whole family to be together, lively and cozy," Wu Yanhua quickly chimed in.
Su He was holding Niu Niu, while Fu Tinghua carried Zai Zai, and the two of them walked at the back.
Aunt Lan walked ahead of them, seeming to be in a pretty good mood too.
As soon as Fu Yanju returned to her parents' home, she was bustling about, helping to prepare lunch.
Even though it was her own family home, perhaps because she had gotten used to staying at Su He's place, she didn't feel as comfortable in the Fu household as she did at Su He's.
"Lunch is just about ready!" He Fangfang said as she came out to the living room with a smile.
"Oh? You knew we were coming?" Su Shiming asked Fu Dajun, a bit surprised.
"We didn't know it would be today, but we figured it would be within the next day or two, so we always made sure to cook enough. Anyway, it's so cold now that the food from lunch can still be eaten in the evening," Fu Dajun said with a chuckle.
Eating leftovers was no big deal these days, having something to eat at all was already pretty good.
With such a large family sitting down to eat together, there were just too many people, so they had to split into two tables.
The men sat at one table, and the women and children sat at the other.
Now, it was really time for drinks.
Isn’t the New Year all about sitting around eating and drinking, and going house to house?
Su He got pulled over to sit at the men’s table with Fu Tinghua—there was no getting out of it.
"Su He, you drinking?" Fu Dajun asked with a smile.
"Huh? My sweetie doesn’t drink," Su Shiming said, a bit puzzled.
"She doesn’t. Last time she said she wanted to try, so I poured her a bit of my liquor, and she was tipsy after just two sips," Fu Dajun said with a laugh.
"That happened?" Su Shiming was very surprised.
"Yeah, so my liquor is really strong—no joke," Fu Dajun started again, showing off about his liquor.
He boasted to everyone he met, praising his liquor—the Fu family was long used to it.
Su Shiming didn’t think much of Su He drinking; he just felt that Su He was really letting her guard down around the Fu family.
Moreover, since the Fu family didn’t see any problem with their daughter-in-law drinking, and Su Shiming, who had always doted on his daughter and believed she was no less capable than any man, didn’t see an issue either.
"Hahaha, so did Tinghua take care of Su He afterward?" Su Shiming asked, whether intentionally or not.
Although his son-in-law was good with his daughter, it was important to see whether he was willing to take care of Su He when she was drunk.
"Yeah, it was Tinghua who took care of her. None of us noticed Su He was drunk—only Tinghua did. The young couple really get along well," Fu Dajun said, beaming proudly again.
Su Shiming was also happy to hear this and laughed along.
"Come on, come on, take a sip. I'll finish mine!" Fu Dajun said, chugging the small half-cup.
The liquor was so strong it made Fu Dajun’s face scrunch up.
"Then I’ll finish mine too!" Su Shiming was no stranger to drinking either, but he had previously avoided alcohol due to high blood pressure.
But since Su He gave him that miraculous medicine, his blood pressure had been under control, and now he felt safe having a little.
On such a happy occasion, Wen Qing and Wu Yanhua didn’t want to kill the vibe by telling the two to drink less.
So by the end of the meal, only Fu Dajun and Su Shiming were still drinking; everyone else had finished eating.
"You have no idea how grateful our whole family is to Su He for getting us into business!" Fu Dajun was clearly drunk, his words beginning to slur.
"We’re all family here—no need to stand on ceremony. Let’s all live well together from now on. My daughter’s the kindest person you’ll ever meet." Even though Su Shiming’s head was swimming too, he was overjoyed to talk about his daughter.
Especially when others praised Su He, he was always eager to chat more.
In the end, both men had to be helped out of the stove room, completely wasted.
Fu Tinghua carried his father-in-law on his back and got him into the car. Except for Fu Yanju and her daughter, who stayed behind, everyone else went to Su He’s place.
Although Su He’s home had only two rooms, the house was actually quite spacious.
It was more than enough to section off part of the space near the hallway by the stove room to create an additional bedroom.
Aunt Lan suggested that the room should go to Su Shiming and his wife, and she would stay in the partitioned space.
But Wen Qing strongly objected.
Before coming, she and Su Shiming had already agreed: she’d bunk with Aunt Lan, and Su Shiming would sleep alone.
Generally, no matter whose home they visited, married couples weren’t allowed to share a room.
Aunt Lan had never visited other homes with Gu Yanzhi, so she wasn’t aware of this custom.
Although Su He didn’t fully get rural customs either, she always respected the older generation’s ways.
Some beliefs were deeply ingrained in the older generation, and she had no intention of disrupting them or making anyone uncomfortable.
