Chapter 115 Children’s Happiness is So Simple
by 范氏女子Chapter 115: Kids Find Joy in the Simplest Things
Back home, Su He got to work cleaning.
She changed the bedsheets and duvet covers on both beds, then took the old ones to wash. Too bad washing machines weren't common yet.
If she could be lazy, Su He would gladly choose to be, but in this era where you couldn't get much of anything, you couldn't just slack off. If she wanted to relax in the future, she’d have to earn more money first.
"Mom, mom, is Brother Chuan coming to play at our house tomorrow?"
Just as Su He finished washing the clothes and bedding, Niu Niu rushed over to ask.
"I'm not sure if he’s coming tomorrow or the day after, but if he does, it should be within these two days," Su He replied with a smile.
"Mom, are we really having French fries tomorrow?"
After watching Su He hang the laundry to dry, Zai Zai couldn’t help but ask.
Their mom had mentioned frying potatoes for them before, but it seemed she had forgotten about it later.
"Of course it’s true. Just wait and enjoy them tomorrow."
Su He’s answer got both kids all excited, making them wish tomorrow would come right away.
Before leaving earlier, Su He had asked Aunt Niu to check on the chickens and the vegetable patch near her house when she came to pick vegetables.
So the two chickens were still nice and plump in the backyard.
Su He decided that if Ji Liangchuan came over, she would kill one of the chickens. Remember when Ms. Zhou had brought two chickens to her door and even gave her twenty yuan?
She couldn’t skimp when it came to her grandson.
For dinner, Su He stir-fried tomatoes with eggs and made some greens too. She had cooked these dishes before, and both kids gave them thumbs up.
Life in the countryside was so comfortable—quiet and cool in the evenings.
After their baths, the two children climbed onto the bed, bouncing excitedly on the bed.
"Alright, you two play. I’m going to take my bath too."
After reminding the kids, Su He went to shower and did her usual skincare routine.
Her skin had been improving lately, thanks to the high-end skincare products from her space. Those luxury skincare items weren’t expensive in the space, so she could use them without guilt.
By the time she got into bed, the two children were out like lights.
Goodnight, my sweet babies.
As she lay in bed and closed her eyes, Fu Tinghua’s handsome face popped into her head, she thought.
She wondered what he was doing right now and whether he missed her.
Back then, she'd insisted that since it hadn't been long, she wasn't sad to leave.
But who would’ve thought that on the very first day apart, Su He was already missing him.
On Fu Tinghua's side, after work, he went to the hospital cafeteria for dinner.
His doctor buddies were there too. Seeing that he didn’t go home for a meal, Chen Jinrong couldn’t help but tease, "Hey, our Deputy Director, no home-cooked meal today?"
His tone was oozing sarcasm.
"Yep, she went back to the countryside," Fu Tinghua replied flatly.
"Hey, wanna grab drinks with us tonight?" Yao Wentao asked, unable to resist.
Fu Tinghua thought for a moment and declined.
"I’m married now. Can’t be running wild with you all."
"Tsk tsk tsk, Fu Tinghua, who’re you showing off for?" Wu Di laughed and scolded.
"Isn’t it obvious? I don’t want my wife to misunderstand," Fu Tinghua said, raising an eyebrow.
Seeing his smug expression as he flaunted his lovey-dovey side, the other three were left speechless.
Who would’ve thought the usually icy, quiet Dr. Fu would turn into this kind of person when in love—flaunting it to the whole world?
The next day, Ji Liangchuan and Ms. Zhou showed up right after Su He and the kids finished breakfast.
The three children were overjoyed the moment they saw each other.
Ms. Zhou also began making small talk with Su He. "Hope we’re not intruding."
"Not at all! Look how happy Zai Zai and Niu Niu are to see Liangchuan."
"Chuan has been looking forward to this too. He kept saying yesterday that he wanted to come. I told him you might not return to the village until Monday, so you could rest properly for a day without being disturbed."
Su He quickly agreed, "We did just get back yesterday at noon."
"Then the timing is just perfect."
They shared a look and smiled at each other.
Ms. Zhou only stayed for a short while before driving back.
Su He tried to persuade her to stay for lunch, but she said she had other matters to attend to. After reminding Ji Liangchuan of the rules, she drove away.
This time, Ji Liangchuan seemed especially excited to be at Su He’s place because he got to stay at Aunt Su’s longer.
Aunt Su had mentioned they wouldn’t go back to the city until Sunday, and this time, they might be in the city long-term. So, his grandma said he could stay until Saturday when she’d come to pick him up.
Though he was sad to leave Aunt Su and the others, his grandma promised to take him into the city to play later.
His big uncle worked downtown, so they could visit him too.
Gotta hand it to the male lead—connections everywhere. Su He muttered to herself after overhearing Ji Liangchuan and Ms. Zhou’s conversation.
After Ms. Zhou left, since it was still early, Su He started preparing the ingredients to make fries.
She called out to the kids, "Tear off toward Grandma’s house and call Zhuang Zhuang and Ya Ya over. Mom’s making fries!"
The kids tore off toward the village, racing each other.
This must be what childhood looks like, carefree joy just like these three kids before me.
Watching their backs walk away, Su He felt she had finally succeeded in giving her two little rascals a wonderful childhood.
"Big Brother Zhuang Zhuang, Sister Ya Ya, Big Brother Niu Niu, Big Brother Shi Tou, come to my house! My mom is making French fries!" Niu Niu's loud voice rang out even before reaching the Fu household.
Compared to the timid and fearful Niu Niu when Su He first arrived, the girl had now grown increasingly outgoing and bold.
Seeing the kids running so fast, Wu Yanhua quickly cautioned, "Oh dear, slow down, slow down! What if you fall?"
Just then, Da Ya also came out of the house.
Da Ya was the eldest daughter of Fu Guoqing and Zhang Xiaohua, the only child in school in the family, so she rarely got to play with this group of kids.
"What are French fries?" Da Ya asked Niu Niu curiously.
"French fries are... they're..."
Niu Niu tried to explain, but having never tasted them herself, she couldn't quite articulate what they were.
"Take your younger siblings to your aunt's house. Oh, and bring this bag of potatoes and yams along." Wu Yanhua started giving more supplies to Su He's household again.
Yesterday when she gave the clothes Su He bought to her husband, the old man was so delighted he kept saying the clothes were too nice - he worked in the fields all day, he couldn't bring himself to wear them.
He said that, but his grin never faded.
"Grandma, aren't you coming?" Da Ya asked.
"I can't go. I need to make lunch for your parents later."
"Grandma, let me stay and help you," said the thoughtful girl.
"Go play with your younger siblings. Your aunt makes the tastiest food."
Looking at her sensible eldest granddaughter, Wu Yanhua couldn't help but adore her.
