    Chapter 106: Rescue

The next day, Su He slept in.

In the city, you could buy breakfast.

So Fu Tinghua let her sleep in, saying he’d pick up breakfast when he went out in the morning.

He didn’t want Su He to keep wearing herself out by waking up early to prepare meals for the family of four.

If money could fix it, Fu Tinghua preferred that Su He get some rest.

When she woke up, Su He saw the baozi, soy milk, and youtiao Fu Tinghua had left on the dining table.

After having a quick breakfast with the two kids, Su He took them to check out the shops near the hospital.

Opening a small supermarket near the hospital would be a great spot.

After all, hospitals always had a steady crowd.

But after walking around, Su He was disappointed—nearly every shop was taken, and none were up for rent.

The People’s Hospital was the best in the city, and its location was excellent, right in downtown.

In this era, train stations were the busiest spots. The station wasn’t far from where they lived, so Su He decided to head over and check it out.

“We’ll just walk around. If you get too tired, let me know, okay?” Su He reminded the kids, worried they might wear themselves out.

“Mom, I’m not tired,” Zai Zai said, looking obedient as he looked up at Su He.

“Me neither,” Niu Niu chimed in, skipping around in her pretty dress, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed even early in the morning.

As they walked, they passed an alley, and Su He suddenly heard a faint cry for help.

The voice was extremely weak, but Su He caught it.

She’d always had sharp hearing, maybe from her martial arts and taekwondo training.

“Did you hear something?” Su He asked.

“I didn’t hear anything,” Niu Niu answered instinctively.

Zai Zai, however, stopped walking and listened carefully for a moment before saying, “Mom, I think there is a sound.”

Seeing the empty alley, Niu Niu got scared and grabbed Su He’s sleeve. “Mom, I’m scared.”

Not knowing what was inside, Su He didn’t want the kids to risk going in. She crouched down to comfort Niu Niu. “It’s okay, sweetie.”

Then she turned to Zai Zai, who remained calm, and said, “Zai Zai, can you wait here with your sister? Take good care of her, and don’t run off, okay?”

Zai Zai glanced at the deserted alley, hesitant about letting his mom go in alone. But being so young, he didn’t have the words to express his concern, so he nodded and agreed.

“Mom knows you’re the best. I’ll just take a quick look and come right back.”

With that, Su He hurried into the alley.

The two kids stood obediently where they were, watching their mom walk away, not daring to move.

"Gege, I want to go with Mom," Niu Niu pouted.

"Don’t make things harder for Mom," Zai Zai frowned, scolding his sister sternly.

Niu Niu huffed at this and ignored her mean big brother.

Su He walked to the end of the alley and glanced both ways. To the right, she saw a very pregnant woman leaning against the wall, mumbling things that made no sense. Though Su He couldn’t understand her words, it was clear the woman wasn’t fully aware of her surroundings.

    Oh no!

Su He didn’t hesitate—saving her was the priority.

She quickly checked the woman. There was no blood or signs of a fall or impact on her belly. Touching her forehead, Su He found it burning—she had a high fever.

A pregnant woman so feverish she’s out of it!

No time to lose—she had to get her to the hospital. Luckily, the People’s Hospital was just a block away.

Su He lifted the woman. From the size of her belly, she must be six or seven months along, yet she was surprisingly light.

No time to think about that—Su He carried her out of the alley.

Seeing their mom come out, the kids let out a sigh of relief. But spotting the unconscious woman in her arms, they grew worried again.

"Zai Zai, call a ride!" Su He shouted as soon as she saw them.

Sharp Zai Zai immediately hailed a passing pedicab.

Su He, strong and trained in martial arts, swiftly carried the woman to the pedicab.

"Whoa, what’s going on?" the driver asked, eyeing the unconscious pregnant woman in Su He’s arms.

"She’s burning up. To the People’s Hospital, please. Hurry!" Su He urged.

Folks back then were kinder, especially in emergencies. Unlike later generations, they didn’t hesitate over "whether to help" or fear "getting into trouble."

Most importantly, there was no precedent for "fraudulent claims," so people were eager to lend a hand.

Once everyone was aboard, the driver hit the gas, speeding toward the hospital.

Upon arrival, Su He told the kids to stay close and rushed inside with the woman.

A nurse who had seen her the day before came over. Recognizing her as Dr. Fu’s wife, the nurse asked, "What do you need?"

Su He perked up. "Quick, get a stretcher! This pregnant woman is out of it—I don’t know anything else."

The nurse jumped to it. The hospital responded swiftly, and soon a stretcher was wheeled out, letting Su He finally put her down.

It wasn’t until she saw the woman being taken for emergency care that Su He relaxed.

She just hoped the woman would pull through.

The nurse hung back awkwardly before asking, "Do you know how to reach her family?"

Su He shook her head, "I don't know her. I saw her passed out on the way, so I brought her in."

Seeing the nurse's troubled expression, Su He seemed to realize something and asked, "Do you need to pay an admission deposit? I’ll go pay it and cover it for her first."

"Yes, yes!" the nurse said eagerly.

From then on, she thought even more highly of Su He.

The Deputy Director’s wife really was as beautiful and kind-hearted as they said.

Starting today, she’d be her biggest supporter and wouldn’t join in the gossip about her anymore.

After Su He went to handle the admission paperwork for the pregnant woman, Fu Tinghua showed up.

Seeing him, Su He couldn’t help but feel surprised and asked, "What are you doing here?"

"Someone came to inform me that you were at the hospital. Are you okay? What happened?" Fu Tinghua’s eyes were filled with concern.

The nurse who had gone to find him told him that Su He was at the hospital and currently handling admission paperwork.

He didn’t even wait to hear the rest—he just rushed right over.
