The car wound its way down the country road, with Zai Zai and Niu Niu sitting in the back seat, while Su He rode shotgun this time.
Fu Tinghua, being selfish, fibbed to the kids, saying that Mom needed to sit up front to watch him practice driving.
The kids, who knew Su He’s driving all too well: “......”
Whatever makes you happy.
Only Su He actually believed it, hopping into the passenger seat under the impression that Fu Tinghua really wanted her to learn how to drive.
Soon enough, she realized she’d been tricked—Dr. Fu kept taking her left hand in his right every chance he got.
Su He wanted to say this was dangerous, but the road was practically empty, and Fu Tinghua wasn’t speeding.
“You did this on purpose, didn’t you?” Su He couldn’t help asking.
Fu Tinghua kept his eyes forward, focused on driving.
Hearing her words, he grinned and shot back, “What do you think?”
Su He: “......”
Typical—he’d tricked her again.
“Eyes on the road,” Su He said, trying to wiggle her hand free, but she couldn’t pull away.
How could one man be this strong?
“Don’t move, or I’ll get distracted.”
At his words, Su He froze instantly.
Back when she’d watch dramas where the male lead held the female lead’s hand while driving, she’d roll her eyes at how cheesy and unrealistic it was.
Now that it was happening to her—well… how to explain this?
It was actually… kind of nice?
Peeking back at the kids, she saw both were fast asleep on the rear seat.
“We’re almost there.”
At Fu Tinghua’s words, Su He instinctively looked ahead.
Sure enough, they’d arrived at the village entrance.
Seeing the familiar village, Su He felt like a lifetime had passed, even though she had only been gone for a week.
This place was special to her—it was where she had first arrived in this world.
They began spotting familiar villagers along the way, all eyeing the car curiously.
“Is that the Fu family’s youngest son behind the wheel?” someone asked.
“Looks like it. Well, well—the Fu family sure is something now. Wasn’t it a different car last time?”
“That Fu family’s youngest is really going places.”
The car pulled up to the Fu family home, where Wu Yanhua was sitting at the front door keeping an eye on her grandkids.
Fu Tinghua pulled up to the house and got out.
Noticing this, Su He unbuckled too and followed him out.
Wu Yanhua was spacing out when she suddenly heard Fu Tinghua call out, “Mom.”
She jolted upright in surprise and saw Fu Tinghua standing right in front of her.
“Ting Hua! You’re home!”
She then looked toward the car.
At that moment, Su He was waking up Zai Zai and Niu Niu.
“Su He, Zai Zai, and Niu Niu are all back too?” She couldn’t stop grinning.
“Yeah, we’re back,” Fu Tinghua replied.
As if remembering something, Wu Yanhua quickly asked, “Yan Ju didn’t come back, did she?”
“No, I told Sis to stay away for now.”
Wu Yanhua let out a relieved sigh and said with lingering fear, “Good. You wouldn’t believe it—these past few days the Chen family has been showing up every other day looking for Yan Hua.
I heard the town police chief is under investigation and already locked up. Chen Zhijie seems to be connected to that police chief somehow.
Thankfully, our Yan Ju is clean in all this and has already burned bridges with the Chens.
Now they’re trying to get Yan Ju back—who knows what they’re up to.”
“Hmm, they’ve got no hold over Sis now. She’s already got the divorce papers,” Fu Tinghua said calmly.
“No way! Already?” Wu Yanhua exclaimed in delight.
“What about Wan Er? Who got custody?” This was what she cared about most.
“Wan Er’s with my sister. Relax, Mom.” Fu Tinghua reassured her.
“That’s good, good. The Chen family is still covering up the fact that Wan Er went missing.
When they came looking, they kept saying Yan Ju couldn’t care less about Wan Er’s life. That whole family’s rotten.
If Wan Er hadn’t found her way to us, and if she really had gone missing, would they even have cared whether Wan Er lived or died?” Wu Yanhua said angrily.
Just then, Su He came over with the kids to greet Wu Yanhua.
“Mom.”
“Grandma.”
Her scowl melted away into a warm smile.
“Ah, Su He, Zai Zai, Niu Niu—come on in and sit with Grandma.”
“Grandma, I brought gifts for Ya Ya and the others,” Niu Niu bragged proudly.
Ya Ya had been watching for them already. Hearing that, she came running over.
"Niu Niu!" She rushed up to Niu Niu.
"Niu Niu, look what I brought you—some really cute hair clips!"
After saying that, Niu Niu took out the hair clips she had bought from her bag.
They were sparkly—exactly the kind kids love.
"Wow! So pretty!"
"How about you, Zai Zai? Did you bring something for your brothers too?" Su He asked her son with a smile.
"Yeah."
Zai Zai coolly pulled out a toy car from his bag—a tiny one—the bigger ones cost too much, and he didn’t want Mom to spend extra. But the kids were still excited about the little cars.
"Wow! Thanks, Zai Zai!"
Once they got their toys, the kids ran off to play.
Zai Zai and Niu Niu didn’t act distant at all from the Fu family kids, even after spending a few days in the city.
"Are you hungry? I figured you’d be back this weekend, so I cooked," Wu Yanhua said with a smile.
"Dad and the others should be home from work soon."
She looked Su He over—somehow, after just a week apart, Su He looked even thinner.
"Su He, you’ve lost enough weight already. You’re way too thin now."
Su He hadn’t paid much attention to her weight in a while—she’d been too busy, and she had already nearly reached her goal weight, so she hadn’t been keeping track.
"Really? I lost more? I wasn’t even trying—it just came off by itself," Su He said helplessly.
"Geez, what if you keep losing weight? Eat up, get some meat on your bones," Wu Yanhua urged.
Hearing her mother-in-law’s words, Su He didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh.
She had just succeeded in losing weight—now she was being told to gain it back?
She checked her arms—they really had gotten thinner.
"Don’t worry, Mom. I took Su He for a full medical checkup—there’s nothing wrong with her health," Fu Tinghua chimed in, backing Su He up.
"That’s good, that’s good."
Wu Yanhua let out a relieved sigh. Her son was a doctor—if he said she was fine, she was fine.
Su He headed to the kitchen, where Third Sister-in-law Chen Sufen was cooking. Chen Sufen’s face brightened when she saw Su He.
"Su He, you’re back? Did Ting Hua come too?" Chen Sufen greeted.
"Yes, Third Sister-in-law, we’re both back."
