As soon as they arrived at the Fu family's doorstep, Su He hopped out of the car.

"I'll just go tell Mom. You all wait here in the car," she said before closing the car door.

"Mom, are you home?" Su He called out.

The rest of the Fu family were still out working in the fields today and likely wouldn’t rest until the afternoon.

So, the cake would probably be eaten in the evening.

Wu Yanhua was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for the kids. In rural areas, many didn’t have the habit of eating breakfast and just went straight to the mid-morning meal.

"What is it?" Wu Yanhua came out and asked.

At that moment, Fu Yanju also followed her out of the kitchen.

She’d stayed home instead of working in the fields today.

"Fourth Sister," Su He responded with a smile before adding, "Ting Hua and I are taking the kids to town. It’s Zai Zai and Niu Niu’s birthday today, and we want to invite their friend from town to celebrate with us. I just wanted to give you a heads-up."

Hearing this, Wu Yanhua immediately said, "Oh, then I’ll cook your portions along with ours later."

"No need, Mom. No need to cook for us. We’ll just have a bowl of noodles in town. Not sure when we’ll be back," Su He quickly declined.

"Aiya, I’ll just cook it anyway. If you don’t eat it, we can always save the leftovers," Wu Yanhua insisted, ignoring her refusal and preparing their portions as well.

Just last night, Wu Yanhua had even told Fu Yanju to help Su He, but now Su He was going to town instead.

Not wanting to press the matter, Su He changed the subject and asked, "Mom, Fourth Sister, do you two want to come to town with us? It’s market day in town today—is there anything you need to buy?"

"Aiya, what would we need to buy? We don’t need a thing from town." Even though they had just received their share of the harvest profits yesterday, none of the Fu family members were willing to spend money.

Wu Yanhua and Fu Dajun had been saving up, hoping to build a proper brick house for their youngest son.

"What about you, Fourth Sister? Want to come to town?" Su He turned to Fu Yanju.

"No, I won’t go," Fu Yanju quickly refused.

There was still a lot of work at home, and after being caught and beaten by Chen Zhijie in town last time, she was too scared to go back.

"Alright, we’re heading off now, Mom, Fourth Sister. We’ll see you later." Su He bid them goodbye and left.

Watching her back as she walked away, Fu Yanju felt a pang of envy.

To celebrate Zai Zai and Niu Niu’s birthday, they even made a special trip to invite a friend from town.

Fu Tinghua didn’t waste time and parked the car right in front of Ji Liangchuan’s grandmother’s bookstore.

The bookstore was open, but there was no telling if Ji Liangchuan was around.

As soon as the car stopped, Su He got out and opened the door for Niu Niu and Zai Zai. Niu Niu bolted out and sprinted to the bookstore.

While running, she called out, "Liangchuan! Liangchuan!"

Ji Liangchuan was sitting at the cash register, helping his grandma run the store.

The moment he heard Niu Niu’s voice, he couldn’t stay seated and rushed out.

"Niu Niu! Zai Zai!" Seeing his two little friends, Ji Liangchuan, who’d been bored, suddenly perked up.

"Liangchuan, why haven’t you come to the city to play with us? My brother and I have been waiting for you for so long!" Niu Niu asked right away the question that had been on her mind.

"Grandma’s been swamped lately because my uncle just got promoted, so she has a lot to handle. She promised she’d bring me to see you after the Mid-Autumn Festival," Ji Liangchuan replied.

"Yay, that’s great!" Niu Niu exclaimed excitedly.

Su He and Fu Tinghua, trailing behind, exchanged glances.

Just then, Ms. Zhou heard the commotion and came out.

"Su He! You’re back?" she said while giving Su He a once-over.

After not seeing her for a while, Su He seemed to have gotten thinner and even prettier.

Glancing at her husband, Ms. Zhou thought, *They really are a perfect pair.*

"Yes, Granny Liangchuan, long time no see," Su He replied with a smile.

"Today is Zai Zai and Niu Niu’s birthday, and we’d love for you to join the celebration," Su He added.

"That’s right, Liangchuan! Today is my and my brother’s birthday. Mom’s making us a cake! Liangchuan, will you and Grandma come to the village with us to celebrate?" Niu Niu, the little chatterbox, went on.

Granny hesitated because she was tied up today.

"Liangchuan should go with you. I just can’t make it," Ms. Zhou sighed.

"No problem, no problem. Our invite was a bit too last-minute. So, Liangchuan, do you want to come with us to the village?" Su He asked, looking at Ji Liangchuan.

"Yes, Aunt Su! I wanna go!" Ji Liangchuan replied eagerly, clearly excited to go with them.

"Then go ahead and take Chuan with you. I'll pick him up tonight. If I can't make it, he can stay at your place overnight, and I'll come get him tomorrow morning," Ms. Zhou said with a smile, unable to resist her grandson's joy.

He really loves playing with these two little friends. Ji Liangchuan only shows his playful, childlike side around Zai Zai and Niu Niu.

"Don’t worry about it. I’ll bring him back tomorrow morning. The cake might not be ready until tonight, so let Liangchuan stay with us overnight. I’ll take him home tomorrow," Fu Tinghua, who had been silent until now, spoke up.

Hearing this, Ji Liangchuan turned to Fu Tinghua in pleasant surprise.

Zai Zai and Niu Niu’s dad is the coolest!

"Are you sure it’s not too much trouble?" Ms. Zhou asked apologetically.

"Oh, it’s no big deal! Our families are so close—you’re being too polite. Besides, the kids’ happiness is what matters most," Su He said with a laugh.
