    Chapter 5: Succubus

The ground trembled slightly, and through the mass of demons ahead, something seemed to be approaching.

"Ah, right," Aruda suddenly spoke up, "I recall your great-grandfather asked me to tell you that this academy is filled with offspring of high-ranking demons. You should seize the opportunity to win them over."

Wen Ying sighed helplessly, "Grandma, please don't put pressure on me. I'm just an impure Mirror Demon."

"No," Aruda's voice turned eerie as she whispered, "Human-Demon offspring. Born in the Demon Realm as a demon, born in the Human Realm as a human."

But I was born in the Human Realm yet am a demon, Wen Ying thought, as if he could hear the unspoken words in Aruda's sentence. His expression was a mix of emotions, "I'm just an ordinary nobody. It's better not to have any expectations for me."

Why do these elders always expect underachievers to get into top universities? What kind of thick filter do they wear?

As they spoke, the preparations were already complete. The source of the ground's tremor was a massive stone, moved by several demons working together.

For the umpteenth time, Wen Ying felt an ominous premonition. His voice quivered, "Grandma, wasn't the entrance exam supposed to be a written test?"

"Huh? Did I say that?" Aruda sounded puzzled, "There's no written test."

"The strength test is about to begin," the towering demon standing by the massive boulder announced through a megaphone. "We'll be distributing number plates. Once you have them, line up here for the first assessment."

Aruda explained, "The first test is strength, followed by speed, which seems to be a race. Lastly, there's an all-round assessment, and they'll also test our magical powers."

"How does this relate to the examinations in the Human Realm?"

Aruda pointed with his index finger. "For the final comprehensive test, His Majesty the Demon King drew inspiration from a popular activity in the Human Realm called 'Name-Tag Ripping'."

Wen Ying momentarily doubted if he had heard correctly. "Name-Tag Ripping?"

Aluda affirmed Wen Ying's statement, "Yes, His Majesty the Devil King said that this can comprehensively test a demon's strength, making it very suitable as an exam item."

Wen Ying mentally recalled a reality TV show about tearing off name tags, his face pale. He held two R-ranked Fireball cards in his hand; it would be best to hide them for the time being.

"Quick, go join the line," Aruda nudged Wen Ying gently.

Wen Ying strolled towards the end of the already formed line. He wondered how much nutrition the demons from the Demon Realm had consumed, as he couldn't spot a single male demon shorter than him.

The first and second matches posed no threat to life, but the third did. As Wen Ying queued up, he sized up the surrounding demons, hoping that during the second bout, a demon would display a speed-related ability for him to replicate.

He was being scrutinized by the other demons, who were also under his gaze.

Wen Ying was too conspicuous. As the only seemingly malnourished demon in a realm that valued strength, his appearance aroused contempt.

He overheard the whispers around him, or perhaps they didn't bother to lower their voices, assuming he couldn't hear them.

"Did you see that weakling up front? Haha, what a pipe dream."

"I bet I could knock him down with one punch."

Wen Ying: "..." He subtly turned his head to study the faces of those demons, silently noting them down in his mental notebook.

Occasional loud impacts came from the front of the line. As those behind craned their necks, Wen Ying, being of average height, couldn't see a thing. When it was finally his turn to move forward, he peered ahead and was stunned to see numerous marks on the massive stone - fingerprints, palm prints, and so on. A demon was currently leaping into the air, spinning several times to gather power.

It was the merman. After jumping halfway, he twisted his waist with great agility, then struck the giant boulder with his long, beautiful tail. The surface of the rock instantly caved in by at least the length of a palm.

    "Bravo!"

"As expected of Phileas! To leave such deep marks on that stone!"

Amidst the boisterous and enthusiastic young devils, Wen Ying stood out as an outlier, catching Phileas's attention when he proudly turned back.

That figure dressed entirely in white seemed out of place in the demonic realm, frail and delicate. However, he wore a calm expression and remained silent. Phileas frowned. Could it be that this seemingly low-ranking devil possessed some extraordinary ability, hence his casual demeanor?

    Wen Ying was simply dumbfounded.

    "Next."

With no one else in front of him, a devil responsible for keeping scores bellowed loudly.

Wen Ying swallowed hard, approaching with a sense of despair. Under Phlegethos's curious gaze, he struck the massive stone with a punch, yet it remained unscathed.

    The entire area fell silent.

Wen Ying caught a faint sound of mockery. He turned his head with displeasure, daring to be angry but not to speak. The one who had just laughed was Beros. His lips curled slightly, mocking him openly.

Phlegethos was astonished. How could there be such a weak demon?

There was an uproar from the crowd behind them.

"Is this guy here to be a comedian?"

"Did he not use his full strength? How can there be no mark on the heavy stone from a demon's blow?"

"It's possible. Look at his malnourished appearance; he must have come from some remote forest."

Wen Ying dug his toes into the ground. However, he hadn't used his full strength just now. The thought of smashing a rock with his hand made him wince, so he had instinctively held back.

Surprisingly, his hand wasn't as painful as expected. Wen Ying was about to ask the scoring demon if he could try again, but before he could speak, the demon immediately called for the next participant, probably assuming that no demon would restrain their strength in such a situation.

Wen Ying had no choice but to leave. Many demons around him looked at him curiously, intrigued by this incredibly weak demon. To be fair, he did have a rather pleasant appearance, albeit not typical of a demon's aura.

Feeling uncomfortable, Wen Ying quickly walked over to Aluda. Due to his poor health, he had often been absent from school and lacked face-to-face interactions with outsiders. Now, under the gaze of so many demons, he felt uneasy.

He missed his three-headed dog plushie, which always brought him a sense of security when hugged.

Aluda patted Wen Ying's head with a kindly expression. "Wen Ying, you've done well. Keep up the effort in the next test."

Wen Ying could only offer a polite smile, concealing his inner despair behind a thick filter of grandfatherly encouragement.

A great number of young demons took quite some time to complete the first test, prolonging the second one until the following day.

Wen Ying was occupied throughout the night, studying the incantations from the cheat sheet that Arudas had given him. Despite possessing ample magical power, he stumbled while reciting them, often losing his flow halfway through. The spells were rendered useless as a result.

At one point, Wen Ying contemplated using the teleportation scroll left by his great-grandfather to return to the human world.

The incantations were written in demonic script, which any demon with demonic blood could naturally understand.

Frustrated by his continued failure at casting the spells, Wen Ying turned to drawing cards. Surprisingly, his innate talent proved rather enjoyable, and he replicated a few more R-rated Fireball cards. Now, he possessed a total of six R-rated Fireball cards.

The next day, as Wen Ying gazed upon the track and field that Arudas had mentioned, he began to question his existence.

Due to the large number of participants, the school divided them into batches, each with a half-day time slot. Belonging to the second batch, Wen Ying was dumbfounded when the school staff finally led them to what they called the racetrack.

Arudas' words echoed in his mind before he had left, "Don't worry, the second test is also inspired by a human world activity, designed by His Majesty the Demon King. It's very popular over there, I think it's called 'Boys and Girls, Charge Forward'?"

    Boys and Girls, Charge Forward?

Wen Ying gazed at the turbulent river before him, flanked by steep cliffs and a forest veiled in mist ahead. He also spotted remnants that resembled blood stains everywhere, wondering if the Demon Lord had taken inspiration from some reality game show called "Boys and Girls Sprint Ahead."

Within the swirling waters, Wen Ying even spotted what seemed to be perilous crocodile-like beasts.

    "Plunk!"

While Wen Ying stood there, dumbfounded with a flock of grass mud horses racing through his mind, numerous demons had already plunged into the river at breakneck speed. Some chose to fly above it, leaving Wen Ying as the only one left at the starting point within mere seconds.

A demon in charge of explaining the rules looked at Wen Ying quizzically. "Aren't you going to start?"

Wen Ying nodded slowly and flapped his wings to set off.

He could no longer see the demons, for they had already ventured into the foggy region. Despite his strenuous efforts to flap his wings, the distance between them widened instead.

Eventually, Wen Ying leaned against the cliff wall, panting and questioning his existence. "What do demons feed on? Why can they fly so fast...?"

"A spell," a deep, magnetic voice suddenly sounded behind him, like a lover's whisper in his ear. Wen Ying turned around to find the pink-haired demon, sending shivers down his spine. The demon had somehow appeared without notice.

He was indeed very tall. From afar, he appeared delicate and frail, but up close, his physique was anything but scrawny.

Those pink eyes seemed to hold galaxies within, and Wen Ying got lost in them for a few seconds before he snapped back to reality, cautiously pulling away.

"Can't you hurry up a bit?"

Essence curved his pink irises, completely unruffled, as if he were on a leisurely trip. "Don't worry, as long as we arrive on time, this test is utterly uninteresting."

His voice carried a flirtatious tone, his affectionate gaze capable of misleading one's senses.

This was the true allure of a Demon Realm Incubus, several times more seductive than the Incubus illustrations in that demon summoning mobile game.

    An Incubus?

    An Incubus!

Wen Ying's eyes lit up. His fiery gaze made Essence pause, but this heat held no hint of lust. What did it mean?

"I mean, can you demonstrate your racial ability on me?" Wen Ying flew closer, rubbed his hands together, then took Essence's hand in both of his own, speaking earnestly. "I'm from a small countryside, and I've always heard how powerful Incubi are. Can I experience it up close?"

Essence, who had never heard such a request before: "..."

Essence wore a peculiar expression; other demons would flee at the mention of his innate ability, so was this white demon lacking in wits?

Wen Ying's eyelids twitched as he caught the meaning behind Essence's look. He didn't let go of Essence's hand, for in the face of life and death, such a misunderstanding mattered little. He continued with a deep tone, "My mind is fine, it's just that my curiosity is insatiable. My neighbors always say I'm overly curious."

Essence pondered for a moment, then pulled his hand back. His fingers, tipped with pink claws, gently traced Wen Ying's cheek from the corner of his eye to his chin, causing goosebumps to rise on Wen Ying's skin.

"Very well, country demon," Essence said, his gaze holding hidden meaning as he spoke the last four words.

"However, I don't like to use my innate ability on someone who currently piques my interest." With that, Essence suddenly chanted a spell, grabbed Wen Ying's hand, and flapped his wings, flying forward at an unbelievable speed.

Wen Ying quickly understood his intention.
