Chapter 301: A Wager
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 301: A Wager
Wen Ying adjusted his emotions, afraid that his tone would come out as boastful or taunting.
"Your Majesty the Demon King, good afternoon. It's been a while since we've spoken."
His words were as familiar as ever, as if he was still the original Mirror Demon. The Demon King's suppressed anger flared up again at this simple greeting. He held his phone tightly, concealing his irritation beneath a low, controlled voice. "Yes, it has been a long time."
"Do you have a new assignment for me?"
"Were you the one who killed the angel behind the Church?"
"Yes," Wen Ying didn't deny it. "I should be way ahead in my semester-end grades now, right?"
The Demon King was momentarily caught off guard by the sudden change in topic, but he quickly recalled what Wen Ying was referring to - the assessment task he had given. Wen Ying had indeed taken down the Church, putting him far ahead in the mission to eliminate the exorcist aiding the extremist faction in the Human Realm...
The Demon King felt a pang in his heart. He moved the phone away, took a deep breath, and then brought it back to his ear. "Are you still taking on new assignments?"
"Your Majesty, I'm not a pure angel. I have demonic blood," Wen Ying paused, his tone gentle and youthful, like an innocent and naive college student with clear eyes. "Besides, I still have a Demon King position waiting for me."
A fierce collision echoed from the phone, as if something had been instantly shattered.
The Demon King laughed in fury, "If that's the case, you'll have to make some contributions for the residents of the demon world. Since you can communicate with the Law, I hope you can persuade it to ease its suppression on our power."
"There is a way to achieve that."
The Demon King had only intended to give Wen Ying a hard time, not expecting him to say he had a solution without hesitation. He was genuinely surprised and asked suspiciously, "What way?"
Wen Ying replied, "As long as the demon world opens up to the human world, the Law should agree to weaken its suppression on the demons within the human realm."
A flash of astonishment crossed the Demon King's face, quickly replaced by a solemn expression as his eyes turned contemplative.
There was silence on the other end of the phone, but Wen Ying wasn't anxious. He waited patiently.
He had been expecting the Demon King's call, but hadn't expected the Demon King to be so patient, waiting until now to call him.
After much deliberation, mainly considering whether Wen Ying had set a trap for him, the Demon King, knowing that the mischievous youth would never let him off easily, tried to locate any potential pitfalls.
Only after a considerable amount of time did Wen Ying hear a soft "okay" from the other side.
Wen Ying pressed his advantage. "I also want a piece of land for an exchange zone."
"Very well," the Devil King's voice held a somber tone.
Wen Ying's smile widened, his tone filled with delight. "I'll attempt to communicate with the Law of Communication right away."
He wasn't worried that the Devil King would backtrack after the Law agreed. If the Devil King went back on his word, the Law could immediately restore the suppression to its original state.
As soon as the call ended, the Devil King promptly summoned the upper-rank Demon Clan Elders who were still in the capital for a meeting.
Wen Ying put down his phone, the curve of his lips softened slightly, yet he remained joyful. A serious glint of contemplation shimmered in his silver-gray eyes.
After reviewing his plan and ensuring there were no loopholes, Wen Ying focused his mind to communicate with the laws of nature.
It felt as if his soul had detached from his body, floating upward effortlessly, weightless. The surroundings transformed into a myriad of fragmented and bizarre lights, akin to viewing a neon-lit street from the night sky, a mesmerizing blur.
Laws had no physical form. Wen Ying attempted to "touch" the wandering clusters of transparent substances, hoping to convey his voice.
"Law... Mother?" Wen Ying paused for several seconds before appending the term, "I hope you understand..."
Wen Ying disclosed his pact with the Demon King to the Law, transmitting the information through the ethereal substance that wandered between heaven and earth, resembling billowy clouds gathering and dispersing leisurely.
Straining to convey his voice to the Law, he repeated himself countless times until his mental energy was drained. Suddenly, a genderless, ethereal voice invaded his mind:
"Permitted."
A simple response, yet it instantly lit up Wen Ying's face with joy.
Regardless of whether the Law could hear his thoughts, he continued to ramble on about his ideas and plans.
Why couldn't humans and demons coexist? The two realms could be seen as nations, with occasional frictions but no all-out wars.
Humans were currently in a weaker position, but their technological advancements far surpassed those of the demon realm. Even the Demon King dared not directly confront a nuclear bomb.
The human world had sparse demonic energy. If they could train in the demon realm, their strength would increase rapidly. Elders among exorcist masters, whose power was restricted by demonic energy, would also have the chance to advance further, strengthening the human realm.
Although demons in the demon realm were formidable, they faced reproductive issues, resulting in a stagnant population. Thus, demonic labor was incredibly expensive. With a vast human population, Wen Ying believed that with proper guidance and control, allowing humans to enter the demon realm and truly integrate into demon society, the demons would eventually become accustomed to the conveniences brought by humans.
Ultimately, creating hybrids would lead to a genuine fusion, and relations between the two worlds would likely become more harmonious.
Whatever he could envision, the Devil King could too. Each of them, with their differing perspectives, was betting on one of two possible futures: either a future where the Devil King's preference for demonic control over resources came to pass, or the future that Wen Ying hoped for, a world of integration.
