Chapter 211 – Snake Meat
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 211 - Snake Meat
Xiao Le had taken time off from his film set especially to savor the magical beast meat today. He eagerly stood in line at the Mu City Disaster Relief Department's cafeteria, his demon hunter intuition sensing that those in front of him who could see the food window were not particularly happy.
After observing for a while, he noticed that people's excitement dwindled as they reached the viewing spot. What kind of dish could make one feel it unappetizing just by looking at it? Xiao Le was puzzled, and a nagging premonition crept into his mind. He recalled the recent trending topic about the dark cuisine in some regions of the demon world.
It couldn't be that coincidental, could it? The cuisine from where the demonic mirror dwelled was one of those sanity-diminishing dishes?
With a heart full of trepidation, Xiao Le followed the queue, finally reaching a spot where he could glimpse inside the window. His fears were confirmed as he saw the darkness of the demonic mirror's home-cooked meal – it was indeed a sanity-draining delicacy.
For this meal, the cafeteria-goers were destined to eat with pained expressions, reluctantly consuming the nutrient-rich magical beast meat, experiencing both agony and pleasure.
Wen Ying had already served himself in the kitchen and carried his plate outside. He sat near the serving counter, observing the ashen faces of those in line, thoroughly enjoying his meal while witnessing their discomfort.
An Meng and a few others approached. Among them were the Mu City branch's department head, deputy head, and various department representatives, both locals and outsiders. The search for magical beasts had nearly concluded, so the search parties were dismissed, and patrolling units were assigned to keep watch. Now, they were scattered across the area on their missions.
During the morning until noon, the headquarters utilized various channels and connections to investigate the Mirror Demons. Each prominent family had some means of interacting with the Demon Realm. Combining the intelligence on a few Demon Realm demons engaging in transactions with them, the results relieved everyone.
The Demon Realm demons hadn't collectively become stronger, and the Mirror Demons still occupied the bottom rung of the social hierarchy in the Demon Realm. No, to be precise, although the Mirror Demons were currently at the lower end of the power spectrum, their status had risen. The magic cards they crafted were highly praised throughout the entire Demon Realm.
Among the Mirror Demons, there was now a very wealthy faction, and that was precisely the one Wen Jing belonged to.
Wen Jing himself, his feats in the Demon Realm made everyone's jaws drop.
Not long before he came to the Human Realm, this demon issued a challenge to all underage demons in the Demon Realm. In the end, not a single demon managed to defeat him within the stipulated time.
He was even the top student in overall performance in Class One of Lucifer Demon Academy!
The information they obtained wasn't detailed; it was merely a brief mention that sounded like a lie fabricated by the Mirror Demons due to its incredibility.
These events reshaped their understanding of the race. It was akin to an ordinary cat defeating a pack of tigers, lions, and leopards, or, more exaggeratedly, a hamster taking down a lion.
This information was known only to the higher-ups and hadn't been disseminated yet. They were currently in an internal meeting, deliberating whether to share this information with the students and regular teachers within the academy.
After all, disclosing such a matter would seem like a joke to most.
As a high-ranking teacher and member of the leadership at the Exorcist Academy, An Meng was aware of the situation, so his gaze on Wen Ying was filled with mixed emotions. Wen Ying felt as if he were being looked at like an animal in a zoo.
"We're here to thank you for helping us out yesterday," An Meng said, taking a seat across from Wen Ying. "We're currently investigating why the magical beast appeared yesterday. Do you have any information that could be of assistance? We need some guidance to confirm our investigation's direction."
Among the group surrounding An Meng, some knew, while others didn't, resulting in a variety of emotions directed at Wen Ying.
Demons were highly sensitive to human emotions, and one among them was radiating intense resentment, like a sizzling winter barbecue fueled by oil.
"It's quite evident that it was the Extremists," Wen Ying sighed, adopting an air of differentiation from them. "The giant snake you saw last night was a Two-Headed Magic Snake."
Someone recognized it and exclaimed, "The Two-Headed Magic Snake with spatial abilities?"
"That's right."
Some hesitated, wondering, If you fought it alone last night, is the Two-Headed Magic Snake that weak? Ancient records classify this magical beast as high-level. Even if it expended energy crossing the barrier and only had one head left, it shouldn't have been so easily decapitated, right?
Unaware of what some were thinking, Wen Ying continued, "From what I just learned, the Extremists lured the Two-Headed Magic Snake from the Realm of Demons to hunt in the Human Realm. Mu City has been invaded before, and its barrier is the weakest point in the Human Realm. The snake broke through from there."
"Thank you for providing this information," An Meng expressed genuine gratitude.
Wen Ying's phone rang.
"I'll take this call."
"Feng Luo teacher? What do you need at this time?"
An Meng and the other exorcists perked up their ears. This was related to the demon world, and they would eavesdrop attentively even if the conversation seemed mundane; there might be some useful information hidden within.
Being addressed as "teacher" by the demon in front of them, the caller on the other end had to be a demon instructor from the Lucifer Academy.
"Liu Qingtao has sent it over," Wen Ying said in delight. "Where did it arrive?"
"It's already on the island. Alright, I understand."
Feng Luo asked, "Why haven't you done what you promised me yet?"
Wen Ying was taken aback. A forgotten matter suddenly came back to him, and he held the phone close while whispering ingratiatingly, "Soon, very soon."
The additional condition Feng Luo had set for releasing Liu Qingtao was to "popularize" Lai Yehua's festival form magic cards in the human world.
Feng Luo finished his statement and changed the subject, "Oh, by the way, convey to the humans that there are now numerous small tears in the barrier. These tears lead to naturally formed spatial passages. Tell them to be cautious of monsters."
Wen Ying started, "Teacher Feng Luo, are you a bit late to…?"
"Fuh?!"
Wen Ying swallowed his initial words and rephrased, "I mean, you might have mentioned it sooner. Last night, many monsters appeared in the human city where I was, including a two-headed magic serpent that stretched both its heads over."
"It's not too late. The survey results came out this morning, and spontaneous spatial passages have increased across various locations today."
Wen Ying's expression turned grave. This news was truly distressing for him – being a double agent was no easy task.
After ending the call, Wen Ying relayed Feng Luo's message to those present in his own words.
Darkness seemed to settle over An Meng and the others' faces.
One person couldn't help but voice a complaint diplomatically, "Why hasn't the official organization from the Realm of Devils suppressed the extremist faction yet? It feels like they're gaining more momentum."
Wen Ying shared the same curiosity.
"This is quite a tricky situation. They're hidden among ordinary demons, making it difficult to completely root them out."
Someone murmured, "The grass will grow back with the spring breeze."
Wen Ying nodded. "That's right. We're doing our best."
It didn't sound very convincing.
An Meng thought that demons had their dirty secrets. On the surface, the higher-ranking races and the Great Prince of the Demon Realm were the leaders of these young devils. In reality, however, the one they had overlooked was the true leader.
When a demon teacher needed to make a call, they would contact a Mirror Devil.
Feng Luo had only called Wen Ying to urge him to speed up his work and asked him to pass on a message. He hadn't expected it to create the misunderstanding that Wen Ying was the concealed leader.
Upon learning that the barrier between the two realms was dissolving at an accelerated pace, Wen Ying was in a terrible mood. He forced a smile, pushing the tray of food slightly forward on the table. His tone was warm as he said, "Have you all eaten? It's hard to think deeply on an empty stomach. Let's have some food first."
The movement of Wen Ying pushing the tray and the sound it made drew everyone's attention to the platter of dishes. Unprepared, their faces paled from the shock.
"I've already eaten," An Meng replied with restrained calmness.
Wen Ying: "I added some unique seasonings from the Demon Realm – uh, should I say it's a family recipe? It enhances the absorption of magical energy from magic beast meat, increasing the conversion rate by fifty percent."
An Meng: "!"
Others: "!"
No wonder everyone around him was enduring the pain without stopping – it was for this reason.
Seeing the group suffer through their meal cheered Wen Ying up a bit. He requested the academy to arrange a helicopter to send him back.
It was still his mirror clone that returned, while the original Wen Ying remained in Mu City as a human.
Wen Xinxin accompanied him back. She had spent the previous night with her parents. When the magic beasts attacked, she used a low-level concealment spell to hide the life auras of the three of them, thus avoiding any encounters with the demon realm.
The helicopter arrived at the island where the Exorcist Academy was located in the evening.
Wen Ying had packed quite a bit of snake meat. Upon reaching the academy, he rushed straight to the kitchen to cook, with Lu Rongyu guiding the way.
Lu Rongyu watched in astonishment as the Demon of the Magic Mirror prepared a dish with snake meat that was visually appealing, aromatic, and tasted delightful. His eyes widened in shock.
The Demon of the Magic Mirror could apparently create normal-looking food, not just items that induced loss of sanity.
It dawned on Lu Rongyu that the demon had done this intentionally, relishing in their distress.
He appeared pure white from head to toe, but his heart was exceptionally black – truly demonic, as expected.
Wen Ying placed the freshly cooked snake meat dish into his spatial bracelet and asked the stunned Lu Rongyu, "Do you know where Bellerophon is?"
Lu Rongyu snapped back to reality and took out his phone. "Let me check."
After making the call, he said, "He returned last night and destroyed ten training rooms. He's now in the eleventh one."
Typical behavior for Bellerophon, Wen Ying commented. "I'm sorry about the damages. You can claim compensation from the Demon Realm's Court of Judgment."
"Losses aren't the main issue here," Lu Rongyu said tactfully. "The problem is that his actions caused quite a commotion, and his unchecked aura has frightened many junior students in the academy."
"I'll go take a look."
Wen Ying flew towards the training room; there was no need to search, for Beros' devastating aura, unleashed without restraint, could be sensed from afar.
Upon landing at the entrance of the training room, Wen Ying stepped inside, immediately greeted by an overwhelming blast of heat.
Unrestrained black flames wreaked havoc on everything around them, turning the area pitch black. The flames soared up to the ceiling, engulfing the space in a fiery inferno. Amidst the black sea of flames, a fierce demon with unchecked rage pounded the training dummy, sending it crashing into the wall, leaving deep, web-like cracks.
"Beros?" Wen Ying ventured forward, stepping into the fiery abyss.
The scorching flames parted, respectfully avoiding his silver tresses that danced in the heat waves.
Boros seemed to ignore Wen Ying, venting his emotions on the training equipment with a series of powerful thuds that echoed relentlessly.
Wen Ying racked his brains, trying to figure out how to appease a hellhound boyfriend like this. It was his first time in a relationship, and he had forgotten to search for advice on Baidu when he entered just now.
Now, he could only rely on his memory of how pet owners in short videos he had watched before had calmed down their angry dogs.
