Chapter 15
byChapter 15
Lin Nannan Standing Up for Her Own
“That was just the only option left. With Lu Hang being like that, only a fool wouldn’t realize how hard life would be. Any halfway decent person wouldn’t marry him.” He Ye couldn’t help but feel relieved when she recalled how the Lu family had turned down a marriage alliance with her family. Otherwise, it would be her daughter suffering now.
After all, her family didn’t have a daughter to exchange in marriage.
“Honestly, the Lu family is pretty shameless. They knew Lu Hang was paralyzed, with no telling how long he’d live, yet they still let him marry—aren’t they just ruining that fool’s life?” She spoke without restraint, her eyes full of glee at others' misfortune.
The village busybodies were all huddled together gossiping. Some said Lin Nannan was lucky to be taken care of by the Lu family, while others accused the Lus of being heartless for tricking her. Nobody thought it would work out.
After all, one was a fool, the other paralyzed—a match made in heaven, both incapable of taking care of themselves.
When folks get worked up, they lose all sense, saying whatever comes to mind. He Ye was in such a state now. She tugged at another equally gossipy village woman and said loud enough for all to hear, “You say they’re shameless, but I think Lu Hang must’ve done something wrong. Otherwise, why would he come crawling back so pitifully? I heard it was the village head and the Lu family who went to fetch him… They claim he got injured on a mission, but look—how long has he been back? Has anyone come to visit?”
The gossiping women exchanged glances, as if they’d stumbled upon some great secret, their eyes gleaming.
“Are you saying there’s something fishy going on?”
“Who knows? Maybe he really did something disgraceful and had to come crawling back!” He Ye grew more animated, her voice rising. “Remember that guy from the neighboring village who retired with honors? There was a big to-do, and he got plenty of rewards. But look at Lu Hang—not so much as a peep from the Lu family. Doesn’t that just reek of guilt?”
“That’s bullshit!” Lu Yuan was shaking mad, unable to hold back her furious retort.
The village women, caught gossiping behind someone’s back, looked embarrassed when they saw it was Lu Yuan.
Only He Ye showed no remorse. Instead, seeing it was Lu Yuan and Lin Nannan, she sneered mockingly, “Then explain this—if your brother was so badly injured, why hasn’t there been a single word about it?”
Lu Yuan didn't know anything about these so-called secrets, but she believed in her brother. Her eyes welled up with angry tears.
“Sis-in-law, don’t hold me back—I’ll fight her!” She realized she was being pulled backward and saw it was Lin Nannan restraining her.
“What's there to fight about? If there’s any question about his service record, we can just ask and find out,” Lin Nannan said, tugging at her.
Lu Yuan froze. “Ask? Ask who?”
The others were curious too.
Lin Nannan raised an eyebrow, looking around at everyone before smiling faintly. “Ask the army. If your brother really did something disgraceful, and the army still let him come back, wouldn’t that mean they’re covering for him? How could we allow that? Even if he’s my husband, I’d have to report it—can’t have the village living in fear…”
After speaking, she noticed the gossips’ expressions change, and her smile deepened. “On the other hand, if someone’s spreading rumors and ruining your brother’s reputation, they must have some grudge against the army, right?”
Since Lu Hang had been a soldier, Lu Yuan knew a bit more about these matters. Hearing Lin Nannan’s words, her eyes lit up—this was far better than a fistfight. She immediately agreed, “Hurry, Sis-in-law, let’s go! The village head must know where my brother’s unit is. We’ll go ask and clear this up!”
