Chapter 172
by 夏至三候Chapter 172
Standing on Your Own Two Feet
Lin Nannan stayed remarkably calm. After all, the high-yield seeds were just too tempting to people these days.
"This is only the beginning!" she said after a moment's thought. "A Yuan, let me teach you how to handle a gun!"
The village wasn’t safe anymore.
They might not come at them directly, but Lu Yuan and Lu Ming would be the first targets.
She worried if something went wrong, there’d be no time for regret.
Now, not only was someone targeting Lu Hang, others had their eyes on her seeds too.
With so many loose tongues in the village, word about her seeds would get out—it couldn't stay hidden.
Those who hadn’t seen them before might not believe it at first, but after hearing enough rumors—and especially with Mr. Hu and others arriving and staying—people would start piecing things together. Once they did, anyone wanting those seeds would try anything.
Lu Yuan, old enough to marry but still single, was naturally the first target.
If Zhang Hongyue hadn’t slipped up and revealed everything, they’d have assumed it was just jealousy from villagers. But now, the truth was clear.
Lu Yuan was stunned. "Sister-in-law, is... is this really okay?"
"It is!"
If not, we’ll make it okay.
She knew Lu Hang would feel the same when he came back.
If there were no options, then there was nothing to do. But since she had the means, she'd show Lu Yuan how to defend herself—give her a way to survive.
As the two women talked, Zhang Hongyue was beaten to a pulp.
Jiang Damai was furious and heartbroken—she wasn’t pulling her punches.
Zhang Hongyue, once pretty, was now a pitiful sight.
Lu Ding didn’t stop her. He was sick at heart himself and understood Jiang Damai’s rage.
Only after the beating had gone on long enough did he finally speak. "Enough. Let’s go get the cops to haul her in!"
In the end, Lu Ding and some villagers took Zhang Hongyue away, while Jiang Damai sat in the dirt, howling her lungs out…
She must’ve truly felt wronged—crying like the world had ended.
Lin Nannan and Lu Yuan just stood there, not an ounce of pity. If anything, they believed she made her bed—now she could lie in it.
"Let’s go," Lin Nannan said, enjoying every second of it as she patted Lu Yuan’s arm.
All Lu Yuan’s anger melted away as she sighed happily. "Sister-in-law, thanks to you—I wouldn’t have been able to fight back before. I’d still be taking their crap."
"Then don’t let anyone push you around!" Lin Nannan gave her cheek a playful pinch and said seriously, "Only when you’re strong and capable can you protect yourself and keep people from walking all over you!"
Lu Yuan nodded, thoughtful. "I never dealt with anything like this before. But after what happened to my brother, crazy shit kept coming our way... Even though he’s better now, I wised up. You're right—relying on others isn’t the answer. Even if my brother wants to protect me every second, he can’t always be there. Only by becoming strong myself can I truly stay safe and stop worrying everyone."
"What are you talking about? Of course family worries about you—that’s normal. The most important thing is protecting yourself. Got it?" Lin Nannan corrected gently.
"Got it!" Realizing she messed up, Lu Yuan stuck out her tongue and turned on the charm with her sister-in-law.
The two women walked off, completely at ease. But the whole village was buzzing. With Zhang Hongyue hauled away and Jiang Damai sobbing uncontrollably, nobody could ignore what had happened.
It was a touchy situation, so everyone speculated about who was behind Zhang Hongyue’s actions, paying little attention to Lu Yuan or Lin Nannan’s role in the fight.
The two were off the hook. When they got home, they cheerfully recounted the fallout between Jiang Damai and her daughter to the Lu family, leaving everyone feeling like justice had been served.
