    Chapter 214

    Pushed to the Limit

Lin Nannan pointed at the tree behind her and whined, "I climbed up there, but I didn’t expect so many bugs hiding inside..."

An old untended tree with bugs—isn’t that normal?

Seeing his wife about to explode, Lu Hang feared that asking such a question might earn him a scolding right then and there.

"Let me brush them off for you. Your back is covered!" He walked over to Lin Nannan and noticed the fragment at her feet, suddenly understanding why she had climbed up in the first place.

With Lu Hang’s help, Lin Nannan finally managed to rid herself of most of the bugs. Staring at the stains all over her clothes, she was on the verge of tears.

"It’s fine. Just go back, wash up, and change your clothes," Lu Hang said, trying not to laugh at her pouting.

Lin Nannan couldn’t stand it for another second. "Go, go, GO!" she urged.

"What about the fragment on the ground? Not taking it?" he asked.

Glaring at the thing that had caused her so much trouble, Lin Nannan couldn’t bring herself to kick it. Stamping her foot impatiently, she said, "Bring it!"

Her frantic impatience made Lu Hang want to laugh, but he barely held it in.

The fragment Lin Nannan had retrieved from the tree was rather large, and its color seemed slightly different from the ones they had found earlier.

Knowing his wife was in no mood for questions, Lu Hang didn’t dare ask. He simply carried the fragment and followed behind her, reminding her to be careful.

By the time they returned to the campsite, only two people were left guarding it while the rest had scattered to continue searching.

The guards immediately stood up upon seeing them return, but Lu Hang waved them off. He escorted Lin Nannan to the path and said, "Take this back first. I’ll stay here and wait for the others to arrive before heading back."

Lin Nannan nodded. Knowing the area was safe, she wasn’t worried at all. Right now, all she wanted was to rush home, wash her hair, take a bath, and change her clothes. Another minute in this state would make her lose it.

She felt itchy all over and had reached her breaking point.

Carrying the fragment without effort, Lin Nannan marched off, leaving Lu Hang oddly abandoned.

    ---

Upon arriving home, Lin Nannan’s bug-covered, disheveled appearance shocked the Lu family, who immediately asked what had happened.

After giving a brief explanation and after they stopped questioning her, she tossed the fragment into the backyard for A Da and the others to keep an eye on. Then, she fetched water, boiled it, and proceeded to wash her hair, bathe, and clean her clothes. Only after finishing did she finally let out a long breath, feeling completely refreshed.

Earlier, she had nearly lost it.

After washing her clothes, she dried her hair with a towel and listened to the family’s chatter. She learned that her mother-in-law’s pastry business was taking off—people even placed orders for weddings, praising them as cheaper, tastier, and more auspicious than those from the state-run stores. The demand had grown so much that they were swamped with orders.

Before, with Lin Nannan around, things had been manageable. But now, with her absent and Lu Yuan practically living in the fields, the stall was left to the Lu sisters-in-law and Grandma Lu. They were drowning in work, barely able to keep up, especially after receiving yet another order today. They were discussing how to pull it off without delaying the customer’s big day.

"That’s nothing. A Yuan and I will help you!" Lin Nannan immediately offered.

With so many people searching the mountains, anything found wouldn’t stay hidden for long. She had no intention of going back up there.

As for what might be discovered in the mountains, Lu Hang would fill her in later. She wasn’t worried at all. Instead, she planned to rest at home, with absolutely no desire to return to the mountains and get eaten alive by bugs again.

An experience like that—once was enough to last a lifetime.
