Chapter 305
by 夏至三候Chapter 305
Outrageous
Only by keeping her by their side could they know her whereabouts and ensure her safety, rather than making blind guesses like we are now.
Others might obediently cooperate, but Nan Nan would never comply!
Lu Hang fell silent. Before this situation arose, they had all been preoccupied with arranging what they thought was best for her, without ever asking her opinion.
Now, their well-intentioned arrangements no longer seemed safe, and they couldn't help but regret it.
"She knew how to protect herself when she left!" he finally uttered, trying to reassure Lin Kangnian. "At a time like this, we can't afford to panic. I believe in Nan Nan's abilities—she'll be fine!"
The Zheng family's big commotion was nothing more than a diversion, distracting everyone with innocent casualties while they committed every imaginable atrocity.
To ensure their own escape, they wouldn’t hesitate to harm the innocent—that was just how ruthless the Zhengs were.
Lin Kangnian sighed and let the matter rest, fearing his unsettled emotions might affect Lu Hang as well.
"If we can’t capture them, we’ll make sure they never leave this place. They must not cross the border!" Lu Hang proposed.
They were of one mind on this, and Lin Kangnian only supported it.
"When they were in the capital, given their past conduct, every family treated them with respect. Who could’ve imagined things would turn out like this?" Lin Kangnian mused, couldn't fathom the Zhengs' decisions.
Wasn’t it better to be openly revered? Why resort to such deeds?
"Bottomless greed," Lu Hang remarked without surprise.
The Zheng family likely intended to throw money at gaining influence but overstepped, turning their initial petty schemes into outright ambition. One misstep led to another, culminating in this mess.
Lin Kangnian sighed again, not wanting to harp on it.
"Who knows when they’ll make their move?" he murmured.
"Soon," Lu Hang asserted confidently.
Lin Kangnian looked at him curiously. "How do you figure?"
Could such actions really be predicted?
"The chaos in Nan City gives them cover—it’s deliberate. Now that the entire city is in turmoil, it’s the perfect opportunity for them to act," Lu Hang analyzed. "They’ll seize this moment to flee with their families. Otherwise, if caught at night, they're done for."
Lin Kangnian’s spirits lifted. "If the Zheng family knew their carefully orchestrated chaos failed to deceive us, they’d be furious."
"You can tell them when we catch them—let them die knowing their efforts were in vain," Lu Hang said eagerly.
This back-and-forth eased the tension a bit.
The two men readied themselves, poised to catch the Zhengs like fish in a net.
...
Lin Nannan led Yu Jiadong and the others through the night, dodging gang after gang before finally reaching their destination.
It was the exact spot where Liu Jinzhi had captured and tried to kill her.
Matter-of-factly explaining the situation, she warned the group, "Be careful," she added. "I don’t know if there’s an ambush inside!"
"I'll go in first and take a look!" Yu Jiadong said calmly.
"Watch your step!" Lin Nannan didn't stop him because she couldn't enter herself.
If she had suggested going in to scout, everyone, including Yu Jiadong, would have objected. So she let Yu Jiadong take the lead...
Yu Jiadong carefully checked inside and found it completely empty. Baffled, he asked Lin Nannan, "There's no one here, and the place looks quite desolate. What’s the point of coming here?"
"For the good stuff, obviously!" Once she was sure it was safe, Lin Nannan instructed Yu Jiadong to secure the perimeter before explaining, "This used to be a Zheng family facility for processing gunpowder. After we discovered it, the Zhengs cut ties to avoid raising eyebrows and abandoned the place entirely."
"If it's already abandoned, can the stuff inside still be used?" Yu Jiadong asked skeptically.
Lin Nannan reassured him, "It’ll work—trust me."
Yu Jiadong remained doubtful, thinking Lin Nannan was being overly optimistic. Who’d just leave useful gear lying around?
But when they found the spot and saw everything they needed still there, Lin Nannan smiled and explained, "These things were left here because Zheng Jie figured they’d stick around, so the supplies would remain theirs. As for Commander Zhang’s side, it was because of me—keeping them here meant I could whip up more gear..."
Zhang Shengguo had initially wanted to take everything away, but Liu Jinzhi argued that with the entire Nan City in chaos, moving the supplies would be like handing ammo to the enemy. So they decided to wait until things settled down, leaving everything untouched.
Now, Lin Nannan was putting it all to work.
At first, Yu Jiadong didn’t understand what Lin Nannan intended to do. But when he saw her retrieve the hidden supplies from Zhang Shengguo’s side and start working, his pulse spiked.
Suddenly, he realized why the higher-ups valued Lin Nannan so much.
Before, he hadn’t seen anything particularly special about her. Even as a military wife, it didn’t seem necessary to go to such lengths. Compared to other women, Lin Nannan was certainly sharp and quick on her feet, but he hadn’t understood why so many people were sent to Nan City to protect her—especially when he learned that Lin Kangnian and others had come specifically for her. It’d seemed over the top.
But now, watching her craft neat little rounds with precision, he realized he had underestimated her.
These items were compact and delicate. Had he not seen her make them himself, he would have mistaken them for decorative trinkets—just shinier.
Yet when he saw what was packed inside, his throat went dry, realizing how wrong he had been about Lin Nannan.
"You’re going overboard, aren’t you?" Seeing her work without pause, Yu Jiadong felt the quantity was already excessive and couldn’t help but caution her.
"Not enough," Lin Nannan replied indifferently.
"How much more do you need?" he asked uncertainly.
"The more, the better."
The vague answer left Yu Jiadong at a loss for words.
The concept of "the more, the better" only became clear when Lin Nannan utilized every available resource—not only making explosives but even modifying their firearms. By then, he was totally shell-shocked.
After testing the modified gun’s power, his jaw dropped. He couldn’t process it.
You didn’t need to be an expert to understand Lin Nannan’s importance. So he immediately said, "Lin Nannan, our mission is to get you out alive!"
He knew she was cooking up something huge, but he couldn’t stop her—he’d never raise a hand to her.
"This spot’s as safe as it gets," Lin Nannan said seriously. "Nobody’s more careful than me."
