Chapter 112
by 夏至三候Chapter 112
Dream Cut Short
"I just want to farm!" After Lin Nannan declared her stance, she spotted the crops on the stalks that had already begun to form ears during the few days she was away. Her eyes instantly lit up with joy. She walked ahead of Lu Hang, leaned down to meet his gaze, and said, "See? Isn’t this worth being proud of?"
Lu Hang tilted his head slightly to gaze at her, captivated by the dazzling, shimmering light in her eyes. Unable to resist, he reached out to touch her eyelids and murmured, "These crops are your pride, and you are mine, Nan Nan. If you don’t want to go to the city, we’ll stay in the village. We’ll make sure the whole village—even the whole country—plants the crops we grow."
The tingling sensation on her eyelids made Lin Nannan squirm slightly. She grabbed his hand and pressed it firmly against her closed eyes, muttering, "You think farming’s that easy? Without good seeds and good land, it’s all pointless."
Lu Hang let her hold his hand and chuckled softly. "But we have you. Whatever you need, just tell me. I’ll do everything in my power to get it for you."
Hearing this, Lin Nannan brightened. She released his hand, her eyes burning with enthusiasm. "I want all kinds of seeds—all of them!"
"There are so many seeds. Can you even manage to plant them all?" Lu Hang asked, amused.
"Don’t worry about that. Just get them for me. I heard from the village chief that we’re allowed to clear new land here. It takes effort and some money, but it’s much cheaper. I’m strong—I’ll clear as much as I can and plant as much as possible!" she said excitedly.
Seeing her enthusiasm, Lu Hang couldn’t bear to dampen her spirits, but to avoid crushing her hopes later, he gently reminded her, "If you dare to clear new land, Grandma will be the first to break your legs."
"Ah? Why?" Lin Nannan asked, startled.
"Even if you’re strong, it’s too backbreaking. Grandma would never allow it!" After a pause, he added, "If your research methods really can improve yields, we’ll hand over all the family’s land to you. Mom and Dad can help too. How about that?"
The main thing was—she couldn’t expect to achieve everything at once.
Lin Nannan felt this was too slow, but she knew Lu Hang was right. Grandma Lu would never let the younger generation suffer. And just like that, her dream was crushed.
"By the way," Lu Hang said seriously, noticing the stark difference between the two fields, "I originally planned to wait until after the harvest to talk to Commander Zhang. But after the attack at the train station, I was afraid those people might target the village and discover these unusual crops—either stealing or destroying them. So I spoke to Commander Zhang earlier. He’ll probably send someone over in the next few days..."
Having already accepted the situation, Lin Nannan replied calmly, "Let them come. As long as they don’t damage the crops, they can study them all they want."
Relieved she wasn’t upset, Lu Hang exhaled. "The people Commander Zhang knows might have some of each kind. You could call him and ask if they can bring a little of each type for you to study."
But what could Lin Nannan really research? The seeds before her were the result of a monumental effort to preserve them—a testament to countless hours of work.
If she had the right tools, she could experiment. But now, with no tools at hand, how could she conduct any research?
She recalled how, while studying farming methods, she had read about hybrid rice—a way to end hunger completely. Maybe she could try it herself...
Perhaps... She looked down at Lu Hang, thinking that if she hadn’t rescued him, the seeds could have remained in the Healing Solution. In time, they would’ve transformed—higher yields were certain.
