Chapter 71
by 夏至三候Chapter 71
Lu Hang Goes Out
Lin Nannan knew this was the best solution and could deter petty mischief-makers, so she let them discuss it.
As for Lu Hang, he grew curious about what Lin Nannan was growing, especially since every single one was astonishing. He wondered what kind of seeds she’d used to cause such a reaction.
So, that morning, after breakfast when everyone was about to leave, he spoke up, "Dad, push me to the fields to take a look!"
This was the first time since his injury that Lu Hang had actively asked to go outside, taking everyone by surprise.
"To the fields?" Lu Fang was a little uncertain.
"Yeah," Lu Hang replied softly, "I want to see for myself."
If not for worrying about alarming the villagers by moving the wheelchair himself, he would have gone straight there.
"If our son wants to go, hurry up and push him!" Zhang Xiaofeng urged immediately, relieved that her son remained resilient after such a major incident. Instead of crumbling into despair, he even took the initiative to go out. She fully supported him.
In the past, some families had given up entirely after tragedies. She had been terrified of that, unable to sleep at night, dreading the horror of a parent burying their child. She put on a brave face, afraid that her son might feel guilty and suffer more.
Now, seeing him take the initiative, she saw a light at the end of the tunnel. If the young couple got along well and gave her a grandchild, it’d be a dream come true.
Lu Hang had no idea that his simple request had sparked so many thoughts in his mother. As he was wheeled outside, his emotions were anything but calm.
When he was first carried back, he had thought he would spend the rest of his life bedridden, wasting away in bed until death.
But this marriage of chance had not only given him hope but also contentment, making him feel that this life was enough.
...
Some villagers knew Lu Hang was now in a wheelchair, but those who hadn’t seen it firsthand couldn’t quite picture it. Now, witnessing it, they were full of curiosity—some inspecting, others expressing concern. At least no one dared to openly provoke him, knowing Lu Hang wasn’t to be trifled with, and Lin Nannan even less so.
Some guilty villagers realized with dread that the two most feared figures in the village had unknowingly been paired together. Who the hell had come up with this idea? Was it meant to be their doom?
"Um…" Amid the lively chatter, a gaunt woman with a perpetual frown squeezed forward. Her eyes lit up at the sight of Lu Hang’s wheelchair, and she immediately turned to Zhang Xiaofeng. "Xiaofeng, your A Hang’s wheelchair looks great! Can you get one for my A Zhi too?"
The cheerful atmosphere instantly shifted. Everyone turned to Zhang Xiaofeng, waiting for her response…
Zhang Xiaofeng had anticipated this, but she never expected that of all people, Lu Caimei would be the one to ask. Someone with whom their family had a strained relationship.
Lu Caimei had a son whose leg was broken, leaving him bedridden and in need of constant care. As her only child, she coddled him like gold, believing him flawless while resenting Lu Hang. She had kicked him while he was down with vicious remarks countless times, which Zhang Xiaofeng had brushed off. After Lu Hang’s accident, Lu Caimei had gloated cruelly. At the time, Zhang Xiaofeng had been too worried about her son’s mental state to retaliate, but she held onto that grudge.
Now, seeing this woman shamelessly ask for a wheelchair, she could only laugh at the audacity.
