Chapter 336
by 夏至三候Chapter 336
A Bit Improper
However, no matter how many people wished for Lu Hang and Lin Nannan to quarrel, they never witnessed any arguments between the couple.
On the contrary, Lin Nannan, who used to eat all three meals at the canteen, stopped going there after Lu Hang returned.
Before Lin Nannan arrived, Lu Hang was busy, and cooking for one was too much trouble, so he mostly ate at the canteen. Now that Lin Nannan was here, though they were missing many household basics and cooking was inconvenient, they borrowed a wok from the canteen to stir-fry rabbit meat and stew chicken soup. They then grabbed two servings of rice and ate at home.
The mouthwatering aroma of the stir-fried meat and chicken soup made mouths water along the way. When they reached the military housing area, many children drooled at the smell, but Lu Hang didn’t give in. He couldn’t favor one family over others—it would cause trouble. Besides, the food was hunted by his wife, so of course, she got first dibs.
As he carried the food past, the children in the compound wailed and threw tantrums, begging for meat. But not everyone could get meat. Even if their fathers were capable, hunting wasn’t something they could do freely—the military had strict rules about that.
For military wives, however, the rules were less strict. As long as the food was obtained by the wives, it didn’t need to be handed over, giving Lin Nannan another way to get food.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Nannan took the food from him, hearing the commotion downstairs, and asked in confusion.
“They’re crying for meat,” Lu Hang replied bluntly.
The rich scent of chicken soup filled the room, making Lin Nannan feel this seemed a bit improper.
“Isn’t this a bit too conspicuous?” she asked worriedly.
“No. We got this fair and square—no need to fear gossip,” Lu Hang reassured her. “Eat up before it gets cold!”
At the sight of the savory chicken soup, Lin Nannan stopped worrying.
As they ate, they chatted.
“I’ll take the day off tomorrow, and we’ll go buy some things,” Lu Hang said, glancing around and noticing how much was missing. He didn’t want his wife to make do with less.
Lin Nannan bit her chopsticks and asked, “Can I come too?”
“Of course. We even need to buy two woks—one won’t be enough for cooking.”
“Great! Tomorrow, then!”
While the two enjoyed their meal, rumors were spreading outside.
The troops discussed how Lin Nannan had proved them wrong earlier, while the families in the residential compound gossiped about how Lu Hang, instead of restricting his wife, had even stewed chicken soup. The couple seemed to live extravagantly, as if they didn’t care about tomorrow, giving people more to gossip about.
When the men returned from work, exhausted, only to hear their wives nagging and their children crying for meat, the more reasonable ones found it ridiculous.
“That couple earned their own food—why should they skimp?”
“Who else should Commander Lu treat well if not his wife? Remember, he was severely injured and paralyzed before, and she married him without hesitation. If he dared treat her poorly, even his parents wouldn’t let him off!”
“So stop meddling in their lives. Don’t think you’re the only smart ones—they know exactly what’s going on. They just choose to ignore it.”
The men, fearing unnecessary trouble, tried to reason with their wives. Some listened and suppressed their discontent for their husbands’ sake. Others, however, ignored the advice, hoping that if Lu Hang’s reputation suffered, their own husbands might rise in rank. So they gossiped even more fiercely.
Neither Lin Nannan nor Lu Hang cared for drama. They ignored the idle chatter unless it was shoved in their faces—responding would only make them seem petty. Instead, they focused on building their home, rising early and returning late, tuning out all the gossip.
