Chapter 470
by 夏至三候Chapter 470
A starved camel is still larger than a horse.
This was the question on everyone’s mind, but being in a passive state was frustrating.
Lin Nannan could accept that Du Du was a target—after all, Du Du rarely went out, and with Zheng Min around, the risk was lower. But when they set their sights on Lin Youyou, she was furious.
Targeting children to settle adult grudges was vile and inexcusable.
Though everyone in the family knew they were being watched and were in danger, the fact that these people lurked in the shadows made it nearly impossible to find them in the sprawling city of Beijing. They were forced into passivity, as if bracing for an attack, which grated on her nerves.
Lin Nannan didn’t know much about the Lin family, so she couldn’t understand why they were being targeted.
The unresolved situation had also disrupted her plans, leaving her torn between leaving and staying.
If she left, there was a danger of an ambush, especially since they were eyeing Du Du.
Staying meant an open-ended limbo. What if Zhang Ling was never caught? Would she have to live here forever?
So, after all the Lin men had gathered, she avoided the women of the household and cornered them in the study for answers.
Lin Kangsheng had rushed back once he confirmed at the hospital that his father-in-law was out of danger and making arrangements.
He hadn’t even soothed his daughter yet before being dragged into the study.
Seeing Lin Nannan’s serious expression, he glanced at his eldest brother in confusion, hoping for an explanation, but received only a shake of the head, only adding to his confusion.
"Even the children are being targeted, which shows they’ll stop at nothing—they’ll use any means necessary. We’re all in danger, and this can’t go on. Do you have any leads on who’s behind this?" Lin Nannan asked bluntly after studying them.
The men in the study exchanged glances, frowning in silent frustration.
Lin Nannan had expected as much but still took a deep breath to keep herself from losing her temper before getting any answers.
"Fine. Then tell me—what does the Lin family have that’s worth coveting so desperately?" She began retracing everything, following her own line of questioning to see if she could break the deadlock.
Her intensity made the Lin men sit up straighter, seriously considering her question.
They weren’t afraid of her, but desired to avoid upsetting her.
"I don’t think there’s anything in the house worth their attention. It must be old grudges..." Lin Zhaoyou mused aloud.
Lin Nannan raised an eyebrow. "Old grudges? Care to elaborate?"
"There’s nothing to hide," the old man sighed. "Back then, the family was involved in both legal and underground dealings, but we never did anything truly evil—just turned a profit..."
Lin Nannan understood—the Lin family had once operated in both worlds but withdrew when they sensed trouble. Still, they left behind plenty. Even though they donated much during the hardest times, even a diminished Lin family was a prize, making them a target.
"Wait," Lin Nannan nearly accepted the explanation but suddenly frowned. "If everything worth donating was given away, what’s left to covet? Unless... we crossed someone powerful back then, pushing them to retaliate ruthlessly!"
