Chapter 312
by 夏至三候Chapter 312
The Lifesaver
A vein pulsed in anger on Zheng Jie's forehead. He longed to shoot the person before him, but making a scene now would only make things worse. Clenching his fists, he suppressed the urge.
"Take the men and search. Turn the entire Nan City upside down if you must—find her! This woman is our ticket to survival. If we capture her, not just Lu Hang, but Lin Kangnian and everyone else will do anything to protect her. They won't let anything happen to her. That makes her our lifesaver. No matter what it takes, find her!" His command carried an unprecedented intensity.
The group in the room stared at him in stunned silence, finding it hard to believe their ears.
What's so special about some woman that she could be more important than their entire Zheng family?
If they escaped, they'd come after them—even outside Nan City, they had the means. They knew it, and so did Lu Hang and his allies. They knew what was at stake, and the choice was obvious.
Compared to that, Zheng Jie’s orders seemed absurd.
"Go now!" Seeing their hesitation, Zheng Jie barked impatiently.
Apart from the Zheng family members waiting to leave, the rest in the room dispersed, scrambling to carry out his orders.
Zheng Jun’s wife, her face drawn from exhaustion, held her little girl close and whispered timidly, "A-Jie, your elder brother and the others…"
Though she already knew the answer, she still wanted to ask, to hear it confirmed.
Zheng Jie took a deep breath, closed his eyes briefly, then opened them and said quietly, "If they had made it out safely, the messenger would have returned long ago. No one came back. No news. They're probably done for."
The woman, who had been holding herself together, sank to the floor, her legs giving way under the weight of grief.
"Mother!" her daughter cried out, her voice trembling with tears.
The crying just grated on Zheng Jie's nerves. Suppressing his temper, he ordered someone to take them away to rest.
Unless they were absolutely certain of their safety, they couldn’t leave.
---
Lin Nannan, who had spent the night sleepless and unaware that Zheng Jie’s target was her, remained at the makeshift bomb-making spot, tinkering with the seized materials.
The others could only watch—no one could help.
Just as the sun rose and everyone began to feel a sense of security, someone came rushing in, urgency in his voice. "Something’s wrong—people are asking about the woman who led the rescue last night. They're onto us!"
Exchanging glances, the group immediately interrupted Lin Nannan’s work, telling her to get out now.
Realizing the situation, Lin Nannan said quickly, "Zheng Jun and the others must have failed to escape. Zheng Jie's desperate—he wants to capture me to threaten Lu Hang and the rest!"
"So we need to go, now! Before it’s too late!" Yu Jiadong urged.
This place was desolate. Once discovered, they’d be easy targets and would be surrounded in no time.
Understanding the urgency, Lin Nannan nodded. "Gather these supplies and let’s head back to our previous hiding place."
Either they'd already checked that place or assumed they wouldn’t return. For now, it was the safest spot to catch their breath and figure things out.
Yu Jiadong and the others didn’t object. They knew attempting to flee Nan City now would be like walking right into their hands.
If the enemy was searching, they’d surely have the bus stations and train depots watched.
The group swiftly packed their belongings, loaded up the gear, and hurried out.
Half an hour after their departure, a dozen men arrived at the workshop. After inspecting the site, they realized Lin Nannan and her group had been hiding there all along. Swearing quietly, the searchers kept searching.
