Lin Nannan hadn’t thought much of it at first, but the contrast between her daughter’s enthusiastic cheers and the others’ awkward expressions made her feel as though she had come to pick a fight.

"I’m just strong—there’s no need to look at me like that!" she reiterated with a laugh, bringing everyone back to their senses.

Jiang Wen, seeing how uncomfortable they were, laughed and teased, "Haven’t you all heard about Comrade Lin’s strength? Why are you standing there looking dumb? Hurry up and keep up—are you trying to slack off?"

The man next to him couldn’t help but retort, "Of course we know, but we never expected Comrade Lin to be so impressive at plowing the fields."

The stream of praises left Lin Nannan equal parts amused and annoyed. If she didn’t know they were sincere, she would have thought they were trying to set her up.

"Quick, quick, quick! If one person can’t match her, surely we can together!" The group knew how to roll with it, determined not to lose face completely.

Jiang Wen, seeing their lack of grit, couldn’t help but laugh and scold them again. He turned to Lin Nannan and said, "They’re just like this—nothing meant by it."

"I know, they’re competing with me. Don’t interrupt and let me lose to them!" she joked.

Jiang Wen, who had been worried she might overthink it, immediately dropped it.

The competition was just for fun. Once everyone got used to Lin Nannan’s strength, they stopped paying attention and focused on their work. For a while, the only one feeling bored was Lu Dudu.

However, the little one, on her own, knew how to keep herself busy—after all, that’s how she had always been at the base.

By the time Lu Hang arrived, his wife was so busy he could hardly spot her, and his daughter was keeping plenty busy. Though she had left home clean, she now looked as if she had rolled in mud from head to toe, covered in dirt and enough to make anyone who saw her frown.

He walked over to his daughter, who was too busy playing to notice her father’s arrival, crouched down, and said, "I think you’re going to get spanked tonight!"

Lu Dudu looked up, confused. "Why?"

She had been well-behaved and hadn’t done anything wrong.

Lu Hang pointed out, "Look at your little hands. If it weren’t for these clothes, I’d think you were someone else’s child. You’re nothing like the sweet, clean kid we had this morning."

Lu Dudu looked down at her grubby hands, remembering how she had wiped her sweat and face with them earlier. Her face fell.

"Daddy, are you going to abandon me?" she asked, her eyes welling up with tears.
