Chapter 588
by 夏至三候Chapter 588
The Child Feels Wronged
However, the changes here made it difficult for the Mu family to proceed with the grave relocation. After all, outsiders were not allowed to enter, and even if they were acquainted with the Lu family, they wouldn’t be let in just like that. So, the matter was put on hold for the time being. The Mu family decided to wait until the following year to deal with it, which meant Mu Yunzhe had to head back first.
After helping out for several days, Zhou Cuiwei also had to return home due to family matters.
With two people leaving the household at once, taking care of Lu Dudu became the main concern. The little one was now learning to walk and refused to be carried, insisting on testing out her little feet. This meant someone had to bend over and support her so her feet could touch the ground, which was both hard on the back and tiring. After just two days, everyone was wiped out.
The little one was full of energy and never seemed to tire, even after a full day. By the time the Lu family finished their work in the fields, they had no energy left to give her attention, which made the little girl unhappy.
She felt that after her grandmother left, she was no longer the little treasure of the household.
Sometimes, feeling neglected because everyone was busy, she would end up crying herself to sleep, her little face smudged and dirty, nothing like the well-cared-for appearance she used to have.
But the work in the fields couldn’t be delayed, especially during this critical period. If they put it off and it rained hard, it would cause problems.
"Let’s just hire some help!" Lu Fang said, his heart sinking as he watched his little granddaughter cry herself to sleep again, her face dirty like a little kitten’s and her chubby cheeks noticeably thinner. He made the decision with resolve.
The rest of the Lu family fell silent as they looked at him.
"A Hang and the others entrusted their child to our care. We can’t put the fields before her. If they see she’s lost weight, they’ll be heartbroken," Lu Fang insisted, his tone firm as he noticed their hesitation.
Grandma Lu, looking at her great-granddaughter’s tear-streaked face, nodded and said, "Let’s do it. Forget about Nan Nan and A Hang—even I feel sorry for her. Du Du has lost so much weight these past few days. I’ve been so busy I haven’t even had time to feed her properly, and she’s ended up hungry."
Zhang Xiaofeng sighed. "We happened to hit the busiest time. We didn’t even have time to make food for her, and she cried from hunger several times."
They hadn’t expected that after Zhou Cuiwei and Mu Yunzhe left, the household would be so strapped for help.
"Then it’s settled. We work hard for the sake of the children—we can’t let them go hungry and lose weight. Let’s go find some help later. Once we’ve arranged it, they can start tomorrow," Grandma Lu said decisively.
Lu Zheng and Pan Xiaoping didn’t object. They were exhausted too, and though they felt sorry for Du Du, their energy was limited, and they simply couldn’t manage everything.
After making the decision, Lu Fang and Lu Zheng went together after dinner, while there was still some daylight, to check with a few families who might be able to help...
The people they wanted to ask were from families with many members but little land. Their own field work was mostly done, so they would likely be willing to take on paid work.
Sure enough, two households agreed right away. There were some who refused, but they didn’t dwell on it and continued searching around the village. Once they had gathered enough people, they returned home to report.
The two of them talked until they were hoarse and came back chugging water thirstily—a sight Lu Dudu had never seen before. The little one stared at them, giggling and clapping her hands, looking utterly adorable.
"You little rascal, always so curious about everything!" Zhang Xiaofeng said, unable to resist booping her granddaughter’s nose playfully. The little girl felt her nose itch and laughed even harder.
Exhausted as they were, everyone couldn’t help but smile at the sound of her laughter, feeling the day’s tiredness fade.
