Chapter 123
by 夏至三候Chapter 123
Li Zhang
At this point, Zhang Dabang understood the real reason behind his son’s return.
“What’s this about the food problem?” His mind was reeling.
A supposed fool turning out to be so astonishing—were the villagers blind?
Zhang Shengguo had no choice but to continue explaining, including the reactions of the Lins, which made Zhang Dabang couldn’t help laughing.
“This girl’s something else. I’ll go check her out myself in a few days!” Zhang Dabang said with a smile.
“Dad, no, you can’t go!” Concerned for his father’s safety, Zhang Shengguo immediately objected. “Just issue an order and arrange it.”
Zhang Dabang gave him a sharp look. “What would you know? If I don’t handle this personally, who else will?”
If Lin Nannan weren’t from the countryside but from a prestigious family, she’d get the respect she deserves. But as it stood, she was not only an orphan but also seen as a fool in others’ eyes. If this matter were delegated, who would truly prioritize it?
Zhang Shengguo had nothing to say to that.
“Fine, I’ll keep a low profile when I go. No one will even notice me,” Zhang Dabang reassured him.
Zhang Shengguo smirked. Yeah, right. His father keeping a low profile? That would be a miracle.
But given the gravity of the situation, he found himself somewhat supportive of the idea.
“Dad, what Lin Nannan’s growing is of extraordinary significance. I put in the report, but I’m afraid someone might interfere. That might be our best move if you go.” He had seen the crops planted in the fields and understood their importance, so he hoped to safeguard all of Lin Nannan’s interests in this matter.
He was also aware of the Lu family’s situation. Due to Lu Hang’s injuries, they had undergone drastic changes and were now financially strained.
“Dad, if Lin Nannan is unwilling, maybe money could be negotiated. The Lu family is short on funds!” Remembering Lin Nannan’s temperament, he added a reminder.
Zhang Dabang made a face.
“You know the Lu family is short on money, so why didn’t you negotiate with her? Her kind doesn’t come cheap!”
Zhang Shengguo froze, then smacked his forehead. “Lu Hang really led me astray.”
He had completely forgotten to use this approach to persuade her.
Zhang Dabang looked at him with disdain. “And here you were, envious of Lu Hang for finding such a clever wife. With brains like yours, you’re lucky to get anyone.”
At that moment, Zhang Shengguo wondered if he was actually adopted.
……
Some newcomers had settled in the village. Since they all arrived through proper procedures, after the initial curiosity from the villagers, everyone went back to their lives, paying no further attention to them.
Underneath the quiet facade of the village lurked shadows lurking.
Han Yan was doing better now thanks to the few people staying at her home. One of them was particularly generous, not only giving her money but even sharing meals, so she no longer needed to buy groceries.
Seeing that this man’s looks were no less impressive than Lu Hang’s and that he carried an air of scholarly refinement, Han Yan’s pulse quickened. She ate up the attention.
Li Zhang concealed the disdain and coldness in his eyes as he looked at the woman before him and remarked coolly, “Who lives next door? It’s a bit noisy.”
Han Yan’s face twisted in disgust as her gaze drifted toward the courtyard wall. “Just some villagers. Noise comes with the territory. If they’re disturbing you, I can go talk to them.”
Thinking of how the Lu family had turned their backs on her and even harmed her, Han Yan burned with resentment.
What she wanted most now was revenge against the Lu family—and to land herself a steady man so she could leave the village.
Her parents’ situation had ruined her chances with local boys, so she was itching to leave.
