Chapter 420
by 夏至三候Chapter 420
Liu Zi
When he heard the investigation would be straightforward, Lu Hang couldn’t wait to see the results.
However, some people, acting out of guilt, tried to get ahead of things and attempted to set a fire. They were discovered, but they didn’t catch the culprit—just managed to recover the record book.
Lu Hang and Chu Yun cross-checked the records, and their eyes finally landed on the last entry with the name Zhang Yun.
“What was this used for?” Lu Hang frowned, seeing only the name was listed, with no explanation of its use. He lowered his voice and asked.
Chu Yun wasn’t sure either and shook his head. “We’ll need to check with whoever handed out the meds to clarify.”
After asking around, they learned that Zhang Yun had been injured during training and needed anesthesia. On paper, it looked fine, but something didn’t sit right with Lu Hang. He bid farewell to Chu Yun and went to find Zhang Yun.
“Anesthesia?” Zhang Yun paused, surprised, then replied, “Yes, I did use it, but that day’s anesthesia felt fake. After getting it, I was still in agony—almost kicked the doc across the room.”
Lu Hang immediately pressed further, “Who touched the anesthesia when it got delivered?”
“I don’t know about that,” Zhang Yun scratched his head. “I was bedridden, so others took care of it. As for who the anesthesia passed through, I really have no idea.”
“Do you know who the doctor got the anesthesia from?” Lu Hang asked.
The question struck Zhang Yun as odd. “Wasn’t it arranged and delivered by the hospital?”
They were back to square one. Lu Hang felt that if they could just find this person, the case would be solved. He turned to leave but was stopped by Zhang Yun.
“Commander Lu, does this have something to do with the accusations against your wife?”
Lu Hang turned back and asked, “You think my wife didn’t do it?”
No one had openly told him whether they believed or doubted Nan Nan, but the sideways looks said it all: unless this matter was thoroughly investigated, Nan Nan’s name would stay mud.
“Of course I believe her!” Zhang Yun nodded hard to show his trust. “Not just me—even Zhao Qun and his wife believe Sis had nothing to do with it!”
Since returning, Lu Hang hadn’t seen Zhao Qun and his wife, so he was surprised to hear they trusted Nan Nan.
“Not a single doubt?” Lu Hang asked.
Zhang Yun thought for a moment. “Someone asked, and Zhao Qun said Sister-in-law is a big-time person and wouldn’t bother with his mom. Besides, she’s so busy, out before dawn, back after dark—she wouldn’t even have the chance to meet his mother. And the strangest thing is, why would his mother cooperate and go to the hospital just to let Sister-in-law kill her? That’s nuts!”
Lu Hang let out a sigh. “Exactly. Even Zhao Qun can see how obvious it is, yet some people still believe it.”
“Commander Lu, is this anesthesia thing tied to Sis’s mess?” Zhang Yun voiced his real question.
Since the matter wasn’t yet resolved, no matter how much he trusted Zhang Yun, Lu Hang didn’t reveal the truth. Instead, he explained, “It’s just a suspicion. We’ll see once we nail ’em.”
“This should be easy to investigate. Just find out who handled the… anesthesia?” Zhang Yun’s voice hitched mid-sentence, making Lu Hang glance at him.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
Zhang Yun opened his mouth as if to say something but hesitated, as though it was difficult to voice. Lu Hang grew curious.
“Speak your mind. Whatever you say here stays between us—it won’t involve you,” he assured.
“It’s not that,” Zhang Yun shook his head. “I’m not afraid, it’s just… I remember when I first got injured, it was Liu Zi who suggested I use anesthesia. I thought I could tough it out, but he told me that if I forced myself and didn’t recover properly, I’d regret it later. The doctor said the same thing, so I agreed. But afterward, I realized the anesthesia was completely useless—I was still drenched in sweat from the pain…”
“What are you suspecting?” Lu Hang asked.
Zhang Yun recalled, "At first, I didn’t suspect a thing, but now that I think about it, Liu Zi kept pushing me to use the anesthetic. When the anesthetic was delivered, he even took it himself to hand it to the doctor."
"Liu Zi..." Lu Hang frowned, thinking of the man whose smile always seemed so honest. He was clearly uncertain. "How’s he mixed up in this?"
"I don’t know," Zhang Yun shook his head.
Finally, a name had surfaced. Lu Hang took a deep breath and nodded. "I understand. Don’t worry—if we’re not sure, I won’t pin this on anyone."
Zhang Yun nodded. He still trusted Lu Hang—everyone knew the kind of man he was.
After Lu Hang left, Zhang Yun lay alone.
With nothing else to do, he started thinking about Liu Zi. Then it hit him, and he sat up abruptly, gritting his teeth as the pain shot through his wound...
"It really was him!" Zhang Yun muttered, then immediately grabbed his crutches, stood up, and called for someone to bring Lu Hang back.
Lu Hang hadn’t gone far before he was summoned back. Seeing Zhang Yun sweating anxiously, he asked, "What’s going on?"
"I just remembered—during training, I wouldn’t have gotten injured if not for Liu Zi. At the time, I didn’t think much of it since accidents happen, but now that I think carefully, the way he pinned me down was off. It felt intentional, like he was gunning for me. Combined with what we just discussed, his real goal was to get me injured so I’d need the anesthetic..."
"Commander Lu, Liu Zi’s up to no good!" he concluded.
There was no joy in Lu Hang’s eyes—only grim seriousness. "Even if we suspect him, the anesthetic’s already been used. We’ve got no proof. We gotta figure out how he tricked the old lady into leaving to find even the slightest clue."
"From here?" Zhang Yun hesitated, then remembered that Lu Hang had been away on a mission and didn’t know Liu Zi had moved into the family quarters. He quickly explained, "Commander Lu, Liu Zi’s wife came over, so he’s already moved in with her in the family quarters."
"What?" Lu Hang perked up instantly, the confusion in his mind suddenly clearing.
"Zhang Yun, if we can clear this up for your sister-in-law, you’ll have contributed the most!" he said gratefully before turning to leave.
This time, he didn’t head to the hospital but went straight to the family quarters.
After Zhu Xiaojin’s brutal murder, with the killer still in the ranks—though Lin Nannan had been arrested—most believed she was innocent. While the investigation continued, no one could come or go without orders. As a result, the military wives hadn’t gone out to gather herbs but were instead sorting the herbs they’d already gathered in the yard.
When they saw Lu Hang return, they all asked how things were going.
Hu Zhaoxia could visit Lin Nannan, but the others couldn’t, so they didn’t know how she was doing and wanted to ask Lu Hang.
Instead of answering, Lu Hang scanned the area and asked, "Where does Liu Zi live?"
Xiao Pei pointed in a direction and asked, "What’s wrong?"
