Chapter 283

I Believe in Evidence
Lu Heng had already intended to eliminate the Zheng family, so he naturally supported the idea. However, considering the power dynamics in Nanshi, he lowered his voice and said, "This still needs to be discussed with the higher-ups. Wiping out the Zheng family would be satisfying, but if it disrupts the balance in Nanshi and allows one faction to dominate, the fallout might be catastrophic."
"Then you discuss it. Whatever the case, we'll need firepower when dealing with anyone!" On this matter, Lin Nannan couldn't be bothered with the politics—she preferred direct action.
"Alright, we’ll decide after the discussion." Lu Heng agreed, then suddenly thought of something and mused, "If we could locate the Zheng family’s ammunition depot and turn their own arsenal against them, that would be even better."
That way, they wouldn’t need to request additional supplies from above.
Lin Nannan stared at Lu Heng for a moment before grinning. "If that really happens, Zheng Jie would probably have a goddamn aneurysm!"
Using their own weapons against them—Now that's poetic justice!
"Heh, by then, it won’t just be rage—it’ll be him pushing up daisies!" Lu Heng sneered.
The couple was all guts and no brakes. Once they realized Zheng Jie was up to no good, they were determined to make him eat dirt, secretly plotting ways to stir trouble.
While they were discussing, others were also quietly pondering, convinced by Lin Nannan’s words that the Zheng family’s business dealings were shadier than a back alley. Otherwise, how could they have established themselves so firmly in the chaotic Nanshi?
In other words, without lifting a finger, Lin Nannan had planted doubt in everyone's minds toward Zheng Jie with just a few words.
Lin Kangnian was even more direct. Sensing the hidden meaning in Lin Nannan’s words, he immediately sought them out and asked if they had discovered something—otherwise, why would they target Zheng Jie specifically?
"You believe us?" Lin Nannan looked at him bluntly.
"I believe in evidence." Lin Kangnian didn’t act impulsively but spoke patiently. "This isn’t something where mere accusations can justify moving against the Zheng family."
Even though his reasoning was sound, Lin Nannan was still furious. She gritted her teeth and said, "Who’s moving against them? It was the Zheng family who attacked Lu Heng first! Just because he happened to cross paths with them once, they went for the kill—leaving him paralyzed and nearly dragging the entire Lu family down with him!"
Lin Kangnian had done his homework on Lin Nannan and knew why the two had married, as well as the reason for Lu Heng’s paralysis. Some things, though hushed up tight, could still be uncovered with investigation and careful thought.
Still, he hadn’t expected the Zheng family to be involved.
"Are you certain?" He looked at Lu Heng, his expression grave.
Lu Heng set his jaw, his gaze sharp. "There’s no concrete evidence, but when you analyze the whole situation, the Zheng family is the most suspicious. My family was under surveillance—the moment Commander Zhang appeared, they were on guard. That’s why this mission felt like it was served to them gift-wrapped, with no secrecy at all. They intercepted it immediately. If the Zheng family hadn’t feared that Commander Zhang’s death here would trigger a full investigation by the Zhang family and expose them, they wouldn’t have left any survivors."
Lin Kangnian was on his feet in an instant after hearing Lu Heng’s words.
He paced the room, running the angles...
"If the Zheng family really did attack you, then their influence in Nanshi runs deeper than we thought," he said solemnly.
"Runs deeper? They even tried to make a play for Nan Nan!" Lu Heng clenched his teeth at the thought of their schemes.
Lin Kangnian spun on his heel to face Lu Heng. "How did the Zheng family even know about Nan Nan?"
"Like I said, the Zheng family only needed to keep an eye on the Zhang family. Zhang Shengguo stayed with us in the capital for so long—they were bound to catch wind of it. Back then, you were all about keeping me safe, but no one thought to conceal my movements. So when they saw me entering and leaving the research institute, combined with their attitude, it was easy to deduce what a high-value target I was," Lin Nannan explained.
