Chapter 497
by 夏至三候Chapter 497
Not Being Softhearted
Lu Heng thought for a moment before nodding. "They ring a bell. What about them?"
"They're in Beijing. I don't know who they offended, but the brother was injured and hospitalized, and the sister is taking care of him. When I went shopping the other day, I let my guard down and was seen carrying a lot of money, which made me a target. It wouldn’t have been a big deal—I could have handled it—but Jiang Xiaomeng suddenly rushed out and took a blow to the head. She was nearly knocked senseless and is still in the hospital. If we don’t resolve this, we won’t be able to leave."
After hearing this, Lu Heng frowned subconsciously. "Why are they still in Beijing? Didn’t they say they were here to visit relatives?"
That's one long visit.
Their daughter Dudu was already several months old. When they first met that pair, his wife wasn’t even pregnant yet. What relatives take a year or two to visit?
"That’s what they said, but the siblings are studying in Beijing. They’re not doing very well, and there’s no one around to take care of them," Lin Nannan explained after some thought.
Lu Heng thought for a moment and asked, "Do you want to help them?"
Lin Nannan shook her head. "I can’t help them. I just don’t want to owe anyone any favors!"
Having been here for so long, she had learned a thing or two about how things work. She knew that favors were the hardest to repay, which was why she was bending over backwards to ensure Jiang Xiaomeng recovered fully.
As for anything else, she wasn't in a position to help—after all, she had her own child to raise.
Taking care of Jiang Xiaopeng along the way was already her being polite.
Lu Heng laughed at her response. "I thought you were feeling softhearted and wanted to help them!"
Lin Nannan muttered, "Softhearted? Why? We only met once!"
She had met plenty of people just once. If she were softhearted toward all of them, how would she get by?
"Then let’s wrap this up before going back. I won’t be staying here for long, so I’m not sure if we’ll have enough time," he said, a bit worried.
"It should only take a few more days. When I had a concussion, I rested at home. Jiang Xiaomeng has been in the hospital for quite a while now, so she should be almost recovered. We can give her a little something to help out, and that should be enough," Lin Nannan laid out the plan simply and clearly, no beating around the bush.
Lu Heng loved this about her—decisive and straightforward, not one to be easily swayed by softheartedness.
Being softhearted often led to trouble. It wasn’t that he was afraid of trouble himself, but he worried that Nan Nan might suffer, and he couldn’t keep an eye on her all the time.
The two of them were so caught up in their chat that they completely forgot about their little girl.
Lu Dudu had fallen asleep after being fed, but when she woke up, she found that not only was her father gone, but her mother was missing too. Her little lips quivered, and she burst into tears.
Her cries rang through the entire Lin household, naturally alerting her parents.
"Dudu?" Lin Nannan sat up abruptly.
"I’ll go check!" Lu Heng got out of bed, throwing on his clothes as he spoke.
Lin Nannan couldn’t just sit still either. She got out of bed and dressed as well, and the couple walked out together.
As soon as they stepped out, they were met with their daughter’s sad eyes, full of accusation and grievance, making Lin Nannan feel inexplicably guilty...
"This child is getting cleverer as she grows. The moment she couldn’t see you, she started wailing. Your grandmother thought I had hurt her," Zhou Cuiwei said, handing the little one to Lu Heng. She then pinched the child’s nose and added with feigned annoyance, "After all the love I’ve shown her, and this is the thanks I get!"
Lu Dudu seemed to sense her grandmother’s displeasure. She babbled excitedly, though no one could understand her.
Lin Nannan rubbed her forehead and asked, "Is she hungry?"
