Chapter 264

Conning for Food
"Grandma, you're not just tricking me into going back so you can beat me to death, are you? You don’t actually plan to give me any meat, do you?" Lin Nannan retorted, her face full of suspicion.
The old woman pasted on a stiff smile. "Don't be silly! We’ve already bought food at home. You’ll have plenty to eat when we get back. Your mother cooked something special."
"No, I don’t want that. My mom’s cooking is terrible. It tastes awful. Give me money—I want to buy something good to eat. Otherwise, I won’t go back!" Lin Nannan stubbornly insisted.
Previously, she had been too focused on dealing with those traffickers and forgot to make them pay. So this time, after being targeted, she resisted at first but then went along with their plan. After all, who'd come out on top was still anyone's guess.
She figured she might as well eat her fill before dealing with these people. So no matter what the onlookers said, she stubbornly demanded money and food, leaving the old woman with no choice but to relent. Yet, the old woman couldn’t bear to let go of the "prey" she had almost caught. Gritting her teeth, she convinced herself she could make back double later and grinned. "Alright, what do you want to eat? Grandma will buy it for you!"
"I want to eat until I’m full!" Lin Nannan smiled faintly.
Hearing this, the old woman immediately relaxed. How much could a little girl possibly eat? She agreed cheerfully, "Fine, fine! As long as you’re happy, Grandma will buy you whatever you want!"
When old lady Zhao said this, she thought Lin Nannan would only eat a little. But Lin Nannan wanted to try everything—corn, eggs, potatoes, meat buns… If it was being sold, she sampled a little of everything. Not only did old lady Zhao grow increasingly tempted by the food herself, but she also realized Lin Nannan seemed to eat endlessly. After devouring food from three different stalls, she was still going, making old lady Zhao think she was seeing things.
"That should be enough," old lady Zhao said, her hands trembling as she paid, unable to hold back her advice.
Lin Nannan said with fake innocence. "But I’m not full yet, Grandma! Don’t you love me anymore?"
Old lady Zhao’s face twitched, wishing she could kick herself.
To show off her generosity earlier, she had pulled out a handful of change. Now, she couldn’t even stuff the remaining money back into her pocket. Some of the onlookers had been following them the whole time, tutting about what a disrespectful granddaughter Lin Nannan was, but their gawking was impossible to hide. This left old lady Zhao trapped—unable to back down and unable to persuade Lin Nannan to stop. She was so angry her whole body shook.
But that wasn’t all. Lin Nannan occasionally needled her further: "Grandma, are you feeling unwell? Did I eat too much? But I thought you loved me the most! Are you really getting cheap over a few bites?"
With so many people watching, old lady Zhao couldn’t even refuse. She was afraid that after spending so much, the girl might suddenly cry and refuse to go home, wasting all her money. So she clenched her teeth and said, "Of course not! Grandma’s just worried you’ll eat too much—it’s not good for your health!"
"How could that be? You know how big my appetite is, Grandma! If my family didn’t spoil me, how could I be so well-fed?" Lin Nannan affectionately latched onto old lady Zhao’s arm, giving her no chance to back out as she dragged her toward the next stall…
Old lady Zhao felt like she could hardly keep up, but Lin Nannan’s strength was overwhelming, pulling her along without any room for refusal.
The onlookers, who had initially thought Lin Nannan was unfilial, were now stunned by her appetite. They followed along out of sheer curiosity, amazed that a girl could pack away so much—far more than any ordinary family could afford to feed. They even wanted to see just how much she could eat before feeling full.
Her appetite was bigger than a grown man’s.
Some couldn’t resist asking old lady Zhao, their words cutting deep: "This granddaughter of yours eats so much yet is so well-fed. Your family must be rolling in it to raise her like this!"
