Chapter 348
by 夏至三候Chapter 348
Farewell
Treating wounds like these was even more painful. Lin Nannan frowned as she treated his injuries and reminded him, "No showering for a few days. I’ll help you wash up when needed!"
"Okay!"
Lu Hang, normally so commanding in public, had no comeback against Lin Nannan’s stern expression at home.
When she was done, Lin Nannan gave him anti-inflammatory meds and made sure he stayed in bed. As she tidied up, she filled him in about Jin Guizhi.
"If we don't handle this properly, it wouldn't be right. Political Commissar Chen suggested taking care of it quietly without much explanation—let them read between the lines."
Lu Hang sighed and said, "This time, they’ll likely have to go."
"What do you mean?" Lin Nannan looked at him questioningly.
"Zhang Daren is injured. If he doesn’t recover fully, he’ll have to get discharged," he said gravely.
Lin Nannan was stunned to hear this.
"Where was he injured?"
"His foot. He was sent to the hospital when we returned. We're still waiting on the results," Lu Hang said darkly.
Lin Nannan knew he couldn't stand seeing brothers get discharged due to injuries, but it was inevitable.
If she'd had any Healing Solution to spare, she would have helped Jin Guizhi regardless of what kind of person she was.
But now, with not a single drop left, there was nothing she could do.
"Rest first. Don't dwell on it." Knowing that Zhang Daren’s potential retirement would eat at him, Lin Nannan let him process it on his own...
They both held onto hope that Zhang Daren might stay.
But the news wasn't good. Even if Zhang Daren’s foot healed superficially, he could get by day-to-day, but hard training would reaggravate the injury. There was no chance of full recovery, so a medical discharge was unavoidable.
From the second floor, Lin Nannan heard Jin Guizhi’s gut-wrenching sobs—crying for their future, for her husband...
That day, the usually lively residential compound fell silent. Even the children were kept in check, as no one wanted to rub salt in the Zhang family’s wounds.
Afraid their own men might be next, no one dared to gossip at such a time.
Lin Nannan didn’t expect Jin Guizhi to come and bid her farewell.
Jin Guizhi’s eyes were swollen nearly shut from crying. Staring at Lin Nannan with a hoarse voice, she said, "My Daren told me that if Commander Lu hadn’t pulled him back, he might not even be alive..." Her voice broke as she spoke. "Your husband saved Daren, and yet I caused you trouble."
Lu Hang hadn’t gone into detail about what happened, and Lin Nannan didn’t press him. She sighed and said, "Let’s not dwell on the past. Lu Hang saving your husband was only natural—he’s his comrade, his brother."
Jin Guizhi wiped her tears, no longer hysterical, having accepted the final outcome.
"Once you’re back, take care. When you settle down, write to us so we know how you’re doing," Lin Nannan said softly.
Expecting resentment, Jin Guizhi trembled at Lin Nannan’s words and whispered, "We’ll be fine. As long as he’s alive and well, nothing else matters!"
"Exactly. Just being alive is enough. Remember to send letters—we’ll all be thinking of you."
As long as there’s life, there’s hope—just like with Lu Hang back then.
Even if paralyzed, at least he was still here. That was far better than parents burying their child.
"Okay," Jin Guizhi nodded, choking back tears.
