Chapter 764
by 夏至三候Chapter 764
Du Du Asks for Her Mother
"You are so stubborn. The only time you didn't resist me was probably when you married Nan Nan." Thinking back to their marriage, Zhang Xiaofeng couldn't help but sigh. "It really was fate between you and Nan Nan. Who would have thought that, while you usually refuse to be persuaded by anyone, that time you didn’t offer strong resistance."
"Yeah, I don’t know why either..." Lu Hang thought back to his marriage with Lin Nannan and found it unbelievable.
Logically, given his personality, he should have firmly refused. But somehow, after learning about Lin Nannan’s suffering in the Lin family, he softened. He thought that even if he couldn’t protect her himself, his family could. And once she could support herself, she could divorce him—it would still be better than staying with the Lin family.
But who would have thought that a moment of compassion would give him a lifelong soft spot?
That person, who once saw the world in black and white, seemed to have come just for him, painting color into his world and saving him in the process.
"That was fate between you two. People say only those destined to be together can make it through hardships. You’ve been through so much and always came out safe—this time will be no different!" Zhang Xiaofeng spoke softly but with conviction, as if trying to convince herself as well.
"Nan Nan will wake up. She can’t bear to be apart from Du Du, me, Dad, Mom, and Grandma..." The more people Lu Hang listed, the more it seemed as if having more people for Lin Nannan to care about would bring her back.
Only when the heart has something to hold onto will it refuse to stay asleep.
That was Lu Hang’s firm belief.
Mother and son encouraged each other, hoping for Lin Nannan to wake up...
The next day, as soon as Lu Dudu woke up, she insisted on seeing her mother, refusing to even eat. It took Zhou Cuiwei and Zhang Xiaofeng persuading her with gentle words to get her to drink a bowl of porridge and eat an egg...
Lu Hang’s injury wouldn’t reopen as long as he avoided strenuous movement, so he was allowed to leave his hospital room.
Lin Nannan’s condition was special, so her room was arranged not far from Lu Hang’s, though it was surrounded by security personnel with no other patients around.
Lu Hang didn’t carry Du Du. Instead, he held her little hand as they walked toward the other room, in complete silence the entire way...
Knowing that Lu Hang was taking Du Du to see Lin Nannan, everyone, including Lu Jianan, came together. They all hoped for a miracle this time...
Lin Nannan had already taken the second dose of medicine, but the results weren’t dramatic. So, Lu Jianan supported Lu Hang’s decision—perhaps Lin Nannan needed some stimulation to wake up.
And the only ones who could touch Lin Nannan’s heartstrings were Lu Hang and Lu Dudu.
When they reached the door of the room, Lu Hang placed his hand on it, about to push it open, when Du Du asked, "Daddy, is Mommy inside?"
Lu Hang looked down at her and softly replied, "Mhm," without another word, then pushed the door open.
The room, with only a single hospital bed, felt spacious, making the person on the bed seem lonely and evoking a pang of sorrow in their hearts.
Lu Hang led the child inside and closed the door behind them.
He walked to the bedside, looking at Lin Nannan, who remained unconscious, and felt his eyes grow warm...
"Du Du, Mommy is asleep. Talk to her, and she might wake up sooner to be with you," he said hoarsely, his voice low.
Lu Dudu didn’t think twice. After all, there were times when she woke up earlier than her mother. She immediately rushed over, hugged her mother’s arm, and cried out, "Mommy, wake up! Du Du is here. Get up and play with me!"
Her coaxing words had always worked like a charm, but this time, no matter how much she called, her mother didn’t respond. Lu Dudu’s expression quickly shifted to distress.
"Mommy, wake up! It’s me, Du Du! Don’t you want me anymore?" Her voice broke into sobs, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face, making those outside the door tear up as well.
Lu Dudu cried desperately, while Lu Hang remained silent, his own eyes reddening, hoping that Du Du’s cries would rouse the sleeping figure.
"Mommy, don’t leave Du Du! Du Du will be good, boo hoo..." Lu Dudu wailed, repeatedly calling for her "Mommy," but Lin Nannan showed no response at all...
"Daddy," Lu Dudu cried so hard she started hiccupping, looking up at the unmoving figure standing nearby, whimpering, "Why won’t Mommy talk to me? Does she not like Du Du anymore?"
Lu Hang suppressed his own discomfort, crouched down to face his tear-streaked daughter, wiped the tears from her cheeks, and pulled her into his arms. He explained softly, "Mommy loves Du Du the most—how could she ever not want you? She’s just sick and doesn’t know how much Du Du misses her… If she knew Du Du was crying so sadly, it would break her heart."
"Waaah…" Lu Hang’s comforting only made Lu Dudu cry harder. She wept and called out "Mommy" repeatedly, her distress clearly escalating.
"Du Du, Mommy is just sick. She’ll be fine and will wake up soon, okay?" His voice was gentle but firm, his arms holding Lu Dudu tightly, which gradually calmed her down.
With tear-filled eyes, Lu Dudu looked up at him and asked between sobs, "Daddy, will Mommy leave us?"
"No, Mommy will definitely wake up!" Lu Hang believed firmly that Nan Nan would wake up.
"But… but…" Lu Dudu hesitated for a long moment before saying sadly, "Mommy is like that pretty auntie in the base—she went to sleep and never woke up, and then she was buried in the empty field next to the base. Mommy and I even visited her, but she couldn’t talk to me anymore. Daddy, will Mommy be like that too? I don’t want Mommy to be like that. I want Mommy to wake up, hug me, and stay with me."
A child’s words are the most honest yet the most heartbreaking. Lu Hang felt an even heavier ache in his chest; it nearly took his breath away.
In truth, even though Lin Nannan’s condition was improving, as long as she remained unconscious, she was still in danger. They were desperate for her to wake up soon, to leave that danger behind, so everyone could feel at ease.
If she never regained consciousness, the final outcome would be an endless sleep—until she stopped breathing altogether.
"No, Mommy definitely won’t," Lu Hang said, ignoring the pain from his own injury as he lifted his daughter and sat by the bedside, gazing at the unconscious figure. "Du Du, Mommy can’t bear to leave us. She will wake up. Believe in her, okay?"
"Mommy," Lu Dudu, too distraught to take in his words, threw herself toward her mother, who lay as if asleep, sobbing uncontrollably as tears streamed down her face. "Mommy, wake up! Don’t you want Du Du anymore? Du Du needs Mommy, Du Du misses Mommy…"
The child’s heart-wrenching cries brought unstoppable tears to Lu Hang’s eyes as well. He stared at the motionless Lin Nannan, clenching his fists in agony.
Inside the room, the sorrow was overwhelming, and those outside were equally distraught—Zhang Xiaofeng and Zhou Cuiwei leaned on each other and cried.
