Chapter 273

Where the Issue Lies
She didn’t know how to cook, but Lu Hang did.
Lu Hang was injured and couldn’t push himself too hard, but she could wash, scrub, tend the fire, and chop vegetables, so it didn’t stop them from working together to make a good meal.
As long as no one caused trouble, both of them prioritized Lu Hang’s recovery, fearing that going out might cause trouble and put them in a tight spot.
They had a quiet, peaceful life. With the courtyard gate closed, all the chaos was shut out.
In the yard, Lu Hang lounged in a chair, swaying lazily, completely at ease.
Lin Nannan washed clothes nearby, careful not to scrub too hard. She just soaked them in soapy water to rinse them out, avoiding any excessive force that might ruin the fabric.
“I have a question for you!” Seeing him so carefree, Lin Nannan couldn’t help but pry. “When things went wrong, did you suspect anyone?”
Lu Hang knew Lin Nannan wasn’t one to beat around the bush. If she was bringing this up now, there had to be a reason. Squinting, he replied, “It couldn’t be the Zhang family.”
That meant it couldn’t be Zhang Shengguo, who had participated in the mission with him, and Zhang Dabang, who was aware of the operation.
“Why?” Lin Nannan asked, puzzled.
She wasn’t just being rash—she simply suspected that since Lu Hang had been targeted, and Zhang Shengguo was the one who had come to retrieve him, she had good reason to be suspicious.
“This mission wasn’t arranged by them. Besides, if they really wanted to deal with me, they wouldn’t bother with all this trouble. And… I trust them.” He said this with absolute certainty.
Lin Nannan snorted. “Easy for you to say now that you’re safe. Otherwise, I’d seriously doubt it!”
Lu Hang chuckled, understanding her discomfort with the situation here. Sitting up straight, he explained, “Nan City’s a mess. The reason we were sent here is that the locals can’t be trusted. If they colluded with outsiders, this was bound to happen. Understand?”
Lin Nannan rolled her eyes and shot back, “They’re the ones colluding! Your arrival here was supposed to be confidential, yet you were discovered immediately. Doesn’t that seem fishy to you?”
Lu Hang fell silent under her rebuttal, but his trust in the Zhang family remained unshaken.
“So, where does the problem lie?” he murmured. Seeing him deep in thought, Lin Nannan didn’t interrupt and kept battling with the laundry.
By the time she finished, Lu Hang still hadn’t figured it out. To make her case against the Zhang family, Lin Nannan pulled up a stool and sat beside him. “Does the Zhang family have any influence here?”
Lu Hang shook his head. “How could the Zhang family have influence here?”
“Alright, they don’t. But your mission was to dismantle the traitors collaborating with foreign forces here. Who stands to lose the most from that?” she pressed.
The question made Lu Hang ponder. His expression turned grave as he said, “Our original mission was to capture the criminal syndicate smuggling weapons and national treasures with foreign entities. But ever since we arrived, it felt like we were being watched at every turn. What should’ve been simple turned into a mess—especially this time, when we were exposed without any ambush. That confirmed someone was tracking us, which is why after breaking through, I didn’t regroup with Zhang Shengguo and the others but stayed here alone.”
Lin Nannan nodded. “Then tell me—if the mission failed and you withdrew for safety, their business wouldn’t take a hit. So why are they only targeting you?”
