Chapter 86
by 夏至三候Chapter 86
Lin Nannan’s Guidance
Lu Hang had already grown accustomed to these abrupt moments, so his expression remained calm. Others, however, felt uncomfortable witnessing it.
"Is it good?" Lin Nannan leaned closer and asked Lu Hang.
Lu Hang nodded.
Lin Nannan quickly pressed a white bun filled with crispy pork cracklings into Lu Hang’s hand, then turned to Lu Ming and said, "Why don’t you eat here too? Your auntie packed plenty!"
"No need. Auntie packed extra, just in case. I’ll bring more later," Lu Ming declined with a shake of his head. After a quick glance around, he added, "Sis, where’s the cup? I’ll get you some water."
The only drawback on the train was the lack of soup—only plain water to go with the meal.
Without a second thought, Lin Nannan handed him the ceramic mug.
After fetching water for them, Lu Ming left.
Lin Nannan didn’t press him to stay. Once the water cooled a bit, she helped Lu Hang eat...
Having already finished one white bun, he quickly refused when Lin Nannan took out a second one for him. "That was specially made for you by Grandma. You should eat it!"
Lin Nannan didn’t respond verbally but answered with action.
The white bun, stuffed with crispy pork cracklings and pickled vegetables, filled the whole train car with its aroma, making everyone’s mouths water...
But everyone had witnessed Lin Nannan’s intimidating aura. No matter how badly they wanted some, no one dared to cause a scene.
Once Lu Hang was full, he lay back on the bunk. After making sure he was settled, Lin Nannan began her own meal. She crumbled the cracklings with a crisp sound, layered them inside a black bun, then peeled and mashed a hard-boiled egg, mixing it with half of the pickled vegetables. As she ate, she chatted with Lu Hang, "A Yuan’s trick really works. The same ingredients, but such a different taste!"
"When we get to the city, have Qian Qian treat you to something tasty." Knowing her love for good food, Lu Hang instinctively wanted to offer her every delicacy he could.
Lin Nannan didn’t decline but nodded instead. "If I find something tasty, I’ll bring some back for you!"
"Good!" Seeing her mouth shiny with grease, Lu Hang handed her a handkerchief.
Though they didn’t engage in overt displays of affection, their closeness was obvious, drawing the gazes of those around them.
However, Lin Nannan’s intimidating presence kept anyone from speaking up, afraid their kindness might backfire and invite unnecessary trouble.
Thus, over the two-day train ride, the Lu family took turns bringing meals and drinks, leaving Lin Nannan with only the task of accompanying and caring for Lu Hang.
The deterrence from the first day ensured the carriage remained peaceful, without a single disruption—pleasing Lin Nannan greatly.
After disembarking, Lin Nannan felt relieved, as did the two families who had traveled with them, finally able to relax.
Thanks to prior arrangements, someone was indeed waiting for them at the station.
Upon spotting Lu Hang, A Zhang, who had once visited the Lu family, excitedly waved. When the two groups met, he exclaimed, "Finally, you’re here! We were worried you might not adjust well on the train!"
The Lu family greeted him warmly, exchanged a few words, and then headed straight for the hospital.
A Zhang had been unaware of Lin Nannan’s strength until he saw her effortlessly carry Lu Hang into the car. His eyes widened in shock.
Even with his own strength, he knew he couldn’t have managed that. He looked at Lin Nannan with newfound respect.
"Nan Nan’s strength comes from years of training," Zhang Xiaofeng quickly explained, noticing his astonishment.
As for whether they believed it or not, she had no idea.
A Zhang snapped out of his thoughts, dodged the subject, and said with a smile, "Let's hurry. Everything’s set up at the hospital. A Hang can get checked as soon as he arrives."
Knowing a fair number of people were coming, Commander Zhang had arranged two cars. Lin Nannan and Lu Hang sat in the back, with plenty of room to spare.
Along the way, A Zhang chatted nonstop about Lu Hang’s stories. Lin Nannan listened with great interest, and even Lu Fang in the passenger seat was grinning from ear to ear. He had never heard his son mention these experiences before, so hearing them now had him beaming the whole way.
The hospital was prepped ahead of time, so as soon as Lu Hang arrived, he was whisked off for tests.
The tension from the journey suddenly eased once Lu Hang went in. Everyone exchanged glances, at a bit of a loss, unsure of what to do next, feeling a bit lost.
"Uncle, Aunt, everyone must be hungry. A Ming and I’ll grab some food!" Jiang Qianqian suggested.
Zhang Xiaofeng snapped to attention and said, "Right, right! Who knows how long A Hang’ll be? We should eat something first. Qian Qian, take your uncles with you. I'll hold down the fort..."
Lu Fang shook his head. "Let the younger ones go. I'll stay here with you."
Seeing this, A Zhang quickly said, "I'll handle the arrangements. You all sit here and rest for a bit."
"We can't trouble you like this. My niece knows her way around here—she can manage. No need to bother you," Lu Fang replied, deeply touched by A Zhang’s kindness.
"It's nothing. A Hang and I have been brothers for years. Being able to help is what makes me happiest," he answered before insisting on making the arrangements, leaving the Lu family no room to refuse.
Lu Fang and Zhang Xiaofeng exchanged glances—this was one favor they’d never live down!
As they murmured among themselves, Lin Nannan overheard them. Watching A Zhang leave, a pensive gleam crossed her eyes.
A Zhang had truly put in effort. Somehow, he managed to get steamed buns, flatbreads, and even a bowl of stir-fried meat, the smell alone had everyone salivating.
"At this hour, there wasn’t much left, so I had the cook fry up some meat. Just a little something to keep you going!" A Zhang said apologetically.
"Don’t say that—we almost feel bad eating this!"
As they exchanged pleasantries, Lin Nannan rubbed her stomach, starving and ready to wolf it down.
The warm buns and hot dishes perked everyone right up.
When A Zhang and the others were about to leave, Lin Nannan offered to see them off. Zhang Xiaofeng and the others were puzzled but didn’t stop her.
As they got into the car, Lin Nannan offhandedly advised A Zhang not to rush for quick success but to build step by step for lasting results.
A Zhang and the others mumbled their thanks at first, then drove off.
However, as they drove, A Zhang couldn’t help but recall Lin Nannan’s words. His expression changed, and he suddenly felt uneasy.
Back at the barracks, he immediately sought out Zhang Shengguo and relayed Lin Nannan’s advice. Then, on the training ground, he tried it himself—only to break through his previous stagnation, even surpassing his best performance.
Zhang Shengguo thought it might be a coincidence, so he selected a few others to test it. Using Lin Nannan’s method, everyone improved, achieving better results than before.
A Zhang was utterly astonished. "A Hang hit the jackpot—to marry such an incredible wife!"
"Whose wife?" a passing comrade asked.
