    Chapter 448

    Trouble

He stated that if Zhang Xiaofeng didn’t return, he would go over himself, which left Zhang Xiaofeng at a loss for words. Finally, when the baby was a little over two months old, she couldn’t put it off any longer and decided to go back.

"Are you sure you’ll be alright handling the baby by yourself?" Zhang Xiaofeng asked worriedly.

Lin Nannan nodded and said, "It’s fine. I’ve got the strength—she’s no trouble for me!"

Zhang Xiaofeng was mainly concerned about this because her plump granddaughter was a real handful. Just holding her for a bit made your arms ache. Only Lin Nannan, with her strength, and Lu Hang, who exercised regularly, didn’t seem to mind.

"Then I’ll go back first. I’ll come again after some time!" Zhang Xiaofeng couldn’t bear to leave her granddaughter but also missed home, torn in two.

In the end, she decided to return because she had been away for several months and was homesick, so she decided to head back.

"Alright. If I can’t handle it, I’ll call you," Lin Nannan said matter-of-factly. "Then you and Dad can come together!"

    "Okay!"

Zhang Xiaofeng agreed without a second thought.

Lu Dudu was still too little to go to the train station to see Grandma off, so Lu Hang went alone this time.

After her full-month celebration, Lu Dudu became the darling of the compound and even the military camp. Wherever she went, folks couldn’t get enough of her. Lin Nannan often carried her out, only to find that the baby wasn’t in her arms for more than a minute.

Though Lu Dudu was chubby and a handful to hold, with so many people taking turns, it wasn’t as noticeable. The little tyke, unlike most babies, wasn’t afraid of strangers at all—she was happy in anyone’s arms, sometimes even squirming with excitement to the point where it was hard to keep hold of her.

This was Lin Nannan’s biggest worry. She wouldn’t let anyone who wasn’t as strong hold the baby, worried they might drop her.

After having the baby, the usually busy Lin Nannan suddenly had time on her hands, devoting herself full-time to raising her baby at home. She loved watching the baby grow and change bit by bit, sharing every little detail with Lu Hang every day. As first-time parents, the couple paid close attention to every aspect of their child’s development.

One day, since Lu Hang wasn’t home, Lin Nannan carried the baby to the canteen to get food and got a kick out of spotting braised pork with potatoes.

"Are these from our own harvest?" she asked eagerly.

Everyone in the military knew how Jin Guizhi had nearly been expelled from the camp over potatoes, and how precious the potatoes in Lin Nannan’s hands were. After being handed over, no one dared to covet them, but the memory of those potatoes remained fresh in everyone’s minds.

As soon as Lin Nannan asked, the cook immediately smiled and said, "Yes, homegrown! They say it’s the second harvest, so they sent some over for everyone to try!"

Lin Nannan’s eyes lit up. She ordered a serving of braised pork with potatoes and said eagerly, "I’ve gotta taste this for myself! Wonder if mass-growing ’em changes the flavor!"

"I heard the yield hasn’t decreased, so the flavor shouldn’t be affected," the cook replied.

"That’s good! Then I’ll go eat now!" Lin Nannan said after getting her food.

"Alright. If it’s not tasty, just give me a holler!" the cook said cheerfully.

Of all the people in the canteen, Lin Nannan was their favorite. She was always so appreciative, praising their cooking every time and finishing every bite without complaint.

Let’s be real—the canteen food was nothing special. It was low on oil and salt, just edible. Those with picky tastes often didn’t like it much, but Lin Nannan genuinely enjoyed it, always saying it was delicious and proving it by cleaning her plate. It was hard not to like her.

The potatoes were as delicious as ever, with the same rich flavor Lin Nannan remembered, which delighted her.

She had been worried that the seeds might degrade over successive plantings, altering the taste and yield, which would have been concerning.

They had placed so much hope on these harvests. If yields decreased, they wouldn’t blame the seeds but themselves for not putting in enough effort.

Now, after several planting cycles, the potatoes showed no change, proving that, at least for the time being, the yield wouldn’t drop—and the same likely applied to the other seeds.

Suddenly, Lin Nannan wondered how Mr. Hu's progress was doing and whether there had been any changes!

At this thought, she couldn't help but think of Lu Yuan. She hadn't heard from her since she last went back, and Lin Nannan had no idea how she was doing.

She thought about calling Lu Yuan when she had time, but with the baby, she forgot. Then, not long after, she received a phone call...

Hearing that someone was looking for her, Lin Nannan assumed it was someone from the Lin family, so she rushed to answer with the baby. But the caller wasn’t from the Lin family—it was unexpectedly Mr. Hu.

"Nan Nan, come to Beijing. A Yuan is in trouble!" Mr. Hu said tiredly over the phone.

Lin Nannan frowned, worried. "What's wrong? Is she hurt? Was she attacked!?"

"It's complicated. Just come first!" Mr. Hu replied.

"Alright, I understand!" Lin Nannan didn’t mention that bringing the baby would be difficult. Since Mr. Hu had reached out, it must be important, so she had to go.

If she went, the baby had to come along. As for Lu Hang... she wasn’t so sure.

Right away, she went back to pack. It was too late to leave today, so she decided to wait for Lu Hang to return and have him buy the train tickets. Whether he could come along would depend on his arrangements.

When Lu Hang got back and saw the packed luggage, he panicked, afraid he'd messed up and his wife was running away from home.

Lin Nannan had considered all sorts of scenarios but never expected Lu Hang to say that.

"Running away? Don't be ridiculous! A Yuan is in trouble. Mr. Hu called - A Yuan needs me!" she explained, pointing at the luggage.

"Trouble?" Lu Hang froze, then realized his voice had risen, making their daughter look up. He reached out to take the baby from Lin Nannan’s arms and held her, asking, "What exactly happened?"

Lin Nannan frowned. "I don’t know the details. Mr. Hu just said I should go as soon as possible..."

Lu Hang’s brow furrowed, clearly troubled. Lin Nannan looked at him and asked, "Do you have a mission?"

"Yes," Lu Hang admitted without hiding it. "It’s already being arranged. Can’t get out of it."

Having mentally prepared herself, Lin Nannan wasn’t disappointed. Instead, she reassured him, "Just get me to the station. I can take care of the baby. It’s not far to Beijing—just one night on the train. I’ll arrange for someone to meet me. Don’t worry."

How could Lu Hang not worry? He pursed his lips, thinking for a moment before saying, "I’ll send someone else to handle A Yuan’s situation. You shouldn’t go."

"But Mr. Hu specifically asked for me..." Lin Nannan hesitated.

"Have you forgotten? You shouldn't be seen in public," Lu Hang reminded her.

Traveling alone with the baby was already concerning. If someone targeted her, he didn’t even want to imagine what might happen...
