Chapter 426
by 夏至三候Chapter 426
Epilogue
After Lu Hang returned, he told Lin Nannan everything, which made her sigh heavily.
"She clearly didn’t want to be controlled, yet she did the worst thing possible!" Lin Nannan thought Han Yan was kind of dumb—smart enough to come up with such a detailed plan, yet so confused about her own situation.
If she’d just stayed on base, no outsiders could reach her, and she could have protected herself.
Liu Zi treated her well; she could have easily sought his help.
But she didn’t. She just wanted to burn everything down.
"She couldn’t stand seeing you happy!" Lu Hang muttered grimly. "Maybe she hesitated at first, but after seeing how well we were doing, all she cared about was tearing us down, to make us both suffer… And she was afraid—afraid her parents’ secrets would be exposed."
That back-and-forth messed her up, twisting her until she destroyed herself.
Lin Nannan understood her thoughts perfectly. After a long sigh, she said, "Man, what a shame about Granny A Chun!"
If not for Han Yan, the old woman might still be alive. Without those pie-in-the-sky promises, she would have been content with the small earnings from her daughter-in-law, living her quiet little life.
"She was too greedy and brought this on herself. Otherwise, it would have been Zhao Qun’s family suffering in the end." Lu Hang felt no sympathy, only that the old woman had gotten what she deserved.
You can’t cure greedy—who else could she blame?
……
A lot of folks couldn’t wrap their heads around the fact that Han Yan was the one who killed Granny A Chun. After all, Han Yan looked like a fragile little thing—how could she have had the strength to commit murder?
Lu Hang had to spell it out: Granny A Chun had been drugged, had no clue how bad she was hurt until it was too late.
But by then, regret was useless.
Folks shook their heads, trying to console A Chun and her husband. Fortunately, the couple had already accepted the truth and steeled themselves…
There was nothing left to do. They’d cried themselves out, and now even their anger had nowhere to go—those responsible had been arrested, and they couldn’t even face them.
Once the investigation concluded, Granny A Chun’s body had to be transported back. It was a pain, but unavoidable. Zhao Qun got stuck dealing with it too.
He had to accompany his wife and child to send his mother’s remains home. As for what awaited him upon his return, he was in the dark.
The deeper investigation into Han Yan’s case no longer concerned Lu Hang.
After handing her over, he was done with it. They already knew everything they needed to, and whatever fate awaited Han Yan was no longer their concern.
……
"Finally, it’s all over!" Lin Nannan let out a relieved sigh upon hearing that Han Yan and Liu Zi had both been taken away.
"Yes, they’re gone," Lu Hang said quietly. "Before leaving, Liu Zi wanted to apologize to you in person. I shut that down."
"I don’t want to see them at all!" Lin Nannan shut that idea down hard.
She didn’t even want to see Han Yan—why would she meet Liu Zi?
Liu Zi had been careless, failing to thoroughly investigate Han Yan’s background and even helping cover for her, leading to this disaster. Being allowed to retire safely and return home was already the best outcome he could hope for.
The real question was how his parents would react once they learned that the carefully chosen bride they had arranged for him had not only ruined his future but also vanished—leaving them high and dry.
With the troublemakers dealt with, the unit settled back into quiet. Occasionally, when people mentioned the incident, they’d just shake their heads and sigh.
The courtyard felt much quieter with A Chun's family and Liu Zi's family no longer around.
When Lin Nannan began her maternity rest, Lu Jianan returned. He was stunned speechless for a while after learning about the huge mess that had happened in his absence.
"How come whenever something happens, I'm not around?" he couldn't help but complain.
Lin Nannan understood what he meant—if he had been there when she was in trouble, he could have helped. Unfortunately, he kept missing the action.
"Because they were targeting me. I only get targeted when I’ve got downtime, and that just happened to be when you were busiest!" Lin Nannan teased.
Lu Jianan didn’t smile, still rattled by the close call.
The prescriptions and medicines Lin Nannan had provided were worth their weight in gold—they were flat-out priceless. That was why his return had been delayed, as they needed thorough testing...
After the tests, the conclusion was clear to everyone: Lin Nannan can’t afford to get so much as a scratch. She was a national treasure.
Unaware of how highly she was valued, Lin Nannan was completely oblivious to Lu Jianan’s lingering fear.
They all knew how crucial Lin Nannan was—she couldn’t afford even the slightest mishap!
"You should have a security detail from now on," Lu Jianan suggested after some thought, convinced it was a good idea.
"I don’t want that..." She had been assigned guards before but didn’t like it.
"No, you do," Lu Jianan insisted firmly. "You can ask Commander Lu to arrange it. If not, I’ll request it myself. Either way, you must have someone by your side!"
Considering how Lin Nannan often landed herself in hot water that could scare people to death, he wouldn’t budge, leaving her no room to refuse.
What could Lin Nannan do? Lu Jianan’s proposal had everyone nodding along—everyone wanted her to have protection.
In the end, with no other choice, she agreed.
The selection of her guards required careful consideration, so while the arrangements were still pending, care packages from the Lin clan showed up.
The sheer volume of items, almost like moving house, made Lin Nannan feel as if the Lin family had dipped deep into the family coffers for her.
Looking at everything, she mused, "I think raising a child won’t require much effort from us—we just need to occasionally 'skim' off the Lin family."
Lu Hang was also bowled over by the Lin family’s generosity. Many of the items were for the baby, jumping the gun a bit, yet they had prepared everything.
"They’d be more than happy to," Lu Hang remarked matter-of-factly.
That got Lin Nannan sulking.
Because she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
The Lin family truly gave their all, piling them with goodies—so much that it was downright suffocating...
"Maybe we should return some of these things," Lin Nannan suggested.
Lu Hang also thought it was overkill but didn’t think her idea would work. "Do you really think they’d accept them back? They’d probably just bring everything over in person."
Lin Nannan fell silent, realizing Lu Hang was right—the Lin family would absolutely do that.
After a deep breath, she said, "Let’s prepare some gifts to send back to them."
With so many things received, some token thank-you gifts would be insufficient.
"What can we even prepare here?" Lu Hang just scratched his head.
After all, they mostly relied on supplies from home and couldn’t think of anything suitable.
Lin Nannan thought for a moment and said, "When you have time, go up the mountain and gather some wild edibles—they probably don’t have much of that there. I’ll also prepare some emergency meds and tonics, along with dried vegetables home-dried by the locals. Last time they left our village, they took some and raved about the flavor."
