Chapter 756
by 夏至三候Chapter 756
Reinforcements Are Here
To take good care of Lin Nannan and avoid frightening his daughter he hadn't seen in so long, Lu Hang followed Lu Jianan's suggestion and used the break to get some proper rest.
After the brief respite, the convoy set off again, but everyone was in much better spirits.
During the journey, Lu Hang once again urged Lu Jianan to check Lin Nannan's pulse. The conclusion was that her recovery was progressing better than before, which boosted Lu Hang's confidence and made him eager to reach the capital as soon as possible.
The daytime journey was calm and smooth, but instead of bringing relief, it put everyone even more on edge. No one dared to let their guard down.
Everyone hoped that night would not fall, but night fell anyway.
As the sky gradually darkened, Lu Hang made arrangements, telling everyone to stay alert for an attack.
This was a tough battle—if they lost, the entire journey would be meaningless.
Before midnight, their attackers could no longer hold back. Gunfire erupted, shattering the night's tranquility...
This attack was more intense than before, disrupting Lu Hang's plans and making Lu Jianan even more worried.
"If this continues, it will be bad for us. We don’t know when reinforcements will arrive, Lu Hang. We can’t hold out for long," Lu Jianan said, fully aware of their limited numbers and weaponry. The disparity in strength was significant—if reinforcements didn’t arrive in time, everyone here would perish; it would be like throwing Lin Nannan's life away for nothing.
Lu Hang understood this perfectly. He knew their resources better than anyone, but retreat was not an option.
"We can only wait for reinforcements!" he said sternly. "The people behind us are counting on us."
Retreating might allow them to evade these attackers, but they would not escape the enemies they had previously avoided. All those small groups added up to a serious threat, leaving them at a disadvantage.
"What should we do then?" Lu Jianan grew more anxious. "What if reinforcements don’t make it in time?"
Wouldn’t they be like lambs to the slaughter?
"They will come!" Lu Hang insisted stubbornly.
Lu Jianan had no idea where his confidence came from and grew increasingly frantic. "I know the higher-ups will arrange something, but you have to consider the worst-case scenario. What if the reinforcements are intercepted and can’t get here in time? It's not that I'm worried about what happens to us, but if anything happens to Nan Nan, the consequences would be unimaginable."
Although Lin Nannan was unconscious, Lu Jianan had learned much about her significance and understood why the authorities placed such importance on her. Lin Nannan absolutely could not be harmed.
If anything happened to her, it would be a devastating loss to the nation—one they could not afford.
Lu Hang glanced toward her and said firmly, "She will be fine!"
His stubbornness left Lu Jianan at a loss for words.
How could someone who cared so deeply for his wife be so stubborn at a time like this?
Didn’t he realize the consequences if Lin Nannan fell into enemy hands?
Seeing that he couldn’t persuade him, Lu Jianan turned away, no longer wanting to speak.
He couldn't help feeling regretful. If only he had known earlier that the medicine Lu Hang possessed could benefit Lin Nannan’s condition, he might have waited. Perhaps she would have recovered by now.
After all, Lin Nannan’s body was healing on its own, and with the addition of Lu Hang’s medicine, her condition had improved significantly compared to before.
If they had just been given a little more time, perhaps Lin Nannan would have woken up.
Everyone knew about Lin Nannan's fighting skills. If she were awake, she would be like adding wings to a tiger, rather than lying unconscious and motionless as she was now.
Lu Hang remained unaffected by Lu Jianan's words, stuck to his plan as if determined to fight to their last breath, though it wasn't doing much good.
Just as everyone felt they couldn't hang on much longer, they urged Lu Hang to take Lin Nannan and leave. Their mission was to protect Lin Nannan, so their first priority was getting her to safety.
Lu Hang did not agree. He rescued a wounded soldier and asked Lu Jianan to help treat him, clenching his teeth and holding his ground.
After bandaging the soldier's wound, Lu Jianan approached the already injured Lu Hang and asked, "What are you trying to prove?"
Given the lopsided fight, persistence would only lead to unnecessary losses, so he couldn't understand Lu Hang's reasoning.
This was tantamount to placing Lin Nannan in the most dangerous position. Lu Hang's stubbornness made no sense at all.
"We're not at that point yet!" Lu Hang still refused to yield, making Lu Jianan so mad he wanted to walk away.
It was the first time he had encountered someone so obstinate. He wished he could knock Lu Hang out cold with a punch and take him away directly.
But that was just a thought. While Lu Hang might be capable of knocking him out with one punch, he himself lacked the ability to do so.
Just as the battle grew increasingly difficult, the sound of gunfire suddenly shifted.
"The gunfire seems more intense!" Lu Jianan muttered upon hearing the sudden burst of shots, only to realize the situation was not as he had imagined.
The heavy shooting wasn't aimed at them.
"They're here!" Lu Hang muttered, then raised his voice: "Backup's here! Everyone, hold on!"
At the news of reinforcements, everyone's spirits lifted. The soldiers who had been gritting their teeth suddenly seemed to have got a second wind, their renewed vigor astonishing Lu Jianan.
With reinforcements arriving and victory in sight, everyone was determined to hold out to the end.
After a fierce firefight, a car came rolling up in the darkness, and Zhang Shengguo's voice rang out first...
Hearing Zhang Shengguo introduce himself, Lu Hang let out a sigh of relief and emerged from the shadows. "Commander Zhang, it's me!"
"Lu Hang?" Zhang Shengguo recognized the familiar voice in disbelief, then stepped out of the vehicle and approached.
The two met under the moonlight. Lu Hang was stained with blood, but his posture remained upright.
"It really is you!" Zhang Shengguo broke into a grin at the sight of him. "I had a feeling this involved the two of you, and it turns out I was right. This time, are you escorting your wife to the capital?"
Lu Hang nodded, but his expression remained grim. "My wife is in trouble. She's slipped into a coma. The local doctors couldn't help, so we're making a run for the capital tonight."
When Zhang Shengguo saw Lu Hang, he initially thought it was a set up. After all, Lu Hang had once saved him when his own life hung in the balance. He assumed Lin Nannan's illness wasn't that serious, unaware of the true gravity of the situation.
"I'll escort you to the capital immediately. I'll have my men secure the area here," Zhang Shengguo said without hesitation.
Lu Hang did not refuse but cautioned, "Make sure to get every last one of them. These people have been targeting Nan Nan relentlessly."
"Don't worry, this time we'll finish them off for good!"
Knowing what mattered most at the moment, the two exchanged few pleasantries. Once it was decided they would travel through the night, Zhang Shengguo immediately began making arrangements...
Not only Zhang Shengguo, but Lu Hang also made arrangements this time.
He left behind the soldiers who were injured but not in critical condition. With the doctors and medicine Zhang Shengguo had brought from the capital, they could rest and recover there instead of continuing the arduous journey overnight.
After the arrangements were made, Zhang Shengguo's men took point, with Lu Hang and the others following behind...
The obstacles on the road were cleared by the people Zhang Shengguo brought, so they made it through without a hitch until by the time the sky began to lighten, everyone knew the mission was a success.
Lu Hang was also injured. Though not fatally, it still needed proper care, especially the bullet wound.
Lu Jianan couldn’t remove the bullet directly. After patching him up, it would have to wait until they reached Beijing.
As he disinfected Lu Hang’s wound, he asked, puzzled, "We were just one step away from missing the reinforcements. Weren’t you worried things might go south?"
This was something he had never been able to understand.
Seeing his persistent confusion, Lu Hang chuckled lightly and said, "Do you think I would expose my wife to danger?"
"I know you wouldn’t, which is why I can’t figure it out!"
"I had faith command had it under control," Lu Hang explained. "Of course, as you said, better safe than sorry. So, I knew exactly when to retreat…"
"But we were completely surrounded. How could we have retreated?" Lu Jianan remained skeptical.
Rubbing his brow, Lu Hang said, "Without weapons, the car’s a weapon too. The final plan was to abandon the vehicle. Nighttime’s the best cover for a getaway."
If he hadn’t been confident, he wouldn’t have held out for so long.
These matters weren’t Lu Jianan’s forte. Thinking of Lu Hang’s determination, he murmured, "It makes some sense, but you were pretty damn scary. I still don’t get why you dug your heels in like that."
The pain from his wound made Lu Hang frown slightly. Glancing down, he noticed the bandage was unusually tight and had a feeling Lu Jianan might’ve done it on purpose to get back at him.
"I didn’t want to let these people go!" he said coldly. "They almost harmed Du Du before and tried multiple times to take Nan Nan out. With this opportunity, as long as we held on, we could take down their whole operation. No way I was letting that chance go."
"But how could we possibly eliminate them all? Weren’t there still enemies who ambushed us earlier?" Lu Jianan sighed.
He knew Lin Nannan had suffered greatly because of this, but there was no helping it—those maniacs will do anything.
Whenever someone talented and capable emerged in their country, these forces would either try to recruit them or brainwash them, or resort to ruthless methods to harm them. That Lin Nannan’s made it this far was already a testament to her extreme caution.
So many of our best and brightest had been sacrificed because of this!
"Why don’t you consider why no one pursued us after we regrouped?" Lu Hang raised an eyebrow.
Lu Jianan was surprised. "You mean…"
"It’s like the mantis stalking the cicada—unaware of the oriole behind," Lu Hang explained slowly.
"So, this trip to Beijing—you anticipated such a situation from the start?"
Lu Hang sighed. "We anticipated it, but we never wanted it to happen. After all, nothing is more important than Nan Nan’s safety. Besides, Nan Nan couldn’t stay there any longer. Whether because of her identity or her health, both are… sensitive. If more people found out, it would only put her in greater danger."
After a moment of thought, he continued, "Moreover, staying there wasn’t an option anymore. Initially, the enemy hadn’t gotten wind of things, but given time, those watching would have discovered the truth. That’s why I didn’t hesitate to send her to Beijing—to take them by surprise."
