    Chapter 124

    Gathering Information

"Nah, it’s just that there always seems to be a crowd over there," Li Zhang remarked casually.

Han Yan's face darkened. "They gang up on people. They destroyed my parents."

Just then, a girl walked over, her hair tied in braids, her fair skin standing out in the village. She was a cheerful girl and close with Han Yan. Wrapping her arm around Han Yan affectionately, she said, "How heartless can they be, leaving you here all alone and miserable... But when I passed by, I saw a man in their house sitting in a wheelchair, his legs not working properly. How awful! And yet they’re laughing?"

Hearing Yu Yuning's words, Han Yan gritted her teeth, seething.

The Lus had claimed Lu Hang would never recover from his paralysis—unable to walk, sit up, or even take care of his basic needs. That’s why she kept her distance—she didn’t want to be stuck caring for him forever.

But now, watching the Lus spoil Lin Nannan rotten and seeing Lu Hang able to sit up, she felt utterly deceived.

If Lu Hang could recover, his future would be promising. And yet, she had ended up like this—clearly, she had been tricked.

Blinded by anger, she snapped, "Of course they're happy! Before, Lu Hang was bedridden, needing help even for the most basic things. Now he can sit up and move around the yard in a wheelchair—they’re probably thrilled."

Yu Yuning and Li Zhang shared a look, then glanced away, unnoticed by Han Yan.

"That wheelchair of his is impressive. I wonder where it came from!" Yu Yuning had never actually seen Lu Hang; she was just digging for intel.

Han Yan didn’t know either, but she had seen Lu Hang being pushed around by Lin Nannan in the wheelchair. She mused, "That wheelchair popped up out of nowhere, like it was custom-made for him. Some folks say his army buddy gave it to him, but who knows if that’s true?"

    Li Zhang knew better.

No army buddy—hell, not even the government—could’ve made that thing.

The wheelchair moved on its own, and that so-called "idiot" was anything but—her skills and strength were astonishing, sparking intense curiosity.

"If his comrade had such capabilities, they would’ve given it to him right after his injury. Why let him suffer in bed for so long?" Yu Yuning delivered the scripted line smoothly as both of them watched Han Yan.

Han Yan paused, then frowned. "If not his comrade, then who?"

"You live next door. Haven’t you noticed any strangers visiting the Lu family?" Li Zhang asked bluntly.

Han Yan was so clueless, it frustrated him—unless they spelled things out, she wouldn’t give clear answers.

"I have, but by the time those strangers came, Lu Hang already had the wheelchair," Han Yan replied, puzzled by their obsession with a damn wheelchair.

When it was clear they’d hit a dead end, Li Zhang pressed on, "When did the wheelchair first appear?"

"I don’t know!" Han Yan shook her head. "It popped up out of nowhere, like it was custom-made for him. Honestly, I’m not sure."

She’d been drowning in her own grief during that time to pay attention to anything else.

Yu Yuning changed the subject. "I heard from the villagers that Lu Hang’s wife is an idiot. Why would a guy like him marry an idiot?"
