Finding His Wife

"If you're worried, I can help you check on Lin Nannan’s whereabouts," Political Commissar Chen said softly, afraid he might be upset.

Lu Hang shook his head and said, "As long as I know where she is, that’s enough. But this mission this time isn’t over yet!"

"What do you mean?" Political Commissar Chen frowned, thinking of something. "The credit for your part of the mission has already been given. How can it not be over?"

"The person behind this hasn’t been caught yet. I rushed back because I was afraid they might harm Nan Nan, and I wanted to warn her. But who would’ve thought she’d just leave me behind and go home?" Lu Hang grew more resentful as he spoke.

His wife had simply abandoned him. If he ever caught her, he wouldn’t let her off so easily.

"You should count yourself lucky, kid!" Thinking about how Lin Nannan’s actions had everyone worried sick, he couldn’t help but complain. "Your wife’s sudden disappearance scared everyone half to death. If she hadn’t contacted us herself, we’d still have no idea where she was. So, the fact that we know she’s back home now is already her being considerate. Otherwise, you’d have even more to cry about."

At least this way, he didn’t have to worry himself sick every day.

Lu Hang thought about his wife’s nature. If something serious happened, she would definitely choose the path that worked best for her. The back hills of the base would be the ideal spot—the perimeter had been secured by the troops, so there was little danger there.

"Political Commissar Chen, may I use the phone?"

"Go ahead!"

Lu Hang picked up the receiver and first tried calling home. Perhaps everyone was busy, as no one answered. After trying for a long time with no response, he had no choice but to give up. He then called the Lin family in Beijing. The call was answered quickly, and as soon as he heard the voice on the other end, he knew it was his mother-in-law.

"Mom, it’s me, A Hang!" he said quickly.

"Lu Hang?" Zhou Cuiwei exclaimed happily. "Is your mission over? Where are you now? Du Du is here with me."

"I know. Political Commissar Chen told me. I just got back and found out Nan Nan isn’t here, but Du Du is with you, so I called to ask about things." After a pause, he asked quietly, "Mom, do you know about Nan Nan's situation?"

"I know. She’s fine, busy with research at the institute. Your parents have already called about it too." Zhou Cuiwei explained, sensing his concern.

Only after confirming his wife was safe did he breathe a sigh of relief.

"Why did she go back without saying a word? She even left without taking Du Du?" he asked, puzzled.

If she really had research to do, the military would have arranged for her and Du Du to return under escort.

"I’m not sure about that either. Maybe Nan Nan thought it was the best way to protect Du Du. I considered sending Du Du back, but she said she’d be too busy lately, and if Du Du went back, just her grandparents would be looking after her. I thought since there are more kids here to play with Du Du, it’d be better to keep her here." Zhou Cuiwei explained further, "A Hang, if you have time, you should come see her. The child keeps asking for her mom and dad…"

Lu Hang felt a pang of guilt.

Lin Nannan had stayed with their child for two years, while he, as a father, had been pretty much failing, unable to balance his responsibilities.

"Alright," he said softly. "I’ll come by when I can!"

Unaware that her decision had left Lu Hang completely baffled, Lin Nannan only learned that he had completed his mission and was back at the base after receiving his call.
