Chapter 491
by 夏至三候Chapter 491
Probing
Upon hearing this, Jiang Xiaomeng immediately turned her head. Perhaps she moved too forcefully, as her vision went black and she nearly collapsed.
Jiang Xiaopeng tried to grab her but tugged at his wound instead. He gasped in pain and fell back. Meanwhile, Lin Nannan reacted swiftly, catching Jiang Xiaomeng just in time before she hit her head.
Jiang Xiaomeng squeezed her eyes shut in pain, unable to speak for a long time.
"If you're not fully recovered, don't move around recklessly. Look how you've scared your brother," Lin Nannan said in exasperation.
She thought: Not fully healed yet running around—not only failing to take care of herself but also dragging others down.
This was what she wanted to say, but since the other had saved her, saying it outright would seem heartless. She could only bite her tongue.
"I was fine before," Jiang Xiaomeng explained, her eyes still closed. "It was just because I turned too suddenly that I felt dizzy!"
Lin Nannan didn’t respond. Instead, she looked at Jiang Xiaopeng and said, "I’ll take her back to lie down first."
"Sorry for the trouble," Jiang Xiaopeng said apologetically.
"It’s fine," Lin Nannan replied, helping Jiang Xiaomeng out as they walked.
The worried expression on Jiang Xiaopeng’s face vanished the moment Lin Nannan and Jiang Xiaomeng left, replaced by a grim look.
He felt that Lin Nannan was particularly difficult to deal with.
Even though Xiaomeng had gone to such lengths to save her, Lin Nannan remained unmoved, offering only superficial care without any genuine gratitude or intention to build a friendship. It was truly cold and heartless.
Moreover, according to reliable intelligence, Lin Nannan possessed secret life-saving medicine, yet she chose to watch Xiaomeng suffer rather than share it.
Even if Xiaomeng didn’t need it, he was severely injured and in desperate need, yet she didn't utter a word, didn't even come to check. She was utterly unyielding.
Earlier, he and Xiaomeng had been discussing how to get closer to Lin Nannan, befriend her, and uncover the secrets of her medicinal knowledge or any other secrets she might hold.
They had racked their brains but couldn’t come up with a solution. Lin Nannan was simply different from others—most people would feel grateful in such a situation, but Lin Nannan felt no such gratitude. Even the Lin family showed no appreciation, which was truly despicable.
Yet, to curry favor, they still couldn't lose their temper; they could only endure it.
If the Lin family knew what Jiang Xiaopeng was thinking, they would certainly argue back: after learning that Jiang Xiaomeng had saved Lin Nannan, they had intended to visit, but Lin Nannan refused. She stopped her family from going, which led to the current misunderstanding and made the Jiang siblings think the Lin family was cold and ungrateful.
Unaware of Jiang Xiaopeng’s thoughts, Lin Nannan helped Jiang Xiaomeng back to her ward. After waiting for her to lie down and recover for a while, she said, "You don’t need to take care of your brother. Focus on recovering yourself. If you don’t get better, I won’t be able to look after your matters once I leave."
"You’re leaving?" Jiang Xiaomeng immediately opened her eyes and looked at her, asking, "Sister, where are you going?"
"Back to my husband’s place. Like you, I’m just here visiting relatives," Lin Nannan said with a smile.
Jiang Xiaomeng smiled bitterly and said, "Sister, you’re here visiting relatives, but we’re not."
Lin Nannan raised an eyebrow, certain she hadn’t misremembered. "What do you mean? Didn’t you say you were here visiting relatives?"
"We were, but because we came from Yun City, they looked down on us and made snide remarks. My brother and I left their house," Jiang Xiaomeng explained, and only then did Lin Nannan understand their situation.
The siblings had come to the capital to visit relatives but were bullied. Too proud to stay, they left their relatives’ home and stayed in the capital to study.
It should have been a good thing, but some people still held a grudge against them. Jiang Xiaopeng was injured while protecting his sister.
"That’s just awful. Even without relying on them, how could they resort to violence? This is going too far. Are you just going to let it slide?" Lin Nannan asked indignantly.
Jiang Xiaomeng sighed deeply and said, "We didn't want to either, but they called our parents, their attitude was very sincere, and they even paid compensation. Our parents told us not to make a big deal out of it, saying they're still family."
"Sincere attitude?" Lin Nannan felt something was off and asked doubtfully, "Have I been visiting the hospital too little? How come I haven’t run into any of these relatives you’re talking about?"
"They haven’t come even once!" Jiang Xiaomeng said bitterly.
"Relatives like that—you’re better off without them!" Lin Nannan advised sincerely.
Jiang Xiaomeng nodded immediately, "Yes, we don’t want relatives like that. They really walked all over us. After sending my brother to the hospital, they just washed their hands of us."
"Alright, don’t be upset. Knowing your situation, it’s even more important for you to focus on recovering. Once you’re better, you can take care of your brother," Lin Nannan comforted her.
"Sigh, I don’t know when my brother will recover. With cracked ribs, it’ll take a long time to heal," she said anxiously, unable to hide her worry.
"Just take it one day at a time. At least they paid the medical bills," Lin Nannan said matter-of-factly. As for anything else, she hadn’t even considered it.
To protect her, her own family didn't even let her help her grandfather—let alone a stranger.
Even if Jiang Xiaopeng were severely injured and on the verge of death, what did it have to do with her? She wouldn’t offer her medicine and invite unnecessary trouble.
The troubles the Lin family had faced taught her the harsh reality of "having something valuable makes you a target." So, if strangers wanted her medicine—they could keep dreaming!
Jiang Xiaomeng, seeing that all her playing the victim and storytelling had gotten her nowhere with Lin Nannan—only just a few comforting words—was so angry her face turned red.
They had staged this whole situation hoping to make Lin Nannan sympathetic enough to offer her life-saving medicine, but she just played dumb and ignored the hints, making Jiang Xiaomeng’s suffering seem like a joke.
"Sigh, it’s because we’re not locals. If we were, we could pull some strings to get better medicine. Then my brother would recover faster and wouldn’t be in so much pain that he can’t even sleep," Jiang Xiaomeng continued pitifully, her face full of grievance.
Hearing this, Lin Nannan frowned and said, "I don’t think it works that way. When my grandfather was hospitalized, it was the same—they used whatever medicine was necessary. Nothing special!"
Jiang Xiaomeng closed her eyes to hide her dissatisfaction. "Is that so? Maybe I misunderstood."
While the Lin family was busy, she’d asked around. The two seriously injured people had wounds far worse than her brother’s, yet they recovered much faster. Her brother was still bedridden while they had already been discharged. There was no way that happened without special medicine.
But she had no proof. No matter how she probed, Lin Nannan remained unmoved, making her so angry she almost lost her temper.
This woman really had a heart of stone. Anyone else would have softened by now—at least saying something comforting. But she was just cold and unyielding, not an ounce of sympathy. It was infuriating.
