Chapter 44
byChapter 44
Hard to Fool
That day, Lu Hang’s two paternal aunts came over with their children.
Lu Hua, the eldest sister, was older than Lu Zheng, while Lu Lin was the youngest, so her children were also the youngest in the family.
A pair of children, three years apart, the youngest being only eight years old—at that hyper age—the Lu family’s courtyard instantly became lively.
The two aunts didn’t know much about Lu Hang’s marriage. They only knew it had happened suddenly and wasn’t exactly celebratory. So, after having a meal that day, they left without going out of their way to meet Lin Nannan. After all, they had previously heard that Lin Nannan was the village fool, and they didn’t want to accidentally provoke any trouble.
These past few days, both families had been busy, so they hadn’t visited again until now.
Upon their return, they asked around about Nan Nan and could hardly believe it when they heard about the things she had done.
“So, she’s not stupid?” The group was speaking in hushed tones in the kitchen.
“No, not at all. In fact, she’s quite clever!” Zhang Xiaofeng said with a smirk.
Lu Lin and Lu Hua exchanged skeptical glances.
“She’s not afraid of scaring off suitors?” Lu Lin couldn’t resist commenting.
It was only because her mother, elder brother, and sister-in-law let it slide with the Lins. Otherwise, who would want a fool?
“She had no choice. You don’t know how despicable those Lins are…” Pan Xiaoping filled them in on what happened, including Lu Fang’s injury, which infuriated the two sisters to the point of wanting to fight the Lins.
“They’re utterly shameless! How could they bully someone like that?” Lu Lin said indignantly.
Once someone earned the Lu family’s approval, they became one of their own. The Lus were fiercely protective, and she was no exception.
“If they weren’t shameless, how could they have mistreated Nan Nan for so many years? Nan Nan was clever, pretending to be mad and foolish, making sure the Lins never realized how strong she was or how skilled she was at farming. You should’ve seen their faces when they found out Nan Nan could farm as well as a grown man—they were sick with regret.” At this, Zhang Xiaofeng couldn’t help but laugh.
“Serves them right!”
The women kept chatting as they worked, their conversation revolving around Lin Nannan, but the atmosphere remained pleasant.
Meanwhile, in the courtyard, Lin Nannan watched the rowdy children, her eye twitching before she pursed her lips and went inside.
Kids were cute enough, but when they were annoying, they were *really* annoying.
She was afraid she might lose her temper and toss them out—not by politely opening the gate, but by throwing them out.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Hang asked, noticing her scowling face.
“They’re too noisy.” So noisy her head hurt.
Her petulant complaint made Lu Hang chuckle.
“Kids are always noisy. And yet, someone’s always going on about wanting children,” he teased.
“My children would definitely be different!”
That’s what every parent thought—reality, of course, was another matter.
Not daring to voice that thought, Lu Hang simply smiled and asked her to keep him company.
“Hmm?” Suddenly, she narrowed her eyes at him. “Wait, does that mean… you’re willing to have children with me?”
Realizing he’d stepped in it, Lu Hang said wryly, “What are you thinking? With your current health, having children is still way down the road.”
Lin Nannan might be strong, but years of mistreatment had left her skinny and weak. Even with the Lu family’s care, she wouldn’t bounce back overnight.
“So, once I’m healthy, you’ll agree?” She wasn’t buying it and pushed further.
