Chapter 670
by 夏至三候Chapter 670
No Chance for Excuses
"Who?" Lin Nannan asked between bites.
Seeing her curiosity but unwillingness to put down her chopsticks, Lu Hang smiled and explained, "His name is Zhang Yao. His injury wasn't caused by anyone else—it was his own fault. Combined with his usual performance, his getting discharged from the military is certain. He approached you because Qian Jun and the others have all improved, breaking their previous records. He wanted to give it a try, thinking that if he succeeded, he could stay. If not, he’d have an excuse to blame you, claiming you ruined his chances. That way, even if he couldn’t stay in the military, he’d still achieve his sly plan."
Lin Nannan was stunned for a moment before asking, "In his eyes, am I really that foolish?"
"Maybe he just thought you were a pushover," Lu Hang said, choosing a more polite phrase.
Rolling her eyes, Lin Nannan shot back, "I’ve never even spoken to them!"
This time, Lu Hang couldn’t help but laugh. Seeing his wife’s displeased expression, he held back a laugh and said, "Well, even though he’s scheming, if you ignore him, none of his plans will work. Anyway, his discharge is inevitable. Just don’t sweat him."
"I think he won’t give up easily," Lin Nannan said, considering his pushy attitude and feeling skeptical.
"Don’t worry. In the military, if you refuse, he won’t dare to force you. Besides, he’s injured. If he really tries anything, it’s hard to say who’d end up getting hurt," Lu Hang said with a shrug.
It wasn’t that he looked down on Zhang Yao, but the man’s tendency to cut corners was simply baffling. If he had put that effort into training seriously, he wouldn’t be facing discharge. It was his dishonesty that made him unfit to stay.
Lin Nannan caught the underlying meaning in his words and raised an eyebrow. "Can I really lay into him?"
"Better not. Just teach him a lesson to avoid getting entangled with him," Lu Hang advised, believing moderation was key.
It would allow her to blow off steam without giving him a chance to cling to her.
Lin Nannan agreed and nodded. "Alright, I understand."
As long as she didn’t have to take crap, she was fine with it. If he made the first move, however, she might not be able to control herself if she had to defend herself.
...
Just as Lin Nannan predicted, Zhang Yao wanted to ask her for a favor to find a way to stay in the military. But Lin Nannan avoided him, giving him no chance to find her.
Suspecting that his outcome was irreversible but with the official notice yet to arrive, Zhang Yao was fuming after failing to intercept Lin Nannan. He convinced himself that Lin Nannan was deliberately screwing him over.
It would have been such a simple favor—why wouldn’t she help him? It was his last chance.
He also tried seeking Lu Hang’s assistance, but Lu Hang was even more dismissive, outright stating that the situation wasn’t as simple as Zhang Yao thought and that he wasn’t suitable. It was clear Lu Hang looked down on him and was just giving him the runaround.
Otherwise, why was it that others could get help, but when it came to him, everything was different?
So, when the discharge notice finally arrived and he knew he had to leave, Zhang Yao’s biggest grudge was directed at Lin Nannan and Lu Hang. He felt they had ruined him.
Unfortunately, his hatred was futile. There was no way for him to seek revenge, especially in a military camp. If he dared to make a move, Lu Hang could easily take him out.
Just as he had made peace with leaving the next day, someone approached him.
"Are you really willing to leave like this?" Yu Ying looked at the pale and haggard Zhang Yao, tempting him like a siren...
Zhang Yao had never crossed paths with Yu Ying before. He knew who she was, but she didn’t recognize him. Her sudden appearance made him pretty wary of her motives.
"What choice do I have? I can’t even find them, let alone seek revenge," Zhang Yao let out a sigh, his expression resigned, which made Yu Ying laugh.
"Stop pretending," Yu Ying cut him off. "Let me tell you, I also have a blood feud against Lu Hang and his wife—the kind that won’t end until one of us is dead. You must have heard something about it. So, I have a great plan for revenge. Do you want to hear it?"
This made Zhang Yao’s heart skip a beat, but unable to suppress the anger in his heart, he couldn’t help but ask, "What’s the plan?"
Seeing that he was willing to listen, a flash of triumph crossed Yu Ying’s eyes. She then lowered her voice and said, "Lin Nannan and Lu Hang are both formidable fighters. With just a few of us, even a dozen people wouldn’t be enough to take them on. So, the only way to get revenge is to exploit their weakness. We can make them suffer unbearably."
A flicker of interest appeared on Zhang Yao’s previously skeptical face. He whispered, "What’s the plan?"
"Snatch Lu Dudu and take her out of the military camp!" As soon as Yu Ying finished speaking, Zhang Yao’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you crazy? How is that even possible?"
"Why not?" Yu Ying sneered. "Are you scared?"
Zhang Yao was indeed scared, but he couldn’t show it in front of Yu Ying, lest he be looked down upon. So, he gritted his teeth and insisted, "You should know that even though Lu Dudu is just a child, she’s alive. How can we make her come with us quietly? If she cries or makes a fuss, our plan will fail."
"Do you think I’m stupid? Of course, I won’t let her leave awake!" Yu Ying said through clenched teeth. "If it weren’t for this being a military camp, I would’ve already gotten rid of that little brat."
"What exactly are you planning?" Zhang Yao, thinking about how much pain it would cause Lin Nannan and Lu Hang, found Yu Ying’s idea particularly appealing. Eagerly, he pressed for more details.
He could already imagine Lu Hang and Lin Nannan being utterly devastated if the plan succeeded.
"I work at the pharmaceutical factory and know how to mix herbs to make a knockout drug. You can bring a large suitcase, drug her, and stuff her inside. She’s small enough, so she’ll fit perfectly. The dosage won’t be a problem either. Just walk right out with the suitcase, and once we’re gone, no one will be able to find her. Even if they suspect us, they won’t have any proof. What can they do? Besides, you can just leave her somewhere along the way. Without evidence, they’ll have no way to prove anything. Just think about how satisfying it will be to see them suspect us but be powerless to do anything!" Yu Ying grew more and more excited as she spoke, lost in her vengeful fantasy without considering the consequences.
She didn’t give it a second thought!
Everything had been fine before, but because of Lin Nannan, her father was implicated. After he was taken away, he never returned. She felt she had to plan ahead for herself; otherwise, if she were implicated, she’d face ridicule from everyone. She didn’t want to endure that kind of humiliation again, so she had to get out.
Zhang Yao was tempted by her description and whispered, "So, how do we get her into the suitcase? You know Lu Hang and Lin Nannan never let their child out of their sight. We won’t have any opportunity to act!"
"Don’t worry, there’s a way!" Yu Ying said with full confidence.
Her confidence made Zhang Yao curious, but no matter how much he pressed for details, she refused to elaborate, leaving him with no choice but to hold back...
The thought of getting revenge on Lin Nannan and her husband put him in a better mood.
"Then let’s work together. If there’s anything you need me to do, just let me know. But don’t make me be the fall guy!" Zhang Yao extended his hand, and Yu Ying immediately shook it, leaving him no room for regret.
Meanwhile, Lin Nannan, who already knew Zhang Yao was being discharged, had no idea someone was plotting against them. At the moment, she was busy tidying up the adjoining house with Lu Hang, preparing for her in-laws' arrival to ensure everything was ready, so they wouldn’t even lack pillows.
"I wonder how long Mom and Dad will stay this time. I wish they’d stay for good!" Lin Nannan said wistfully.
Lu Hang replied, "That’s up to you. I’m like the adopted one—my opinion doesn’t matter anyway!"
He looked a bit aggrieved, and Lin Nannan couldn’t help but laugh. "When Mom and Dad get here, I’ll talk to them and let them know how you feel!"
Lu Hang tweaked her cheek and said, "When did I ever say that? Don’t make things up!"
"You did! Otherwise, why wouldn’t you say it outright in front of Mom?" Lin Nannan didn’t give him a chance to argue.
Lu Hang chuckled wryly and gritted his teeth. "Don’t get too cocky. I know what you’re thinking—no need to hide it!"
Lin Nannan stuck her tongue out at him and laughed along, her face full of anticipation. "I wonder when they’ll arrive. I really hope they come soon..."
It wasn’t just Lin Nannan who felt this way; Lu Hang did too. However, when he was alone in the military, he couldn’t ask them to come because they hated having nothing to do, and there was nothing for them to do here, so they were unwilling to visit.
"They should be here in a few days. Stick around in the meantime, just in case they call and we miss it," Lu Hang reminded her.
It wasn’t that he wanted to restrict her, but if they both ended up missing the call, it’d be a real problem. So, it was better to have Lin Nannan stay put.
Lin Nannan didn’t refuse and nodded. "I understand. Don’t worry. If you’re busy, just leave it to me. Even if I can’t go out, I can get someone else to handle it."
"I understand!" Lu Hang didn't press further. He knew his wife had good judgment and wouldn't make baseless claims, so he left the matter entirely to her.
Lin Nannan had already made preparations and asked Lu Jianan for help.
Lu Jianan had more flexible time, could drive, and was resourceful.
Although they held different positions at work, they hadn't had a falling out or anything serious. Both knew it would be foolish to truly break ties, so Lin Nannan simply stopped going to the pharmaceutical factory.
For everything else, if she asked, Lu Jianan wouldn't refuse.
Everything was ready, and they were just waiting for the elderly couple to arrive. Lin Nannan was full of anticipation, telling Lu Dudu every day how wonderful her grandparents were, making it impossible for Lu Dudu not to look forward to seeing them.
Back in Beijing, after investigating the matter Lin Nannan had asked about, Lin Kangnian found that not only did the other party's reach extend far, but they also had solid backing. He thought about informing Lin Nannan, but his mother missed her granddaughter and, since it had been a long time since they last met, decided that since there was something to discuss, they might as well visit and talk face-to-face.
So, Lin Kangnian drove his mother there, and crucially, neither of them informed Lin Nannan in advance, saying they wanted to surprise them...
That day, after finishing his meal, Lu Hang went out. Lin Nannan and Lu Dudu were at home, both accustomed to this rhythm—one busy with chores, the other reading, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere.
