Chapter 61
by 夏至三候Chapter 61
Ruined Seedlings
"Mom," Nan Nan said angrily, "he trampled my seedlings!"
The Lu family knew how devoted Nan Nan was to her crops. These were special seeds and grew better than theirs—perhaps the best in the village. So when they heard the seedlings had been damaged, they immediately rushed over to check.
Upon seeing several plants crushed, they got furious.
"Can't you see?" Zhang Xiaofeng lashed out, leaving everyone stunned. "If you have something to say, why don’t you stand up and talk instead of lying around like this?"
"You're farmers yourselves—don’t you know how important crops are?" she demanded.
A Lin’s father flinched guiltily and argued, "They're just a few plants. I’ll compensate you!"
"Compensate?" Zhang Xiaofeng scoffed. "With what? Can’t you see Nan Nan’s crops are different from ours?"
The onlookers immediately turned to compare the two plots, quickly noticing the difference and murmuring among themselves.
"See?" Zhang Xiaofeng continued. "Those seeds were brought back by my son—the first of their kind in our village. What could you possibly use to compensate? Nan Nan poured her heart into these fields, and all her effort was ruined by your recklessness. She's being polite by not slapping you!" Zhang Xiaofeng fiercely defended her daughter-in-law, her tone sharp.
A Lin’s parents exchanged uneasy glances.
"Dad! Mom!" A Lin came running up, seeing his parents on the ground and Zhang Xiaofeng berating them. Enraged, he shouted, "Enough is enough!"
"Are you hurt?" A Lin helped them up, then turned to Nan Nan and roared, "What did I ever do to you? You ruin my life and now bully my parents?"
Seeing A Lin still determined to slander her, Nan Nan narrowed her eyes and said, "Mom, earlier he cussed out A Hang terribly. Could he have some secret background, just like He Ye?"
The moment those words left her mouth, not just A Lin but his parents panicked.
"We have no secret background!" A Lin’s father hastily defended. "We’re born-and-raised villagers—don’t you dare spread lies!"
"Yeah, that’s not something to joke about!" his mother chimed in.
Nan Nan smirked. "My mistake. I wouldn’t know. But anyone who insults A Hang must have ill intentions!"
A Lin gritted his teeth, furious but unwilling to provoke Nan Nan further. Even if their backgrounds were clean, rumors would spread if this escalated.
Taking a deep breath, he swallowed his anger and said, "I have no grudge against you. I spoke nonsense earlier—I apologize. But you need to clarify things. A Tao and I have no relationship. Your lies ruined my family and tarnished A Tao’s reputation. Isn’t that killing her?"
His implication was clear—he wanted Nan Nan to retract her words.
A smarter person might have seized the chance to back down, avoiding further trouble. But Nan Nan wasn’t like that. To her, anyone who badmouthed A Hang didn’t deserve mercy.
"The one who deserves to die is you," she said firmly. "You two-timed them, deceived them. You never planned to divorce or take A Tao away. So if anyone’s killing A Tao, it’s you!"
A Lin’s face darkened with rage, but he couldn’t refute her—because she was right after all.
Yet somehow, when scandals break out, the woman always gets blamed first.
