    Chapter 116

    What Matters Most

Zhang Shengguo came from a distinguished family and was skilled in his own right. Having served in the military for many years, he knew firearms inside out. Even as Lin Nannan expressed dissatisfaction, he could already sense the night-and-day difference in the assembled gun.

Excitedly, he thrust the gun into Lu Hang's hands. "Feel it—isn't it much lighter than our standard-issue guns? Did you notice the firing speed just now? This is way better than what we have."

Lu Hang knew his way around guns; otherwise, he wouldn’t have taken on such a heavy responsibility. Handling the jury-rigged pistol, he realized Commander Zhang was right. Despite its makeshift quality, the gun was far lighter than he expected, and the speed and force of the shot were better than he had imagined. Most importantly, it was assembled from discarded parts they had deemed useless. The implications were profound, which explained Zhang Shengguo’s excitement.

"Nan Nan, how many more like this can be assembled from the materials the commander brought?" He asked, stunned.

The results of the assembly weren’t ideal, and Lin Nannan wasn’t pleased. Pouting, she said, "At least a few more, but these materials are too poor. If you can get me machinery for polishing, I can reduce the weight even further and increase the speed."

Zhang Shengguo’s breathing grew uneven, his gaze burning intensely as he stared at Lin Nannan. "Are you serious?"

"Of course!" Lin Nannan replied confidently.

Though she no longer had her psychic powers, she was still on a whole different level from them. What they found impossible to achieve was, in her eyes, the simplest of tasks.

Just as Zhang Shengguo was about to speak, Lu Hang cut him off. "Commander, Nan Nan wants to stay in the village to grow crops."

He said this out of fear that the commander might try to take her away, which would just piss her off.

"Grow crops?" Zhang Shengguo was floored.

He was practically itching to pack Lin Nannan up right then and there and ship her off to the military's equipment research division, so she wouldn't waste her potential here.

God only knew how many years they'd been bullied over these weapons.

So, after witnessing Lin Nannan's skills, he suddenly felt as though they were about to turn things around and was dying to recruit her. Yet, before he could even act on his thoughts, Lu Hang was already opposed.

Just as he was about to speak, Lin Nannan said, "One of these is enough. I don’t want to leave the village!"

Compared to firearms, she’d much rather farm.

These weapons had completely vanished in their country—they had far more advanced and powerful arms, so they didn't impress her one bit.

As for patriotism, Lin Nannan’s heart now belonged solely to her own nation, so she couldn't relate to Zhang Shengguo's feelings at all. Thus, she refused without a second thought.

"What’s so important about farming? Don’t you know our country has been bullied for years because of these weapons? If you can turn junk into weapons this powerful, imagine what you could do with new materials! Lin Nannan, staying here is just wasting your talent. I’m sure your teachers wouldn’t want you buried like this," Zhang Shengguo argued earnestly.

Lin Nannan didn't budge and countered, "But the grain seeds in my hands are just as important. Compared to weapon-making, my master would rather see no one go hungry, with everyone having enough to eat."

This left Zhang Shengguo momentarily speechless—it was true, this matter was also crucial.

However, his eyes lit up as he thought of something and pressed, "There are plenty of people who know how to farm, but not everyone can make these. You should understand which is more important."
