Lu Hang went to the train station to pick them up. The luggage took up half the car. Thankfully, Lu Hang went alone—if two people had gone, one car wouldn’t have been enough. Good thing it wasn't a compact car.

With the help of the neighbors in the compound, it took a while to move everything upstairs.

Zhang Xiaofeng was warm and outgoing. Seeing children around, she passed out candy and praised them, quickly making friends.

"Thanks to all of you. Otherwise, A-Hang, just being a guy, wouldn’t have been able to take good care of Nan Nan!" she said gratefully.

"It’s nothing. Commander Lu got all this stuff—we just helped out. Besides, Nan Nan showed us how to forage herbs for cash. Shouldn’t we be thanking her instead?" Xiao Pei replied with a smile.

Everyone nodded in agreement, telling Zhang Xiaofeng not to thank them and assuring her they’d help whenever needed.

After chatting with them for a while, Zhang Xiaofeng went back to the house to unpack. Then she said to Lu Hang, "The people in this compound are really nice!"

Lu Hang smiled but didn’t say anything.

The neighborhood vibe was great these days. Everyone was busy, leaving early and returning late to dig for herbs. No one had the time or energy to gossip or meddle in others’ affairs.

If it had been like before, with his mother bringing so many things, people would’ve surely pointed fingers, accusing her of being insincere or saying Nan Nan was unfilial...

"Let me stew some soup first. Your dad can keep an eye on it, and then we’ll go to the hospital to see Nan Nan," Zhang Xiaofeng said decisively, unwilling to leave her daughter-in-law alone at the hospital and leaving no room for refusal.

"Mom, I missed you!" Lin Nannan reached out and hugged Zhang Xiaofeng, being clingy.

"There there, Mom’s here now!" Zhang Xiaofeng patted her back soothingly before turning to glare at Lu Hang. "You knew Nan Nan missed me, yet you didn’t let me come sooner. You got her all upset—real nice of you."

Lu Hang looked at his teary wife and then at his furious mother, feeling like some unwanted in-law who couldn’t do anything right.

Seeing Lu Hang’s helpless expression, Lin Nannan knew her emotions had unfairly affected him. But watching him speechless also amused her...

All the fuss caught the attention of the nurses keeping an eye on Lin Nannan. They watched enviously, and soon the story of how Lin Nannan was doted on by her mother-in-law while Commander Lu was scolded spread throughout the hospital, making other wives jealous.
