Chapter 342
by 夏至三候Chapter 342
The Market
With Lin Nannan by his side, Lu Hang's mood improved significantly after venting his emotions. However, the next morning, it was still evident that he wasn’t in high spirits.
"Wait for me at noon!" Lu Hang said as he left the house.
"Alright, I’ll go plant the seeds," Lin Nannan replied, separating the seeds she had brought from her hometown and those bought at the market, planning to plant whatever she could that day.
Lu Hang didn’t stop her, just reminded her not to overexert herself before heading out.
After breakfast, she cleaned up and went downstairs.
Seeing her busy in the field, bystanders gathered around, some tidying their own plots, livening up the place.
In these times, every penny counted, so what was grown in one’s own field was treated like treasure—counted repeatedly to prevent theft.
While everyone was occupied, Lin Nannan split the seeds between two plots, each with completely different varieties.
The seeds from the market were for scallions and leafy greens, grown for quick harvests.
The ones from home, however, were hardier strains of potatoes, pumpkins, and such. She had brought some with her, left some at home, and the rest had been taken to the capital by Mr. Hu.
"Nan Nan, why do your seeds look different?" a keen-eyed neighbor asked upon seeing the seeds she had laid out.
"Oh, these are from my hometown, prepared by my mother-in-law. I’m not entirely sure what they are, but if they grow, that’s all that matters!" she answered vaguely, not in the mood for detailed explanations.
If these crops succeeded, she knew she’d never hear the end of it.
Still, nothing could kill her farming spirit.
As everyone chatted, they watched as Lin Nannan planted the seeds. Later, Lu Hang came to help, and the two returned home together.
Though it was a familiar sight, Lu Hang’s actions made the military wives compare him to their own husbands, making them want to kick their husbands out.
...
By the time Lu Hang became busy again, Lin Nannan’s seeds had sprouted tender shoots.
"I don’t know when I’ll be back, but stay in the camp and don’t go anywhere, understand?" Lu Hang warned her uneasily as he left.
Lin Nannan nodded. "Don’t worry, I won’t leave until my plants are grown. Besides, this market’s nothing special, and I won’t go anywhere else. Just take care of yourself."
Seeing how serious she was, Lu Hang believed her—not knowing that once he left, Lin Nannan almost turned the whole camp upside down.
Lu Hang and a few officials knew Lin Nannan’s identity and that she was only in camp for her safety.
Political Commissar Chen was aware of this, which was why he had his wife look out for her. But Hu Zhaoxia didn’t know, nor did anyone else.
On the third day after Lu Hang’s departure, Lin Nannan had just woken up when she heard unusually noisy chatter downstairs. Curious, she opened the door to peek out.
"Lin Nannan, we’re going to another market. Want to come?" someone called from below.
"Come on, it’s much cheaper over there!"
Tempted, Lin Nannan considered it and decided to check it out.
This time, not only Hu Zhaoxia but also Xiao Pei joined the trip.
She left the baby with her mother-in-law and joined the others outside.
"Nan Nan, what are you planning to buy?" Xiao Pei stood beside Lin Nannan and asked quietly.
Lin Nannan thought for a moment and replied, "Not sure yet. I'll buy whatever I like!"
Her bold tone made Xiao Pei chuckle.
All the military wives in the residential compound knew that Lin Nannan was well-off.
This time, since there were many of them, they walked to the market. The distance wasn't too far—just an hour's walk—completely different from the last time when they took transportation.
Lin Nannan had come along this time mainly because Lu Hang wasn't around, allowing her to store more things in her space... She wanted to slowly accumulate things and then try them all at once...
As long as the items disappeared, she would believe they had safely reached her hometown.
After visiting the market twice, Lin Nannan knew that the military wives would split up upon arrival and regroup when it was time to return.
Once she arrived, the sight of lively river creatures troubled her because her space couldn't hold living creatures.
She wondered if her space would work like before if her psychic power grew stronger.
If she could store living things in her space, she would put in double the effort to gather them instead of feeling helpless.
But the only things that could enhance her psychic power were those shards.
In the end, she had tried to find more shards but failed, convincing her that such items would only become scarcer over time. Given their high value, it was extremely difficult for her to obtain more shards from Yin Xu.
She needed to find a way to boost her psychic power so she could store these live animals...
Only here could she see the real thing. Before, what she had seen were mostly simulated images, vastly different from reality.
She suddenly wondered—if she really sent living creatures over, would they recognize them at all?
The thought amused her.
But since she had no clues for now, Lin Nannan could only shake her head and dismiss those expectations...
She looked around, picking and buying what she wanted.
Money wasn't an issue for her. After she arrived, Lu Hang had given her all his money, so she didn’t have to pinch pennies like the others.
Still, she didn’t buy recklessly.
With enough food stocked at home, Lin Nannan wasn't eyeing the food. Instead, she was drawn to the neatly arranged medicinal herbs.
Unfamiliar with the local terrain and Lu Hang wouldn't let her venture out, she had no chance to forage for herbs herself. So when she saw vendors selling them, she got interested.
Spotting honeysuckle, she thought of Lu Hang’s recent stress-related fatigue and bought the entire basket.
Aside from honeysuckle, she also picked up various other herbs, keeping some visible while storing the rest in her space.
Lin Nannan went from stall to stall, purchasing herbs generously. Vendors' eyes lit up at the sight of her, eager to shove their goods into her arms.
Just then, she sensed a surge in her psychic power—fleeting but unmistakable.
She glanced around, wondering what could have triggered it.
In all her time here, she had only felt such fluctuations when encountering shards. This sudden occurrence surprised her...
"Miss, do you want to buy this?" A young boy approached, holding up a stone just as she was puzzling over it.
