Seeing an unfamiliar figure descend the stairs carrying such a large box, she instinctively frowned, sensing something was wrong. As she turned to go back inside with her things, a thought struck her. She cried out, “Oh no!” dropped what she was holding, and hurried upstairs. Finding Lu Hang’s door wide open, she called out a few times but got no response. Realizing no one was home, her suspicions grew stronger. She shouted downstairs, “Is anyone home? Come out here!”

“What’s wrong?” The people inside, hearing the commotion, came out and looked up to see Liu Amei on the second floor, asking what had happened.

“I just saw someone rushing out of Commander Lu’s place carrying a huge box. I came up to check and found the door open with no one inside. I’m afraid someone with bad intentions might have stolen something from Commander Lu’s home. Two of you stay in the courtyard and keep watch, the rest help look for Commander Lu and his wife. I’ll go after that man…” As Liu Amei spoke, the others exchanged worried looks, finding it hard to believe.

“Amei, this is a military base!” someone warned her.

“I saw it with my own eyes. If something really happens, could you forgive yourselves?” Liu Amei retorted.

After exchanging looks, no one could refuse.

They all felt indebted to Lin Nannan and had been looking for a way to repay her, but never found the chance.

If something really went wrong this time and they stood by doing nothing, they would regret it deeply. So, everyone nodded in agreement…

“Amei, we’ll go look for them. Someone should go with you, just in case you need help!”

Liu Amei, anxious and in a hurry, agreed immediately. She quickly came downstairs.

The courtyard, once peaceful, suddenly erupted into noise, but Liu Amei paid no attention. She immediately took two military wives with her toward the main gate, intending to warn the guards in case the suspect tried to escape.

Meanwhile, Lin Nannan hurried to the phone station. When she arrived, she was momentarily taken aback—she realized she hadn’t asked the soldier for the phone number. How was she supposed to call back?

The attendant at the phone noticed her frowning, as if troubled by something, and asked, “What’s wrong? Did you forget the phone number?”

Lin Nannan looked at him and asked, “Did my in-laws leave a phone number when they called earlier?”

“Your in-laws?” The attendant stood up and looked at her in surprise. “When was the call? I’ve been here all morning, and no calls came through. Are you sure you have the right time?”

“No call?” Lin Nannan was taken aback. “How can that be? Someone came to my house and said my in-laws were held up at the train station, and that I should send someone to pick them up. How could there be no call?”

“Maybe the call went to Commander Lu’s office instead. All I know is, no one called here. I’ve been on duty all morning, and only one person came to make a call. No one called looking for anyone.”

Lin Nannan shook her head. “That can’t be. Lu Hang is busy, and I don’t usually take calls at his office. The number we’ve always used is this one. If my in-laws were trying to reach me, they would definitely call here.”

“Well, I don’t know what to tell you, but there were no calls this morning!”

The attendant's certainty only confused Lin Nannan more. What was the meaning behind the soldier’s message? Why would he say that, and what was the point?

Puzzled, Lin Nannan decided to call her hometown instead, hoping to ask her parents if they had set off and get an idea of when they might arrive.

However, the phone rang for a long time with no answer, as if no one was home. This made Lin Nannan frown even more, worry growing inside her. She feared something might have happened to her in-laws…

Just then, the military wives who had been searching for her arrived, breathing heavily. They had asked around to find out Lin Nannan was here and rushed over.

“Nan Nan, your house has been robbed! The door was left wide open. You need to go back and check right away!” The woman clutched her stomach, too out of breath to speak properly, stunning Lin Nannan.

"What do you mean, my house was robbed?" Lin Nannan looked completely incredulous. This was a military camp—how could her house possibly be robbed? Besides, her daughter was still there...

"What about my daughter?" Lin Nannan's heart sank as she suddenly realized she had been tricked. "Did anyone see my daughter?"

The phone call was all a lie—someone had lured her away with the intention of targeting Lu Dudu...

As the realization hit her, she felt sick, her heart pounding with panic.

"Liu Amei sensed something was wrong. She said she saw someone leaving your house and was worried it had been robbed. She went to check and found no one home, so she told us to find you and Commander Lu immediately."

Hearing that no one was home, Lin Nannan’s heart turned cold. She couldn’t understand why something like this would happen in a military camp, but she knew it was targeted at her. Without a second thought for the two exhausted military wives who had run to find her, she took off running...

"Amei went after that person—she headed toward the main gate!" one of the military wives shouted after Lin Nannan, calling out as she caught her breath.

They had run so hard they were out of energy and could only watch helplessly as Lin Nannan rushed away.

Hearing the reminder, Lin Nannan sprinted toward the main gate, praying that Liu Amei had managed to stop the person...

She couldn’t imagine who would be so brazen as to do something like this inside a military base—were they trying to get themselves killed?

"Yes, they said his name is Zhang Yao. He got discharged today. Amei got there just a step too late—since his paperwork was in order, he was let go."

Lin Nannan’s face darkened. "Do you know which way they went?"

"Not sure, but the soldier with Amei said Zhang Yao isn’t from around here—he was returning to his hometown, so they must've headed to the train station. They went that way."
