Chapter 318
by 夏至三候Chapter 318
The Traitor
Liu Jinzhi was familiar with the area, so she led them down a small path completely opposite to the direction the others had taken, to avoid running into anyone following them.
Not long after they left, Zheng Jie arrived with his men.
Before they even got out of their vehicles, they spotted the bodies lying at the warehouse entrance and immediately sensed something was wrong. Zheng Jie didn’t even bother to park properly—he rushed out in a rage.
Ignoring the clearly dead bodies, he charged into the warehouse.
Seeing the once fully stocked ammunition now emptied and all the crates broken open, he clenched his fists and roared, “Who? Who did this?!”
This stockpile had been his key to breaking out and his foundation for the future. Now, it was all gone.
The vehicles he’d brought carried some ammunition, but compared to what had been stored in the warehouse, it was insignificant.
“Sir, we should leave quickly. If we run into whoever took the weapons, we might not stand a chance,” his right-hand man urged.
“Sir, there’s still a fraction left behind,” another reported after inspecting the area, finding a small portion that hadn’t been taken.
Zheng Jie strode over with a dark expression. Seeing that less than a tenth of the original stock remained, his rage intensified.
“No!” He suddenly realized something and snarled, “They didn’t leave these behind—they saw us coming and didn’t have time to take everything! Get after them now!”
The group split into two teams—one to track the trail, the other to salvage what weapons remained—without delay.
Those Zheng Jie had brought with him were his most loyal and capable men. It didn’t take long before they discovered signs of Lin Nannan’s group’s escape route.
“After them!” Zheng Jie, blinded by rage, didn’t stop to wonder how such a small group could have carried away so much. All he could think of was ripping them to pieces once he caught them.
Stealing those weapons was like signing his death warrant. Whoever it was, he wouldn’t let them escape.
Liu Jinzhi had led them down a back path, making it impossible for vehicles to follow. So Zheng Jie’s men gave chase on foot, carrying their weapons…
As they moved, one of Zheng Jie’s subordinates muttered, puzzled, “This place is out-of-the-way and guarded. No one should’ve known about it—even people from Nanshi might not be aware. How did they find it?”
Ordinary people wouldn’t have stumbled upon this place, let alone at such a perfect time… It was as if some invisible hand was pulling strings, always one step ahead.
This thought wasn’t just on the subordinate’s mind—Zheng Jie was thinking the same.
“Did someone betray the Zheng family?” The words cut through the night of their hurried march, sharp and unsettling. No one knew who had spoken them, but they struck a chord with everyone. The entire group halted in their tracks…
In the darkness, Zheng Jie exploded, “Who was it?!”
No one dared to answer. Dead silence fell.
“No one’s missing from our side…” The reply only made the silence heavier.
“Who said that? Liu Jinzhi isn’t here, is she?” A woman’s voice, tinged with displeasure, spoke up. No one turned to look at the speaker, but a chill ran through them all.
Liu Jinzhi—once Zheng Jie’s favorite. Many of them had endured her temper. When they learned she’d been captured, they’d quietly celebrated, relieved that no one would torment them anymore.
Because Zheng Jie had been furious at Liu Jinzhi for her reckless actions, which had implicated him, he’d forbidden anyone from mentioning her. That was why Xiao Bao had suffered, and eventually, even Xiao Bao had disappeared.
Having spent so long by Zheng Jie’s side, Liu Jinzhi understood him better than anyone else. So if someone had tipped off their enemies, it made sense that it was her.
